Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires Undertow to be deployed behind an upstream HTTP proxy, load balancer, or CDN that parses header names differently from Undertow - a standalone Undertow with clients connecting directly is not exploitable for smuggling because there is no parsing-discrepancy partner. The attacker needs network reach to the fronting proxy over HTTP/1.1 with connection reuse enabled between proxy and Undertow; HTTP/2-only paths or proxy-to-origin connections that disable keep-alive break the primitive. No authentication or user interaction is required (PR:N/UI:N), and the attack works against default Undertow configurations in the affected JBoss EAP, Data Grid, Fuse, and Camel products as long as a tolerant-vs-strict proxy pair fronts them.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N rates the issue 9.1 Critical, reflecting remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity exploitation with high confidentiality and integrity impact but no availability impact - consistent with request smuggling that leaks or hijacks proxied requests rather than crashing the server. Counter-signals temper urgency: EPSS is only 0.10% (26th percentile), SSVC marks exploitation as 'none' and automatable 'no', and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so this is not yet a mass-scan target. However, SSVC technical impact is 'total' and request-smuggling primitives historically enable auth bypass against reverse-proxy architectures, so any Undertow instance sitting behind a proxy (HAProxy, nginx, F5, CDN) that enforces security policy should be treated as priority-patch even though scanners are not yet weaponizing it.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends a single crafted HTTP/1.1 request to a CDN or reverse proxy fronting a JBoss EAP application; the proxy parses header names normally and forwards the request, but Undertow's lenient parser splits the body into a second smuggled request that targets an internal admin endpoint, bypassing the proxy's authentication check. The smuggled request executes in the context of the next legitimate user's connection, allowing the attacker to access unauthorized resources or poison cached responses. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but request smuggling against Undertow is a well-documented research area with reusable Burp Suite tooling.

AnalysisAIv3 – Jun 10, 2026

HTTP request smuggling in Red Hat Undertow allows remote unauthenticated attackers to bypass front-end security controls by exploiting parsing discrepancies between Undertow and upstream proxies when handling crafted header names. The flaw (CWE-444) affects Undertow embedded in multiple Red Hat products including JBoss EAP 7/8, Data Grid 8, Fuse 7, and Apache Camel for Spring Boot 4, with Red Hat issuing patches via RHSA-2026:25125 and RHSA-2026:25126. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and EPSS is low (0.10%), but CVSS 9.1 and SSVC 'total' technical impact warrant prompt patching of internet-facing deployments.

HTTP request smuggling in Undertow allows remote unauthenticated attackers to craft requests whose header names are parsed differently by Undertow than by upstream proxies, enabling smuggled requests that bypass front-end security controls and reach restricted resources. The flaw affects Undertow as embedded in numerous Red Hat products including JBoss EAP 7/8, Data Grid 8, and Camel for Spring Boot 4. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and EPSS is low (0.10%), but CISA SSVC rates technical impact as total.

v1 Mar 27, 2026 - 16:45 CVSS 8.7

Undertow header parsing discrepancies enable HTTP request smuggling attacks against Red Hat middleware and enterprise platforms, allowing remote unauthenticated attackers to bypass security controls and access unauthorized resources. The vulnerability affects multiple Red Hat products including JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7 and 8, Data Grid 8, Fuse 7, Single Sign-On 7, and Enterprise Linux 8, 9, and 10 distributions. With a CVSS score of 8.7 and changed scope (S:C), attackers can exploit inconsistent header interpretation between Undertow and upstream proxies to smuggle malicious requests past authentication and authorization mechanisms, achieving high confidentiality and integrity impact without requiring authentication.

RemediationAI

Apply Patch available per vendor advisory by installing the Red Hat errata RHSA-2026:25125 (https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:25125) and RHSA-2026:25126 (https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:25126), which update the Undertow packages shipped in the affected RHEL, JBoss EAP, Data Grid, Fuse, and Camel products; cross-reference https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-28368 for the per-product fixed component versions. Where immediate patching is not possible, configure the fronting proxy to strictly validate and normalize HTTP header names (reject non-token characters, reject ambiguous Content-Length/Transfer-Encoding combinations) and terminate any connection that contains malformed headers - note this can break legitimate clients that send non-RFC-compliant headers. Disabling HTTP/1.1 connection reuse (keep-alive) between the proxy and Undertow also eliminates the smuggling primitive at the cost of significant throughput loss, and is only acceptable as a short-term mitigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Undertow is the high-performance non-blocking HTTP server used as the embedded web layer in JBoss EAP/Wildfly and many Red Hat middleware products. CWE-444 (Inconsistent Interpretation of HTTP Requests, a.k.a. HTTP Request Smuggling) arises when two HTTP processors in a chain - typically a fronting proxy/load balancer and the origin server - disagree on where one request ends and the next begins. In this case Undertow's header-name parser tolerates or normalizes characters differently than upstream proxies, so an attacker can craft a single TCP message that the proxy treats as one request but Undertow splits into two, smuggling the trailing request past proxy-level auth, WAF, or routing rules.

DescriptionNVD

A flaw was found in Undertow. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to construct specially crafted requests where header names are parsed differently by Undertow compared to upstream proxies. This discrepancy in header interpretation can be exploited to launch request smuggling attacks, potentially bypassing security controls and accessing unauthorized resources.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical vulnerability in Red Hat Undertow (CVSS 9.1) allows attackers to bypass security controls on applications using JBoss EAP, Data Grid, Fuse, and Camel for Spring Boot, potentially compromising data protection on internet-facing systems. The attack requires no user authentication, making exposed deployments immediately at risk to unauthorized access and policy circumvention. Urgent action needed to identify affected systems and implement interim protections pending vendor patches.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Implement WAF rules to detect and block HTTP header smuggling patterns (malformed, duplicate, or crafted headers); (2) Configure upstream proxy header normalization and strict validation; (3) Enable HTTP request anomaly detection and logging; (4) Monitor application logs for authorization/authentication bypass attempts; (5) Implement network segmentation isolating internet-facing systems from backend infrastructure; (6) Enable security alerting on suspicious request patterns or policy violations.
