| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to drive the file-upload path in src/inc/core.php architect() / api.class.php upload() (URL-pull or base64 upload) and to issue concurrent requests whose temp-file names collide - in the vulnerable code the name is derived from user-controlled input such as the basename of the upload URL, producing a predictable ROOT/tmp path. The attacker must then win the TOCTOU race window between the mime/sha1/naughty-list validation and storeFile() so a file is swapped in after it was validated. Limiting factors: the race window is narrow and timing-dependent (AC:H, vendor calls exploitability 'difficult'), the attacker needs upload capability against the instance (vendor rates PR:L; note PictShare may allow anonymous uploads by default, which would lower this), and the practical impact is limited to bypassing upload content checks rather than gaining code execution. Fixed in 3.7.2, which replaces user-derived temp names with getTempFilePath() using random_bytes(16). |
| Impact | This is a low-priority issue despite being remotely reachable. The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) yields a base score of only 1.2, and every impact metric is Low (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) with no scope change - signals that align with the vuln.today 'monitor' decision label rather than any act_now/emergency urgency. The 'E:P' metric and the description ('The exploit has been published') indicate proof-of-concept maturity, not active exploitation: there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score in the supplied data, so widespread or automated exploitation is not indicated. The key limiting factor is the high attack complexity: the GitHub commit evidence confirms the mechanism is a TOCTOU race where two concurrent requests share a temp-file name derived from user input (the basename of an upload URL) and can swap each other's file between validation and storeFile(). Winning that narrow race window is difficult (AC:H, 'exploitability regarded as difficult'), and the payoff is only bypassing mime/sha1/naughty-list checks on a self-hosted image host, not code execution. Note one tension to verify: the vendor assigns PR:L, but PictShare commonly permits anonymous uploads in default deployments, in which case PR:N would be more accurate - this does not change the low overall severity. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker issues two near-simultaneous upload requests (URL-pull or base64) to a PictShare instance, crafted so both resolve to the same predictable temp-file path in ROOT/tmp. By winning the race between the validation step and storeFile(), the attacker swaps in a file that was never checked, causing an unsupported or naughty-listed file to be stored. A published proof-of-concept and a write-up (xmit.xyz) exist, but the high-complexity timing requirement makes reliable exploitation difficult. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026
A race condition in HaschekSolutions PictShare through 3.7.1 allows an attacker who can drive the upload endpoints to swap a file between validation and storage, bypassing the mime-type, SHA-1 and naughty-list checks enforced in architect() and API::upload(). The flaw is reachable over the network but requires winning a narrow, timing-dependent TOCTOU window (AC:H, PR:L per the CVSS vector; vendor rates exploitability as difficult), and its practical impact is limited to integrity of stored uploads rather than code execution. A public write-up and PoC reference exist (xmit.xyz); it is not verified as working exploit code, there is no KEV listing, and the priority decision is monitor. Fixed in release 3.7.2 (commit 6306e33).
RemediationAI
Upgrade PictShare to version 3.7.2, which is the vendor-released fix and is explicitly stated to be sufficient to resolve this issue; the same change is contained in commit 6306e33da630c04ddff60703922c2ec7b7539452. Release artifact: https://github.com/HaschekSolutions/pictshare/releases/tag/v3.7.2; advisory: https://vuldb.com/vuln/426302. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the exposure comes entirely from the two upload paths that build temp names from user input, so disabling or blocking the URL-pull (remote URL fetch) and base64 upload endpoints at the web server or reverse proxy removes the attack surface at the cost of losing those upload modes. Restricting the instance so that only trusted accounts can upload - and, where the deployment permits anonymous uploads by default, disabling anonymous uploads - raises the PR:L prerequisite without touching the code, though it does not remove the underlying race. None of these workarounds is a complete substitute for the 3.7.2 upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details
PictShare is a PHP image/file hosting application. In the vulnerable code, the upload pipeline in src/inc/api.class.php (upload()) and src/inc/core.php (architect()) writes incoming content to a temporary file under ROOT/tmp whose name is derived from user-controlled input - the basename of a supplied remote URL for URL-pull uploads, or an md5(rand(0,10000) . time()) . time() value for base64 uploads - instead of from a cryptographically random source. Because those names are predictable and can be shared across two concurrent requests, an attacker can arrange for two requests to land on the same temporary path and swap the file content in the window between the mime-type / SHA-1 / naughty-list validation and the storeFile() call, so that content which never passed validation is persisted. That is a classic time-of-check-to-time-of-use race (CWE-362). The upstream fix replaces the user-derived names with getTempFilePath(), which builds the path from bin2hex(random_bytes(16)) with a fixed prefix inside ROOT/tmp, and adds handleOwnTempFile() so temp files created by PictShare itself are unlinked when handleFile() rejects them (duplicate, naughty list, unsupported type); unit tests assert the new path helper is unpredictable across seeded mt_srand() states and the integration tests assert no stray temp files remain after rejected base64 uploads. No CPE strings were supplied with the available data, so exact product identification rests on the vendor repository and release tags.
