MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated NetBox account (version 2.9.0 up to but not including 4.7.4) that holds a bulk add-component permission such as dcim.add_interface or dcim.add_modulebay but lacks view permission over the targeted parent devices/VMs. The attacker reaches BulkComponentCreateView and submits arbitrary device/VM primary keys in the 'pk' list, or '_all' combined with a GET filter, to act on parents outside their ObjectPermission scope. Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible without a valid account and the add-component permission, and it only matters where NetBox uses constrained ObjectPermissions to scope visibility (multi-tenant/role-separated deployments); it does not grant remote unauthenticated access and availability is unaffected. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, authenticated access-control flaw rather than a top-priority emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) scores 5.3 (Medium): network-reachable and low-complexity with no user interaction, but PR:L means the attacker must already hold a valid NetBox account carrying add-component permission. Impact is limited - VC:L/VI:L/VA:N - i.e. disclosure of out-of-scope device/VM details and unauthorized component creation, not full system compromise. No CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score are present in the input, so exploitation-probability signals are absent rather than low; treat 'not scored' as missing data, not reassurance. No working public exploit was supplied - the references are the issue, the patch PR/commit, and a release tag, plus a regression test that demonstrates the fixed behavior. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a real but non-urgent internal authorization bug: prioritize patching within the month, especially in multi-tenant NetBox deployments relying on ObjectPermission scoping, but this is not an act_now/emergency item on the evidence provided. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated NetBox user who has been granted a bulk add-component permission (e.g. dcim.add_interface) but only scoped view access to some devices posts to the BulkComponentCreateView supplying device/VM primary keys outside their permission scope, or '_all' together with a filter. NetBox discloses those out-of-scope parent objects and creates the requested components on them, bypassing the intended view-permission constraint. No public exploit code exists; PR #23468 includes a regression test illustrating the pre-patch behavior. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Authorization bypass in NetBox (2.9.0 up to but not including 4.7.4) lets authenticated users who hold a bulk add-component permission such as dcim.add_interface or dcim.add_modulebay act on parent devices and virtual machines that their ObjectPermission constraints should hide from them. By submitting arbitrary primary keys in the 'pk' list, or '_all' together with a GET filter, the attacker can view out-of-scope device details and create components on those parents; the flaw is in BulkComponentCreateView, which failed to apply the 'view' permission restriction to the parent queryset. Impact is limited to confidentiality and integrity at low severity (CVSS 5.3 / assessed CVSS:3.1 5.3, PR:L, no availability impact), it requires a valid account and the add-component permission, and it matters chiefly in multi-tenant or role-separated deployments using constrained ObjectPermissions; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, with a vendor fix released in 4.7.4.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade NetBox to 4.7.4, the first fixed release (https://github.com/netbox-community/netbox/releases/tag/v4.7.4), which incorporates the fix from pull request https://github.com/netbox-community/netbox/pull/23468 (commit 350ac040cc91359bc0c52066f5df1bc9eba98196). Updating is the complete fix, because the upstream change now restricts the parent queryset with .restrict(request.user, 'view') before resolving 'pk' lists and '_all' filter selections, rewrites the submitted pk list to only the parents the user may view, and applies restrict_form_fields to the bulk form. Until the upgrade can be completed, the exposure is limited to accounts that hold a bulk add-component permission (for example dcim.add_interface or dcim.add_modulebay) without corresponding view permission on parent devices or VMs, so an interim compensating control is to narrow those add-component permissions, or the ObjectPermission constraints behind them, to users and roles that are also allowed to see the affected devices and virtual machines; the trade-off is that legitimate bulk component creation by narrowly scoped operators stops working until the upgrade is applied. Deployments that do not use constrained ObjectPermissions to separate visibility are far less exposed, since the bypass depends on such scoping being in place.

Technical ContextAI · show details
NetBox is a Django-based IPAM/DCIM application that enforces object-level access control through its ObjectPermission framework; querysets are scoped with the .restrict(request.user, action) method, which applies the constraints (for example a site__slug constraint) attached to a user's permissions. The affected code lives in the generic bulk views module (netbox/netbox/views/generic/bulk_views.py), specifically BulkComponentCreateView, the view behind bulk add-component operations such as adding interfaces to devices or module bays to devices. The root cause is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization): when handling a POST, the view built the parent object queryset from unfiltered self.parent_model.objects.only('pk') and self.parent_model.objects.filter(pk__in=pk_list) rather than from a queryset restricted by the 'view' permission on the parent model, and it also passed the raw request.POST into the form instead of the validated set of permitted parents. As a result, a user holding only an add-component permission could reference parent devices/VMs outside their visibility scope, both leaking limited parent details and creating child components on them. The upstream fix restricts the parent queryset with .restrict(request.user, 'view') before filtering and before resolving pks (including the '_all' path), rewrites the form's 'pk' field to only the selected permitted objects, and calls restrict_form_fields for the user; the accompanying regression test confirms that a device outside a site-scoped view permission is dropped from the selection table, from the filtered '_all' result, and from the created components.

DescriptionCVE.org
NetBox from 2.9.0 before 4.7.4 contains a broken access control vulnerability in BulkComponentCreateView that allows authenticated users to bypass view permissions on parent devices and virtual machines. Attackers with add-component permission can submit arbitrary device or VM IDs, or _all with filters, to view out-of-scope device details and create components on them.
