Exploitation Conditions

The LiveWallpaper 2.6.8.0 LocalServer must be running on the Windows host and its SignalR hub /LiveWallpaper/UploadFile endpoint must be reachable by the attacker; because the endpoint has missing authentication (CWE-306, PR:N) no credentials or user interaction are required against a default install. The limiting factor is network reachability: the component is a local server, so whether a remote attacker can reach it depends on the listener binding to a non-loopback interface (not confirmed in the sources) rather than being restricted to localhost. Pre-patch, exploitation also relies on the absence of path-normalization and extension filtering - the fix adds SecurityGuard.IsPathUnderDir checks and blocks executable extensions, so a patched instance removes the file-escape and executable-upload conditions.

Impact

The input assigns CVSS 4.0 base score 6.9 (medium) with a fully remote, unauthenticated vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) but only low impact across all three dimensions (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L), and the threat metric E:P marks exploit maturity as proof-of-concept rather than functional. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV entry are present in the input, so there is no signal of widespread or confirmed active exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', indicating a schedulable rather than emergency priority. The attack vector is marked AV:N and the description states remote exploitation is possible, but the component is LiveWallpaper's LocalServer SignalR hub - whether it is reachable off-host depends on whether the listener binds beyond loopback, which the available sources do not confirm; verify the bind address before treating this as internet-reachable. The source diff confirms the fix hardens /LiveWallpaper/UploadFile against directory escape (..\ traversal and same-prefix bypass) and blocks executable file extensions, so pre-patch the missing-authentication flaw (CWE-306) allowed unauthenticated file write outside the wallpaper directory, which is consistent with the low-but-nonzero integrity/availability impact. Net: a real but modest-priority issue in a niche product - not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk mismatch, but also not an emergency given low impact, PoC-only maturity, and no KEV/EPSS escalation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker able to reach the LiveWallpaper LocalServer SignalR hub sends a crafted multipart upload to /LiveWallpaper/UploadFile without any authentication (CWE-306), using a manipulated filename to write a file outside the intended wallpaper directory on the Windows host. A public PoC reference exists (jfyuhong advisory) but it is not verified as working exploit code, and CVSS attack complexity is low (AC:L) with no user interaction required. Impact is limited (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L), so the realistic outcome is unauthorized file write/overwrite rather than direct high-privilege code execution.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026

Missing authentication on the SignalR hub of GiantappMan LiveWallPaper 2.6.8.0's local server component lets remote attackers invoke the /LiveWallpaper/UploadFile endpoint without any credentials or user interaction, giving low-level confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (CVSS 4.0 base 6.9). Pre-patch code in the same request path also lacks path normalization and file-extension filtering, so the same unauthenticated channel can be abused for file writes outside the wallpaper directory and for uploading executable files. A public PoC reference exists; it is not verified as working exploit code, no CISA KEV entry is associated with this CVE, and the practical exposure depends on whether the LocalServer listens beyond loopback on the Windows host.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: commit b62f878899adbfc2968e3345442f3a3df91b774d in the GiantappMan/livewallpaper repository (https://github.com/GiantappMan/livewallpaper/commit/b62f878899adbfc2968e3345442f3a3df91b774d); upgrade to a LiveWallPaper build that contains this commit, since an independently versioned release number is not confirmed in the available data. The commit is the complete fix as described by the vendor: it adds SecurityGuard.IsPathUnderDir/NormalizePath containment checks in LiveWallpaperController.UploadFile, LiveWallpaperHub and AssetsController, strips path components from uploaded filenames, and rejects executable file extensions on network uploads, so instances that skip it retain both the unauthenticated upload entry point and the file-escape behavior. Where updating must be staged, reduce exposure by ensuring the LocalServer HTTP/SignalR listener is bound to loopback only and by stopping the LiveWallpaper.LocalServer process when the wallpaper UI is not in use; both measures shrink the remote attack surface to local processes only, at the cost of breaking remote/companion control of the wallpaper service. Blocking inbound TCP access to the LocalServer port at the Windows firewall achieves the same containment with similar functional impact. Technical ContextAI · show details

LiveWallPaper ships an ASP.NET Core-based companion service, LiveWallpaper.LocalServer, which exposes a SignalR hub (LiveWallpaperHub) plus MVC controllers such as LiveWallpaperController and AssetsController to the desktop UI. The flaw is class CWE-306, Missing Authentication for Critical Function: the hub method backing /LiveWallpaper/UploadFile performs privileged filesystem work but does not enforce any authentication or authorization check, and the published CVSS 4.0 vector is fully remote with PR:N and UI:N. The upstream fix commit b62f878899adbfc2968e3345442f3a3df91b774d confirms the surrounding risk surface: it introduces a SecurityGuard helper with IsPathUnderDir and NormalizePath checks, strips directory components from uploaded filenames via Path.GetFileName, blocks executable extensions on network uploads, and adds equivalent path-containment checks in LiveWallpaperHub (playback path) and AssetsController (image read), where the pre-patch code only compared directory prefixes with a substring test that could be bypassed with '..\' sequences or sibling directories sharing the same prefix. The same commit also gates the 'Lab' settings object behind DEBUG builds so it is not exposed or persisted in release builds. How the vulnerable endpoint is triggered beyond an unauthenticated SignalR invocation is not described in the available sources.

Missing authentication gives PR:N and low-complexity AC:L; AV:N follows the stated remote vector though the LocalServer bind is unverified; file write/read with directory restrictions yields low C/I/A.
