Exploitation Conditions

The victim must run composer install, composer update, or composer require while installing or updating a package that contains a bin entry with .. path traversal segments in its composer.json. No special Composer configuration is required - default Composer usage is sufficient. The attacker must control or compromise a Composer package that the victim installs; this is the primary limiting factor, as it requires either publishing a new malicious package the victim adds as a dependency, or compromising an existing package in the victim's dependency tree. The effective scope of the chmod is bounded by the OS permissions of the user running Composer: if run as a non-root user, only files owned by or world-accessible to that user can be affected; if run as root (common in some CI/CD pipelines), any file on the system is a potential target. Versions 2.2.29 and 2.10.2 and later are not affected.

Impact

The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, score 6.1) accurately captures the threat model: local execution, low complexity, user interaction required (running Composer), high confidentiality impact. The PR:N metric reflects that the attacker is a malicious package author who needs no privileges on the victim's system - only the ability to publish or compromise a Composer package the victim installs. The real-world risk is concentrated in two scenarios: developer workstations (where sensitive files like SSH keys, .env files, or config files could be made world-readable) and CI/CD pipelines running as privileged users, where the impact of a permissive chmod is far broader. No EPSS data is provided, no CISA KEV listing exists, and no public POC is identified at time of analysis, suggesting exploitation has not been observed at scale. However, the attack is straightforward conceptually - a motivated threat actor with a published package can exploit this deterministically whenever a victim installs. The absence of KEV should not be interpreted as low-priority for teams consuming third-party Composer packages in automated pipelines.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A threat actor publishes a Composer package (or compromises an existing popular package) and includes a bin entry such as ../../../../../../home/ci/.ssh/id_rsa in its composer.json. When a developer or CI/CD pipeline runs composer require malicious/package or composer update, Composer resolves the traversal path and executes chmod on the SSH private key, making it world-readable to all users on the system. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack is mechanistically straightforward given the description.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 08, 2026

Path traversal in Composer's binary installation flow allows a malicious PHP package to cause arbitrary host files to be chmod'd world-readable and world-executable. Any user running composer install, composer update, or composer require against a package whose bin entry contains .. path segments is vulnerable - Composer follows the traversal and applies chmod outside the intended package install directory. This is a supply chain attack vector affecting Composer prior to 2.2.29 and 2.10.2; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing is identified at time of analysis, but the impact to developer and CI/CD environments is significant given the confidentiality risk of exposing sensitive host files.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Composer 2.2.29 (LTS branch) or 2.10.2 (current branch) immediately - both releases are available at https://github.com/composer/composer/releases/tag/2.2.29 and https://github.com/composer/composer/releases/tag/2.10.2 respectively. The fixes are confirmed via commits https://github.com/composer/composer/commit/502c6c4f699802d9cf464728b3e8a95674f919a0 and https://github.com/composer/composer/commit/c50b1efd13ebd73f6dca19b31424c5a02bf93cc1. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, a practical compensating control is to audit all third-party packages being installed for suspicious bin entries containing .. path components before running Composer; this can be done by inspecting vendor/<package>/composer.json files or using composer show --format=json and reviewing bin fields. Running Composer as a minimally privileged user limits the set of files that can be affected by the traversal chmod - avoid running composer install as root or with elevated CI/CD privileges until patched. Note that auditing bin entries manually is not scalable and is prone to error; patching is the authoritative fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Composer (cpe:2.3:a:composer:composer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is the canonical PHP dependency manager. During package installation, Composer processes bin entries declared in a package's composer.json to install CLI binaries into the project's vendor/bin directory. The vulnerability (CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) arises because Composer does not sanitize or canonicalize bin paths before resolving them, allowing sequences like ../../etc/cron.d/target to escape the package install root. Once resolved, Composer applies a chmod call - granting world-readable and world-executable permissions - to whatever file path results from the traversal, regardless of whether it is inside the package directory. The flaw is triggered by the standard install/update/require workflows and requires no special Composer configuration.

DescriptionCVE.org

Composer is a dependency Manager for the PHP language. Prior to 2.2.29 and 2.10.2, a Composer package bin entry containing .. path segments can resolve outside the package install directory and cause Composer's binary installation flow to chmod an existing host file to a world-readable and world-executable mode during composer install, update, or require. This issue is fixed in versions 2.2.29 and 2.10.2.
