1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the deployment enables Parse Server's built-in SMS multi-factor authentication adapter AND that the attacker's account is enrolled in SMS MFA; the attacker must be authenticated as that account. The trigger is the SMS MFA verification-code request, into which the user injects additional account fields that Parse Server then saves with master privileges. Limiting factors: the vendor states there is no configuration workaround (only upgrading fully fixes it), deployments that do not enable SMS-based MFA are entirely unaffected, and the impact is confined to the requester's own account - other users' data cannot be modified.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals agree. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N) yields a base score of only 2.1, and the only impact metric set is VI:L - low integrity impact with no confidentiality (VC:N) or availability (VA:N) consequence, and no subsequent-system impact (SC/SI/SA:N). The vuln.today decision label is 'monitor', not act_now or emergency, which is consistent with the low score. No KEV listing is present (not confirmed actively exploited), no EPSS probability is supplied in the input, and the references are advisories rather than exploit code, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The practical ceiling on damage is narrow: an authenticated, SMS-MFA-enrolled user can only alter master-key-restricted fields on their OWN account (e.g., flip the email-verification flag or write beforeSave-protected values); the advisory explicitly states other users' data cannot be modified. The AT:P (attack requirement present) metric reflects that only deployments running the built-in SMS MFA adapter, and only accounts enrolled in SMS MFA, are affected. No conflicting signals were observed; the chief caveat is that EPSS and any independent telemetry are absent from the provided data.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already controls an SMS-MFA-enrolled Parse Server account initiates a login, and in the verification-code request they append extra account fields (such as the email-verification flag or values normally guarded by a beforeSave trigger). Because Parse Server persists the entire login request with master privileges at that step, the injected fields are written to the attacker's own account, bypassing the client-level write restrictions. No public exploit code was identified in the supplied data; exploitation is confined to the requester's own account.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026

SMS multi-factor authentication login-code requests in Parse Server are persisted with master privileges, letting an authenticated user who is enrolled in SMS MFA smuggle extra account fields into that request so they are written to their own record with restrictions bypassed. Successful abuse allows integrity-only changes to self-owned data, such as flipping the email-verification flag or setting values normally protected by beforeSave triggers; other users' records cannot be touched. The flaw affects only deployments using the built-in SMS MFA adapter with enrolled accounts, in versions before 8.6.104 and 9.0.0 through 9.10.5-alpha.5, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis while vendor patches are available.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the patched releases: Parse Server 8.6.104 for the 8.x line or 9.10.5-alpha.5 for the 9.x line, which carry the respective fixes in pull requests https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/pull/10782 and https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/pull/10781; the verification-code step then persists only the one-time-token authentication data instead of the whole login request. The vendor states there is no configuration workaround, so deployments that enable the built-in SMS MFA adapter should treat upgrading as the complete fix, and those that do not enable SMS-based MFA are unaffected and can schedule the upgrade normally. As a compensating measure while a patch is staged, the SMS MFA adapter can be disabled for affected accounts or the feature left unenabled, which removes the vulnerable code path entirely at the cost of losing SMS second-factor protection; per the vendor, no other configuration or Cloud Code change is documented as closing the bypass. Details are in the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-9rh6-r4ph-367v and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/parse-server-9.0.0-before-9.10.5-alpha.5-privilege-escalation-via-sms-mfa-login.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Parse Server is the Node.js/Express-based open-source backend that originated from Parse, exposing REST and GraphQL APIs where client requests are governed by class-level permissions, ACLs, and beforeSave/afterSave Cloud Code triggers. The master key is the privileged credential that bypasses those write restrictions entirely, so any code path that saves a client-supplied payload under master privileges effectively promotes untrusted input to trusted writes. This is a CWE-269 improper privilege management flaw in the built-in SMS multi-factor authentication adapter: when a user enrolled in SMS MFA requests a login verification code, the server saved the whole incoming login request with master privileges instead of persisting only the one-time-token authentication data, so additional fields carried in that request (for example the email-verification flag, or fields a beforeSave trigger would normally reject) landed on the account. The scope is bounded by design: only the requester's own account record is written, and only SMS-MFA-enrolled accounts on deployments that enable the built-in SMS MFA adapter are reachable. The upstream fix changes the verification-code step to write only the authentication data needed for the token against the stored account record, so extra request fields are discarded and beforeSave enforcement runs unchanged. CPE records identify the npm package parse-community:parse-server across affected version ranges.

DescriptionCVE.org

Parse Server before 8.6.104 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.5-alpha.5 saves the entire login request with master privileges when issuing an SMS multi-factor authentication verification code. An SMS MFA-enrolled user can include extra fields in that request to modify master-key-restricted fields on their own account, such as the email-verification flag or beforeSave-protected values.
