DescriptionCVE.org

A vulnerability in the DMG file format parser of ClamAV could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a DoS condition, or possibly other expanded impacts, resulting from memory corruption on an affected device.

This vulnerability is due to improper boundary checks for content in DMG files during scanning, which may result in an integer overflow on 32-bit platforms only. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting a crafted file that contains DMG content to be scanned by ClamAV on an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the ClamAV scanning process to terminate, resulting in a DoS condition on the affected software.

AnalysisAI

Denial of service in ClamAV's DMG file format parser allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to crash the scanning engine by submitting a crafted Apple Disk Image (DMG) for inspection. The flaw stems from an integer overflow triggered during boundary checks on DMG content and manifests only on 32-bit builds of ClamAV; memory corruption raises the theoretical possibility of expanded impact beyond a crash, though only DoS is described. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the target run a 32-bit build of ClamAV - the integer overflow does not trigger on 64-bit platforms - and that the DMG file format handler be active during scanning (DMG scanning enabled, which is default in archive scanning). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.5 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H - network reachable, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction, and availability-only impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker emails or uploads a crafted DMG file to a service that automatically scans attachments/uploads with a 32-bit ClamAV instance (e.g., a mail gateway or file-upload portal). When ClamAV parses the malformed DMG, the integer overflow corrupts memory and terminates the scanning process, disrupting scanning for all inbound files. …
Remediation Upgrade to a fixed ClamAV release as identified in the Cisco/Talos advisory (https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-clamav-88cFYyxR); an exact patched version was not included in the provided data, so confirm the fixed build from that advisory before deploying - no vendor-released patch version is independently confirmed here. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
