| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable only against a ZITADEL instance that serves the hosted Login V2 UI, and only for an active user who has not yet set ANY authentication method - no password, no passkey, and no linked identity provider - such as invited users or users created through the API before their first sign-in. The attacker must know that user's user ID or login name, and can then forge the verificationCheck cookie because its value is only a SHA-256 of the user ID and the browser fingerprint cookie, with no server-side secret involved. For the IdP-linking vector, an identity provider that allows account linking must be configured. Limiting factors confirmed by the vendor: users who already have any authentication method are not affected; deployments not serving Login V2 are not affected; and the ZITADEL APIs themselves are not affected. There is no configuration that fully closes the gap on unpatched versions - upgrading to 4.19.5 is the only complete fix; as a partial mitigation the vendor recommends creating users with an initial credential so no active user is left without an authentication method. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high priority, not a CVSS-inflated non-issue. The signals mostly align upward: the vendor (ZITADEL/GHSA-84fg-x5h4-w8xv) confirms a real authentication-bypass/account-takeover in the hosted Login V2 UI, VulnCheck independently published an advisory, and the vuln.today decision label is act_now. The CVSS 4.0 score is 9.1 (Critical) with network vector and no privileges or user interaction (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N) and high confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H), which matches an unauthenticated full account takeover. The tempering factors are built into the vector itself: AC:H and AT:P reflect real preconditions - the target must be an active user who has not yet set any authentication method, and the attacker must know that user's ID or login name. No availability impact (VA:N) and no scope/subsequent-system impact are claimed. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis - the two references are the vendor and VulnCheck advisories, not PoC or exploit code, and there is no CISA KEV listing. EPSS is not provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quoted. The mechanism is well documented and conceptually simple (the proof cookie was a SHA-256 of client-controllable values with no server-side secret), so the gap between 'no public exploit' and 'trivially reproducible' is small; the act_now label should be treated as authoritative despite the absence of KEV/EPSS. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An organization invites new users or provisions them via the ZITADEL API, leaving them active but without any password, passkey, or IdP link before first sign-in. An unauthenticated attacker who learns such a user's ID or login name computes a valid verificationCheck cookie (SHA-256 of the user ID and the browser fingerprint cookie - all client-known values), presents it to Login V2 as proof of recent verification, and sets a password (or registers a passkey, or links their own external IdP account), then signs in as that user and inherits its ZITADEL permissions and access to every downstream application. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the forging method is fully described in the vendor advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 29, 2026
Account takeover in ZITADEL's hosted Login V2 UI allows unauthenticated remote attackers to seize active users who have not yet registered any authentication method. The verificationCheck cookie is only a SHA-256 hash of the user ID and the browser fingerprint cookie with no server-side secret, so anyone who knows a user ID or login name can forge it and set a password, register a passkey, or link an attacker-controlled identity provider, then sign in as that user. ZITADEL 4.0.0 through 4.19.4 (including RC versions) are affected and 4.19.5 fixes the flaw; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, yet priority guidance is to act now because the impact is unauthenticated takeover of accounts that gate downstream applications.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to ZITADEL 4.19.5 or later (https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/releases/tag/v4.19.5) per advisory GHSA-84fg-x5h4-w8xv; this is the only complete fix, and the vendor states there is no configuration that fully closes the gap on unpatched versions. After upgrading, ensure ZITADEL_SESSION_COOKIE_SECRET is set to a randomly generated value of at least 32 characters (for example openssl rand -base64 32) rather than a value copied from an example configuration, because the new signed proofs use that secret and Login V2 otherwise derives the key from its configured API credential. For unpatched instances the vendor's partial mitigation is to create users with an initial credential so that no active user is left without a password, passkey or IdP link - this reduces the population of exploitable accounts but does not remove the forgeable-cookie weakness itself, so it should only be used while an upgrade is being scheduled. The remediation should be treated as urgent given the unauthenticated account-takeover impact and the act-now prioritisation; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, so there is no evidence of active exploitation to date.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ZITADEL's Login V2 UI is the hosted authentication front end that handles email/invite verification and first-credential enrolment, and it recorded a successful verification in a verificationCheck cookie. That value was computed as a SHA-256 hash over the user ID plus the browser fingerprint cookie, i.e. only client-controlled or client-discoverable inputs, with no server-side secret or key material - the root cause class is CWE-565, Reliance on Cookies without Validation and Integrity Checking. Because the proof carried no cryptographic integrity protection, it could be recomputed offline for any known user and was accepted as evidence of a recent verification wherever a user without an authentication method sets a first credential: password setup (performed with Login V2's own service credential), passkey registration via a session that only identifies the user by login name, and linking an external identity provider when account linking is enabled. The affected component is the Login V2 UI only, mapped by CPE cpe:2.3:a:zitadel:zitadel; the ZITADEL APIs themselves were not affected, and users who already hold a password, passkey or IdP link are out of scope because the forgeable proof was only honoured for users with no credential at all. The fix replaces the derivation with a proof issued by Login V2 itself after the backend accepts the email or invite code, signed with a server-side secret (ZITADEL_SESSION_COOKIE_SECRET, or a key derived from the configured API credential if unset), bound to both user and browser, expiring after five minutes, and rejecting old-format values.

2DescriptionCVE.org
ZITADEL 4.0.0 before 4.19.5 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in the Login V2 UI that allows unauthenticated attackers to set the first credential of users lacking any authentication method. Attackers can compute a valid verificationCheck cookie from the user ID and browser fingerprint to set a password, register a passkey, or link an identity provider, taking over the account.

Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-119128 is a critical account takeover vulnerability in ZITADEL's hosted Login V2, enabling unauthenticated attackers to seize user accounts that have not yet registered an authentication method. With a CVSS score of 9.1, this flaw affects ZITADEL versions 4.0.0 through 4.19.4 and can expose any downstream applications relying on ZITADEL for identity. Leadership should prioritize immediate remediation because compromised accounts can be used to bypass access controls and jeopardize sensitive business systems.
