Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Jul 27, 2026
Two-factor authentication bypass in OpenProject before 17.3.0 allows attackers with a known password to brute-force the TOTP code, gaining full account access. No rate limiting or lockout mechanism exists for the 2FA verification endpoint, making it possible to cycle through the 6‑digit code in roughly 11 hours under default settings. The flaw also affects backup code verification, completely negating 2FA protection; publicly available exploit code exists based on SSVC intelligence, though EPSS indicates a low exploitation probability.

3DescriptionCVE.org
OpenProject is an open-source project management application. In versions prior to 17.3.0, 2FA OTP verification in the confirm_otp action of the two_factor_authentication module has no rate limiting, lockout mechanism, or failed-attempt tracking. The existing brute_force_block_after_failed_logins setting only counts password login failures and does not apply to the 2FA verification stage, and neither the fail_login nor stage_failure methods increment any counter, lock the account, or add any delay. With the default TOTP drift window of ±60 seconds allowing approximately 5 valid codes at any time, an attacker who knows a user's password can brute-force the 6-digit TOTP code at roughly 5-10 attempts per second with an expected completion time of approximately 11 hours. The same vulnerability applies to backup code verification. This effectively allows complete 2FA bypass for any account where the password is known. This issue has been fixed in version 17.3.0.
Executive ViewAI
OpenProject versions prior to 17.3.0 contain a two-factor authentication bypass vulnerability that allows attackers with a known password to brute-force the TOTP code, gaining full account access. This affects all users relying on 2FA for account security, potentially leading to unauthorized access to sensitive project data and administrative capabilities. Leadership should prioritize patching to maintain security posture.
Within 24 hours, upgrade all OpenProject instances to version 17.3.0 or later, which fixes the missing rate limiting on the 2FA verification endpoint. Over the next 7 days, verify that all users have updated and document the upgrade completion. Within 30 days, review and consider implementing additional rate limiting or lockout mechanisms for the 2FA endpoint as a defense-in-depth measure.
Apply vendor patch.
