  • 28 npm packages depend on undici (16 direct, 23 indirect)

Ecosystem-wide dependent count for version 7.0.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

Impact: The undici WebSocket client enforces maxPayloadSize on the cumulative byte count of fragments in a message but does not enforce a limit on the number of fragments. A malicious WebSocket server can stream many small or empty continuation frames that each pass per-frame and cumulative-size validation, collectively causing unbounded memory growth in the client process. The result is memory exhaustion and a denial of service.

Affected applications are those using the undici WebSocket client (new WebSocket(...)) or the WebSocketStream API that can be induced to connect to an attacker-controlled or compromised WebSocket endpoint.

All releases starting at undici 6.17.0 are affected.

Patches: Upgrade to undici >= 6.26.0, >= 7.28.0, or >= 8.5.0. Workarounds: No workaround is available. The fix must be applied through an upgrade.

AnalysisAI

Memory exhaustion denial of service in the undici WebSocket client (versions 6.17.0 and later) allows a malicious or compromised WebSocket server to crash Node.js client processes by streaming an unbounded number of small or empty continuation frames. Because undici only caps cumulative payload bytes via maxPayloadSize and does not limit fragment count, attackers can drive unbounded memory growth without ever exceeding the configured size threshold. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV.

Technical ContextAI

undici is the high-performance HTTP/1.1 and WebSocket client built into Node.js core and used widely via the standalone npm package (cpe:2.3:a:undici:undici). Its WebSocket implementation (new WebSocket(...) and the WebSocketStream API) is responsible for reassembling RFC 6455 fragmented messages, where a single logical message can be split across many continuation frames terminated by a FIN bit. The defect is a classic CWE-400 Uncontrolled Resource Consumption: the reassembly buffer enforces a per-message byte ceiling (maxPayloadSize) but tracks no fragment-count ceiling, so adversary-controlled framing - including zero-length continuations - incrementally allocates buffer and bookkeeping state that the cumulative-size check never trips.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade undici to 6.26.0, 7.28.0, or 8.5.0 or later on the corresponding release line, as documented in the upstream GHSA-vxpw-j846-p89q advisory (https://github.com/nodejs/undici/security/advisories/GHSA-vxpw-j846-p89q) and the OpenJS CNA index (https://cna.openjsf.org/security-advisories.html); for Node.js runtimes that ship undici internally, take the Node.js release that bundles a fixed undici version. The vendor explicitly states no workaround is available, so compensating controls must operate outside the library: restrict outbound WebSocket connections to an allow-list of trusted origins, refuse user-supplied ws:// or wss:// URLs at the application layer, and apply per-process memory limits (e.g., container cgroup memory caps or Node --max-old-space-size) so an exhausted worker crashes and restarts rather than starving the host - accepting that these only contain blast radius and do not prevent the DoS itself.
