MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The target must be a Node.js app using dd-trace 2.0.0-<5.131.1 or 6.0.0-<6.20.1 with an affected HTTP tracing integration that records query strings in URL span tags - this uses the vulnerable default DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP and is enabled by DEFAULT, so no non-standard configuration is required. The attacker needs only to reach an instrumented HTTP endpoint and control a URL query string (PR:N/UI:N). Limiting factors: exploitation is neutralized if the operator has already overridden DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP with the fixed pattern the advisory provides (and restarted), or if query-string capture in URL span tags is disabled; impact is confined to availability (CPU/event-loop stall) with no data exposure. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) is internally consistent with the description: the vulnerable obfuscation regex is applied synchronously to attacker-controlled URL query strings over the network, with no authentication, no user interaction, and low complexity - so the trigger is easy to reach remotely. Impact is strictly availability (VA:H; VC:N/VI:N) - a ReDoS (CWE-1333) that burns CPU and stalls Node.js request processing, with no confidentiality or integrity consequence. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week' (prioritize, but not emergency). Signals are partly missing rather than conflicting: no EPSS exploitation-probability score is provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and the GHSA advisory deliberately omits triggering inputs and reproduction steps, so no public exploit is identified. Net: a real high-severity DoS worth patching within the vendor-suggested week, but it is a single-event-loop stall rather than a confirmed, widely-weaponized threat - treat as availability-priority, not data-breach-priority. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends HTTP requests with a specially crafted query string to any endpoint of a Node.js application instrumented with an affected dd-trace HTTP integration. Because the default query-string obfuscation regex is applied synchronously on the event loop while recording URL span metadata, the crafted input triggers catastrophic backtracking, pinning CPU and stalling all request processing until the application is effectively unavailable. No proof-of-concept or working exploit code is identified at time of analysis; the advisory withholds the triggering inputs. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
A regular-expression denial of service exists in the Datadog APM client for Node.js (dd-trace-js) versions 2.0.0 through 5.131.0 and 6.0.0 through 6.20.0, where the default DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP can backtrack excessively on attacker-controlled URL query strings. Because the pattern runs synchronously while recording HTTP URL span metadata - and is enabled by default for affected HTTP tracing integrations that capture query strings - an unauthenticated remote attacker who can reach an instrumented endpoint and supply a crafted query string can pin the CPU and stall request processing, degrading or taking down the instrumented application. Impact is confined to availability with no data exposure; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and vendor fixes ship in dd-trace 5.131.1 and 6.20.1.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the dd-trace npm dependency to 5.131.1 (for the 5.x line) or 6.20.1 (for the 6.x line) or later; these versions ship the rewritten default DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP and the associated replacement logic, per GHSA-x94g-w73q-hpcw and PR https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-js/pull/10675. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the vendor-documented workaround is to set DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP to the fixed pattern published in the advisory and then restart the instrumented application - the workaround only takes effect after a restart, and any deployment that leaves the default pattern in place remains vulnerable. Operators who have disabled query-string capture in URL span tags, or who already override the regex with the fixed pattern, are not exposed to this backtracking behavior. Note that changing the regex affects what appears in span tags, so validate redaction behavior in staging before rolling out to production.

Technical ContextAI · show details
dd-trace-js is Datadog's Node.js APM tracing library, which instruments inbound and outbound HTTP calls and records URL metadata (including query strings) on span tags. To keep secrets out of trace data, the library applies a built-in regular expression, DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP, that redacts credential-like query parameters (password, token, api key, bearer tokens, JWTs, private key blocks, SSH key blobs, and similar) before the URL is attached to a span. The flaw is CWE-1333 (Inefficient Regular Expression Complexity): the shipped default pattern contains ambiguous, heavily nested alternations - particularly around percent-encoded quoting, dotted JWT structures, and the SSH-key suffix quantifiers - that can backtrack catastrophically on certain inputs. The regex is evaluated synchronously in the query-string obfuscation helper (packages/dd-trace/src/plugins/util/url.js) on the request path, so a single crafted query string can occupy the Node.js event loop for an extended period, delaying all other in-flight requests handled by that process. The upstream fix (PR #10675, commits 5eeee790c93036a50549056fc890028cb4c86b1b and cf4e68a45fa1442c9850f2086c81901258e821b8) rewrites the default pattern to a length of 837 characters with restructured, bounded alternations, and adjusts the replacement logic so that for the default obfuscator the capture group used as a JWT delimiter is preserved via '$1<redacted>' while user-supplied regexes continue to be replaced with '<redacted>' as before. Regression tests cover JWT, password, key-name, and false-positive cases such as keyLength and monkeyIsland.

2DescriptionCVE.org
dd-trace is the Datadog APM client for Node.js. From 2.0.0 until 5.131.1 and 6.20.1, the default DD_TRACE_OBFUSCATION_QUERY_STRING_REGEXP can perform excessive backtracking on attacker-controlled URL query strings. The expression is applied synchronously while recording HTTP URL metadata, allowing a crafted request to consume excessive CPU, stall request processing, and make the instrumented application unavailable. This issue is fixed in versions 5.131.1 and 6.20.1.

Executive ViewAI
A high-severity availability flaw in Datadog's APM client for Node.js (dd-trace-js) can allow unauthenticated attackers to stall or take down applications that capture URL query strings. Organizations using affected versions face potential service disruptions, impacting customers and operations. Leadership should prioritize remediation because the vulnerability is remotely exploitable and requires no authentication, though no active exploitation has been observed.
