MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim application or user to parse an attacker-supplied DWG file in the R13-R2000 format range using LibreDWG prior to 0.14, with the crafted file carrying a manipulated num_classes field that drives the class-decoding loop in decode_R13_R2000. The limiting factors are significant: the CVSS vector shows AV:L and UI:R, so there is no remote network-triggered path on its own - the attacker must get the malicious file in front of a parser, and some user or automated process must actually process it. Impact is confined to availability (C:N/I:N/A:H), i.e. a slow-allocation hang or resource exhaustion of the parsing process, not code execution. The vendor states that running LibreDWG sandboxed with ulimit'ed memory is only a workaround, not a remediation; upgrading to 0.14 is the fix. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but limited-priority issue - a moderate-severity, availability-only denial of service, not a high-impact or actively exploited flaw. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.5) is internally consistent with the description: the attack is local and requires the victim to parse a crafted file (UI:R), with no confidentiality or integrity impact and only availability affected via algorithmic resource exhaustion. No EPSS score was provided, so statistical exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV, and no SSVC decision block was supplied; the only priority signal is the vuln.today 'this_month' label, which is consistent with a real-but-non-emergency DoS. No verified working exploit code is referenced - the available links are the vendor advisory, the tracking issue, the fix commit, and the release, and the issue itself frames the defect as something surfaced by fuzzing. The practical ceiling on risk is that the impact is a crash/hang of the parsing process (A:H), not code execution, so the realistic consequence is disruption of any service or workflow that ingests untrusted DWG files, rather than compromise. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts an R13-R2000 DWG file with a manipulated num_classes value and delivers it to a victim who opens or processes it with an application built on LibreDWG prior to 0.14 (for example a CAD viewer, converter, or automated ingestion pipeline). When decode_R13_R2000 parses the file, the unbounded per-iteration realloc loop forces an extremely slow allocation sequence, hanging or exhausting resources on the parsing host. No verified working exploit code is published; the defect was characterized as a fuzzing-reachable DoS. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Denial of service in LibreDWG versions before 0.14: a crafted R13-R2000 DWG file with a manipulated num_classes field drives the class-decoding loop in decode_R13_R2000 into an extremely slow realloc-per-iteration cycle, hanging or exhausting the memory of the process that parses it. The issue is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H) with a local attack vector and required user interaction, so an attacker must deliver the file to a victim application or user that actually parses it with the affected library. No public exploit code or active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor-released fix is version 0.14.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade LibreDWG to version 0.14, the release in which decode_R13_R2000 now rejects excessive class counts; the release is at https://github.com/LibreDWG/libredwg/releases/tag/0.14 and the underlying change is commit https://github.com/LibreDWG/libredwg/commit/9de893a2e395ff5ac104a46cca54c5e2cf8f02cf. The vendor explicitly describes running LibreDWG in a sandbox with ulimit'ed memory as a workaround rather than a remediation, so it should only be used as a stopgap where upgrading is not yet possible; the trade-off is that the memory ceiling can also abort or fail legitimate parsing of very large or complex DWG files, and it does not remove the slow realloc loop itself. Technical ContextAI · show details
LibreDWG is a free C library that reads and writes DWG files, the native format of AutoCAD and other CAD tools; the r13-r2000 decoder lives in src/decode.c in the function decode_R13_R2000. The flaw is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption), also tracked as CWE-789, and the root cause per the vendor advisory is that the class-decoding loop at approximately decode.c:628 calls realloc on every iteration without any prior sanity check on the num_classes value read from the file. Because that count comes straight from attacker-controlled input, a small file can declare a very large class count and force a long sequence of allocations, producing a slow loop and resource exhaustion rather than memory corruption or code execution. The upstream fix in commit 9de893a2e395ff5ac104a46cca54c5e2cf8f02cf bounds the loop at 100 + (size / sizeof(Dwg_Class)) (each class entry is at minimum about 10 bytes on disk, so sizeof(Dwg_Class) is a deliberately generous upper bound), logs an error, sets DWG_ERR_VALUEOUTOFBOUNDS and jumps to handles_section. The CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) describes severity and prerequisites, not the trigger mechanism; the trigger itself is the manipulated num_classes field described by the vendor.

A crafted file must be parsed by the victim (AV:L, UI:R) with no privileges needed; the deterministic unchecked loop makes AC:L, and impact is availability-only (A:H, C:N/I:N).

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
LibreDWG is a free C library to read and write DWG files. Prior to 0.14, a specially crafted R13-R2000 DWG can trigger algorithmic resource exhaustion in decode_R13_R2000 in src/decode.c. The class-decoding loop performs realloc on every iteration without a sanity check on num_classes. Manipulating that field forces an extremely slow allocation loop and denial of service when the file is parsed. Running the parser in a sandbox with memory limits is a workaround rather than a remediation. This issue is fixed in version 0.14.
