MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The initial injection step requires only network access to the CyberPanel web interface - no authentication, no special configuration, and no prior account on the system. The CVSS 4.0 vector confirms PR:N (no privileges required). The triggering condition for JavaScript execution and subsequent RCE requires a CyberPanel administrator to visit the AI Scanner dashboard after the payload is stored; without this passive admin interaction (CVSS 4.0 UI:P), the injected code does not execute. The cron job planting step requires that CyberPanel's cron management API remains accessible via same-origin authenticated requests from the admin browser session - a default condition in standard CyberPanel deployments. Exploitation is bounded by: (1) the admin must visit the specific AI Scanner dashboard page, not just any admin page; (2) the CyberPanel instance must be running a version prior to 2.4.4; (3) the AI Scanner feature must be present. Versions 2.4.4 and later enforce authentication on the callback endpoint, blocking the injection step entirely. |
| Impact | The official CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 underrepresents practical risk because the scoring model separates vulnerable-system impact (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N) from subsequent-system impact (SC:H/SI:H), but operationally the end result is unauthenticated-to-OS-RCE gated only by passive admin interaction. SSVC rates Automatable: no, consistent with EPSS at 0.67% (71st percentile) - mass-scanning exploitation is constrained by the required admin dashboard visit, preventing bulk automated compromise. However, SSVC's Technical Impact rating of 'partial' is misleading: successful exploitation achieves full OS command execution via cron implantation, which is total impact in practice. A confirmed public POC at itsrez.re significantly lowers attacker skill requirements. The vulnerability is not in CISA KEV, so active in-the-wild exploitation is not formally confirmed; however, CyberPanel has a documented history of prior critical vulnerabilities being rapidly weaponized (e.g., CVE-2024-51567). Defenders should treat this as a high-priority patch given the public POC, the unauthenticated injection step, and the RCE chain outcome - the CVSS 4.0 score alone is an insufficient triage signal here. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends an unauthenticated HTTP POST to /api/ai-scanner/callback on an internet-exposed CyberPanel instance, supplying a findings_json value containing a JavaScript payload that exfiltrates the admin's session token and issues a same-origin API call to create a cron job executing a reverse shell. When a CyberPanel administrator next opens the AI Scanner dashboard - a routine operational task - the stored script fires silently in their browser, the cron job is planted, and the attacker receives an OS-level shell on the server within minutes. A full proof-of-concept demonstrating this chain is publicly available at https://itsrez.re/post/cyberpanel-rce. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Jul 24, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in CyberPanel's AI Scanner dashboard chains to unauthenticated remote code execution on versions prior to 2.4.4, exploitable by any network-reachable attacker without credentials. The POST /api/ai-scanner/callback endpoint lacks authentication, permitting arbitrary JavaScript injection into the findings_json field of ScanHistory records; when an administrator visits the AI Scanner dashboard, the script executes in their privileged browser session and issues same-origin API calls to plant OS-level cron jobs. A public proof-of-concept exploit is confirmed; no CISA KEV active exploitation listing is present at time of analysis, though the low skill requirement due to POC availability elevates real-world risk significantly.
RemediationAI
Upgrade CyberPanel to version 2.4.4 or later, which incorporates the upstream fix at https://github.com/usmannasir/cyberpanel/commit/0a099b1b193946555fbdd387a28486b1521f9961; note that version 2.4.4 is sourced from EUVD data and has not been independently verified against a tagged GitHub release - confirm via the official CyberPanel release channel. If immediate patching is not possible, block external and untrusted-network access to the /api/ai-scanner/callback endpoint via reverse proxy or firewall ACL; this prevents new payload injection but does not neutralize payloads already stored in ScanHistory records. To address stored payloads pending patching, purge the ScanHistory table via the CyberPanel database - trade-off is loss of historical scan data. Additionally, restrict CyberPanel admin dashboard access to known-trusted IP ranges, reducing the surface for XSS delivery to administrator browsers. Do not rely on Content Security Policy alone as a compensating control, as CyberPanel's CSP configuration would need independent verification.

CyberPanel (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:usmannasir:cyberpanel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a Python/Django-based web hosting control panel used by VPS and shared-hosting providers. The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation - Stored XSS): the AI Scanner callback endpoint accepts and persists attacker-controlled JSON without input sanitization or output encoding, and without enforcing any authentication check. Stored payloads survive in the ScanHistory database table until an administrator renders the AI Scanner dashboard, at which point the browser executes the injected JavaScript within the admin's authenticated origin context. The attack then pivots through CyberPanel's own cron management API - accessible same-origin - to write attacker-supplied commands to the system crontab, bridging a web-layer flaw into OS-level execution. The patch commit 0a099b1b193946555fbdd387a28486b1521f9961 modifies plogical/acl.py to return an access-denied response (return 0) for unauthenticated callers on the callback endpoint, enforcing the missing authentication gate.

4DescriptionCVE.org
CyberPanel versions prior to 2.4.4 contain a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the AI Scanner dashboard where the POST /api/ai-scanner/callback endpoint lacks authentication and allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious JavaScript by overwriting the findings_json field of ScanHistory records. Attackers can inject JavaScript that executes in an administrator's authenticated session when they visit the AI Scanner dashboard, allowing them to issue same-origin requests to plant cron jobs and achieve remote code execution on the server.

Cross-Site Scripting occurs when an application accepts untrusted data and sends it to a web browser without proper validation or encoding.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
