| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Chamilo LMS administrator account (PR:H confirmed by CVSS and explicitly stated in the GHSA advisory: 'Administrator credentials are required to exploit the issue'). The exact trigger is a request to /main/inc/ajax/model.ajax.php with a=get_sessions, _search=true, and a filters JSON object whose groupOp field contains SQL syntax instead of AND/OR; the endpoint and action are standard application functionality, so no non-default configuration is needed. The principal limiting factor is the administrator privilege requirement - there is no unauthenticated or low-privilege path in the available data; no special platform or version condition applies beyond running an affected release (<=2.0.0, i.e. prior to 1.11.40 on the 1.x branch or prior to 2.0.1 on the 2.x branch). |
| Impact | This is a real but gated issue, not an internet-facing emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 7.2 High) is network-reachable with low complexity and no user interaction, but PR:H is the decisive limiter: the GHSA advisory and NVD both confirm that valid administrator credentials are required, so the attacker must already hold the highest application privilege. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (priority, not act_now/emergency), which is consistent with a privileged post-authentication flaw. No EPSS score and no KEV listing are present in the input, so there is no signal of widespread or active exploitation - treat exploitation likelihood as unquantified rather than low. The GHSA advisory confirms the flaw was verified with a time-based blind payload (≈5s delay), but no working exploit code or SSVC decision tree (automatable/technical-impact fields) is supplied, so automatability cannot be assessed. Net: a legitimately High-severity SQL injection whose real-world risk is bounded by the administrator-credential prerequisite - prioritize patching this cycle rather than as an out-of-band emergency, and note that an admin who abuses it is largely escalating within privileges they already partly possess (though SQLi can still reach data and DB-level actions beyond the app's normal admin scope). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained or been granted Chamilo administrator credentials (e.g. a malicious insider, a compromised admin account, or a lower-trust admin exceeding intended scope) sends an authenticated AJAX request to /main/inc/ajax/model.ajax.php with a=get_sessions and _search=true, embedding SQL syntax in the groupOp field of the JSON filters parameter. Because groupOp is not validated against AND/OR before being used in query logic, the database executes the injected expression, enabling blind/time-based extraction of user, session, configuration, and password-reset data or record modification subject to DB privileges. The advisory confirms the flaw via a measurable ~5-second time delay, but no public working exploit code is provided in the input. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Blind, time-based SQL injection in Chamilo LMS lets an authenticated administrator execute arbitrary SQL through the filters[groupOp] field of the get_sessions action in /main/inc/ajax/model.ajax.php, potentially exposing user, course, session, configuration, password-reset and administrative data, altering or deleting records within the database account's privileges, and causing denial of service via deliberately expensive delayed queries. All releases up to and including 2.0.0 are affected - the 1.x branch before 1.11.40 and the 2.x branch before 2.0.1. Exploitation requires a valid administrator session (CVSS PR:H), which is the principal limiting factor; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is rated a this-week priority rather than an internet-facing emergency.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Chamilo LMS 1.11.40 (1.x branch) or 2.0.1 (2.x branch), per the release tags https://github.com/chamilo/chamilo-lms/releases/tag/v1.11.40 and https://github.com/chamilo/chamilo-lms/releases/tag/v2.0.1; the code changes are in commits 4472f3089bbbca1b4713bfd7059907676b80d07f and 7cc961d60ac27eaccd6bcc8db201de2c65adfdf3, which constrain filters->groupOp to AND/OR. Because the flaw requires administrator credentials, the practical exposure reduction is to audit and tightly limit administrator accounts and to expire or rotate administrator sessions and credentials that may have been shared or compromised, acknowledging that this narrows the attack surface but does not remediate the injection itself. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the only meaningful interim measure supported by the evidence is restricting access to the administrative backend and the /main/inc/ajax/model.ajax.php endpoint at the network or reverse-proxy layer to trusted addresses, accepting that this breaks remote administration workflows for legitimate staff and provides no protection against an already-compromised administrator account. Note that the denial-of-service vector (repeated expensive delayed queries) remains available to any administrator until the patched version is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Chamilo LMS is a PHP learning-management system whose AJAX model layer (/main/inc/ajax/model.ajax.php) implements jqGrid-style server-side grid filtering: the client submits a JSON filters object containing field/operator/value triples plus a groupOp value that is meant to be the boolean connective (AND or OR) joining the generated predicates. The getWhereClause helper builds SQL WHERE fragments from those values, and prior to the fix the groupOp string was used without verifying it against the expected operator set. The upstream commit 4472f3089bbbca1b4713bfd7059907676b80d07f addresses this by upper-casing groupOp and forcing it into an explicit allowlist of ['AND','OR'], defaulting to AND for anything else. The root cause is CWE-89 (SQL injection) arising from an input-validation gap also tracked as CWE-20, since attacker-supplied syntax reaches the query builder instead of being rejected. The advisory confirms the flaw with a time-based payload that induces roughly a five-second database delay, demonstrating that injected SQL is executed by the backend database rather than merely reflected.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Chamilo LMS is an open-source learning management system. Prior to 1.11.40 and 2.0.1, an authenticated administrator can call the get_sessions action in /main/inc/ajax/model.ajax.php with _search=true and a crafted JSON filters parameter whose groupOp field contains SQL syntax. Because groupOp is not restricted to the expected AND or OR operators before it is incorporated into query logic, attacker-controlled input is interpreted by the database and enables blind or time-based SQL injection. Successful exploitation can disclose sensitive user, course, session, configuration, password-reset, and administrative data, modify or delete records subject to database privileges, and cause denial of service through expensive delayed queries. This issue is fixed in versions 1.11.40 and 2.0.1.

Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-45146 is a high-severity SQL injection vulnerability in Chamilo LMS, an open-source learning management system. If exploited by an authenticated administrator, it could allow unauthorized access to sensitive user, course, and configuration data, potentially leading to data breaches or service disruption. Given the privileged access required and the lack of a public exploit, the immediate risk is moderate, but leadership should prioritize remediation to protect institutional data and maintain trust.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include restricting administrator access to trusted networks, monitoring database activity for anomalies, and deploying WAF rules to filter malicious SQL injection attempts.
