MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that sniproxy be configured with a wildcard backend that triggers asynchronous DNS resolution for the requested name, and that the attacker can reach the TLS/HTTP listener. The attacker sends a 254- or 255-character TLS SNI name or HTTP Host header matching that wildcard backend, then closes the connection mid-resolution so the cancel path runs on an uninitialized query handle. No authentication or user interaction is needed (PR:N/UI:N). The limiting factor is the configuration dependency: deployments without a wildcard/resolving backend that produces an unset query_handle may not reach the vulnerable resolv_cancel() path, and impact is confined to a crash (availability loss) with no code execution or data exposure. |
| Impact | Signals align on a moderate-to-high availability risk with no confidentiality or integrity exposure. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a remotely reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated trigger, and the only impact is VA:H - the daemon crashes. There is no confirmed active exploitation: CISA KEV status is not indicated, and no EPSS probability was supplied, so widespread-exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the input. No working exploit code is marked as available; the references are a vendor issue, the vulnerable source lines, fork patch commits, and a VulnCheck advisory. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a real but non-emergency priority. The practical risk is bounded by impact type: this is a pure denial-of-service (crash) against a reverse/SNI proxy, not RCE or data exposure, but because it is remote, unauthenticated, trivially repeatable, and takes down the proxy, it should be patched promptly where sniproxy is exposed and uses a wildcard backend. The CVSS 3.1 severity ceiling for a crash-only, scope-unchanged bug keeps this below RCE-class urgency despite the network vector. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote, unauthenticated attacker opens a connection to an internet-facing sniproxy (TLS or HTTP) and sends a 254- or 255-character SNI name or HTTP Host header that matches a wildcard backend requiring DNS resolution, then abruptly closes the connection. The close path calls resolv_cancel() on an uninitialized/NULL query handle, dereferencing a NULL pointer and crashing the daemon, dropping all proxied traffic. No public working exploit is marked as available, but the trigger is simple and reliably described in the vendor issue and VulnCheck advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in sniproxy through 0.7.0 lets remote unauthenticated attackers crash the daemon by sending a 254- or 255-character TLS SNI name or HTTP Host header that matches a wildcard backend, then closing the connection while asynchronous DNS resolution is still in flight. Impact is availability-only - the proxy terminates with no confidentiality or integrity exposure and no code execution path. Exploitation is configuration-dependent: the deployment must have a wildcard backend that triggers asynchronous resolution for attacker-supplied names and must expose the TLS/HTTP listener to the attacker; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the case is not in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Vendor patch status is 'available', but the fixes supplied are two upstream-style commits in a fork rather than a confirmed tagged release: https://github.com/renaudallard/sniproxy/commit/d5d78290c8fe15d9aa12185d2c57739b7b0c6a6b (adds the NULL guard on resolv_cancel() and clears con->query_handle in close_client_socket()) and https://github.com/renaudallard/sniproxy/commit/17986ba7397297313331297cac3b9eb3f0ba96b7 - upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. Until a tagged release carrying these changes is verified, build from the patched commits or backport the NULL check and handle reset, and track issue #411 for the official release. As a compensating control, avoid or remove wildcard backend entries that force asynchronous DNS resolution of attacker-supplied hostnames on internet-facing listeners; the trade-off is loss of catch-all proxying for domains you do not enumerate explicitly. Restricting the SNI/HTTP listener to trusted networks reduces exposure but is not a complete fix, since any reachable client can trigger the crash.

Technical ContextAI · show details
sniproxy is a lightweight C proxy that routes TLS (via SNI) and HTTP (via Host header) connections to backends based on the requested hostname. When a hostname matches a wildcard backend, sniproxy issues an asynchronous DNS query through its resolver layer and stores the resulting handle in the connection's query_handle field. The vulnerable flow is in close_client_socket() in src/connection.c (lines ~737-738 in the referenced snapshot), which calls resolv_cancel(con->query_handle) unconditionally on teardown; resolv_cancel() in src/resolv.c (lines ~219-224) then dereferences that handle. If resolution for an overlong (254/255 character) hostname has not yet completed when the peer closes the connection, the handle is unset and the dereference faults. This is CWE-476 (NULL Pointer Dereference), a classic lifecycle/state-cleanup bug rather than a memory-corruption primitive, which is why the assessed impact is pure availability loss (A:H) with no read or write of attacker-controlled memory. The referenced upstream fix adds a NULL check around resolv_cancel() and clears con->query_handle afterwards, matching the root cause exactly.

DescriptionCVE.org
sniproxy through 0.7.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in resolv_cancel() that allows remote unauthenticated attackers to crash the daemon by sending overlong hostnames. Attackers can send a 254 or 255 character TLS SNI name or HTTP Host header matching a wildcard backend, then close the connection to terminate the proxy.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity availability flaw in sniproxy (up to 0.7.0) allows unauthenticated attackers to crash the daemon, disrupting services that depend on the proxy. Organizations using sniproxy with wildcard backends may face service outages, impacting users and operations. Leadership should prioritize patching to maintain service continuity.
