Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a consuming application decode attacker-supplied ASN.1 data (APER, UPER, BER, or OER) through asn1c-generated OPEN_TYPE_*_get decoders, and that the decoded OPEN TYPE member pointer (*memb_ptr2) was not previously allocated - the NULL case the conditional check fails to cover before unconditional pointer arithmetic at line ~54. The advisory demonstrates this concretely with the E2AP types E2connectionUpdateAcknowledge (UPER trace) and E2connectionUpdateFailure (APER trace), noting E2AP itself uses APER, and supplies a minimal BER reproducer. Limiting factors: the vulnerability only matters for programs that actually invoke these generated OPEN TYPE decoders on untrusted input, impact is confined to a crash (DoS) with no demonstrated code execution or data exposure, and affected builds are those using the vulnerable asn1c skeletons prior to v1.2.5.

Impact

This is a CWE-476 NULL-pointer dereference in the mouse07410/asn1c ASN.1 compiler's generated OPEN TYPE decoders, and every signal points to a denial-of-service (crash), not a confidentiality or integrity compromise. The vuln.today decision label is 'awaiting_data', not an act_now/emergency state. There is no CISA KEV listing (not confirmed actively exploited) and no EPSS score supplied, so widespread exploitation cannot be quantified from the input. However, a public reproducer is attached to the GHSA-rcj5-gcvg-x796 advisory (a BER crash tarball plus demonstrated UPER/APER ASAN traces for E2connectionUpdateAcknowledge/Failure), the reporter states the crash reproduces reliably against both this repo and upstream vlm, and the fix is confirmed in v1.2.5 - so this is a real, confirmed, low-complexity defect rather than a theoretical one. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) lists ALL impact metrics as N (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N), which directly conflicts with the evidence: a segmentation fault that crashes the consuming program is an availability impact, so the published vector appears to understate impact and should be verified. In practical terms this is a moderate-priority DoS bug whose real-world risk is driven entirely by whether a given deployment feeds untrusted encoded input to asn1c-generated OPEN TYPE decoders (e.g., O-RAN E2AP stacks); it is not a high-CVSS remote-code-execution emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can deliver crafted APER/UPER/BER/OER-encoded data to a program built with asn1c-generated OPEN TYPE decoders - for example an O-RAN E2 node or Near-RT RIC parsing E2AP messages such as E2connectionUpdateAcknowledge - sends a message whose OPEN TYPE member pointer was never allocated. During decode the code performs NULL + member-offset pointer arithmetic and reads it, producing a segmentation fault that crashes the process (denial of service). A public crash reproducer is attached to the GHSA advisory, so the trigger is demonstrated; it is a crash reproducer and is not verified as weaponized code execution.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Denial of service in applications built with asn1c-generated ASN.1 decoders before asn1c 1.2.5: remote attackers can crash the consuming process by supplying APER, UPER, BER or OER encoded data whose OPEN TYPE member has not been allocated. The flaw is a CWE-476 NULL-pointer dereference in the shared OPEN_TYPE_*_get skeleton routines; the independent assessment rates it CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, meaning unauthenticated network-triggerable availability impact only. A public crash reproducer accompanies the GitHub advisory (a BER archive plus UPER and APER traces); no active exploitation or CISA KEV listing is reported, and no code execution or data exposure is demonstrated.

RemediationAI

Upgrade asn1c to 1.2.5 (release tag v1.2.5) or later and regenerate all affected ASN.1 decoder sources so the generated OPEN_TYPE_*_get functions include the allocation and null guard; the fixing changes are in https://github.com/mouse07410/asn1c/commit/3f7d3bbac8cd195d552945e79586ca5000f33280 and https://github.com/mouse07410/asn1c/commit/71ae41bd1cb146a432a39f72010b48f45ad69463. Upgrading the compiler alone does not change already-generated code, so rebuild consuming applications after regeneration and verify the regenerated routines contain the CALLOC guard. The GitHub advisory https://github.com/mouse07410/asn1c/security/advisories/GHSA-rcj5-gcvg-x796 documents the fixed release and lists no separate workaround.

Technical ContextAI · show details

asn1c is an ASN.1 compiler that emits C encoders and decoders from ASN.1 specifications. OPEN TYPE is an ASN.1 construct whose actual type is selected by another field, represented in generated code as a CHOICE. In OPEN_TYPE_aper_get, OPEN_TYPE_ber_get, OPEN_TYPE_oer_get and OPEN_TYPE_uper_get, the code conditionally calls CHOICE_variant_set_presence only when *memb_ptr2 is non-NULL, then unconditionally computes an inner value as (char *)*memb_ptr2 plus the member offset from elm->type->elements. If the OPEN TYPE member has not been allocated, the NULL pointer plus member offset is dereferenced, producing a SEGV at a low address (0xc8 or 0x8 in the advisory traces). The advisory demonstrates crashes for the E2AP type E2connectionUpdateAcknowledge under UPER and E2connectionUpdateFailure under APER, notes that E2AP uses APER, and includes a BER reproducer; OER is explicitly identified as affected. The fixing changes include commit 3f7d3bbac8cd195d552945e79586ca5000f33280, which allocates the CHOICE structure with CALLOC when *memb_ptr2 is NULL and fails decoding if allocation fails, along with commit 71ae41bd1cb146a432a39f72010b48f45ad69463 and the v1.2.5 release. The commit diff also patches OPEN_TYPE_jer.c, indicating the same pattern existed there. CWE-476 is the root-cause class; impact is confined to availability, with no demonstrated confidentiality or integrity effect.

DescriptionCVE.org

mouse07410/asn1c is an ASN.1 compiler. Prior to 1.2.5, OPEN TYPE decoding can dereference an unallocated member pointer and crash the consuming program. OPEN_TYPE_aper_get in OPEN_TYPE_aper.c, OPEN_TYPE_ber_get in OPEN_TYPE_ber.c, OPEN_TYPE_oer_get in OPEN_TYPE_oer.c, and OPEN_TYPE_uper_get in OPEN_TYPE_uper.c share the pattern: a conditional null check on *memb_ptr2 resets presence only when the member exists, but execution then unconditionally computes an inner value from that pointer and a member offset. If the OPEN TYPE member has not been allocated, the null-pointer arithmetic and subsequent read cause a segmentation fault. The advisory demonstrates UPER and APER crashes for E2connectionUpdateAcknowledge, notes that E2AP uses APER, and provides a BER reproducer; OER is also explicitly identified as affected. This issue is fixed in version 1.2.5.
