Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the host actually use espintcp (IPsec encapsulated in TCP) - the changelog explicitly states this is the only strparser consumer affected, and the alternative strp 'general mode' on strp->sk has never been used. The attacker must hold a local, low-privileged account (CVSS PR:L, AV:L) and must win a race between an in-flight __strp_recv() (running under bh_lock_sock or lock_sock) and parser teardown via strp_done(). Limiting factors: no network vector (local access mandatory), no remote/unauthenticated path, and exposure is gated on the espintcp feature being configured and in use rather than on a default kernel configuration; hosts not using espintcp are not reachable through this flaw.

Impact

Signals point in two directions and should be reconciled carefully. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.8 HIGH) describes a locally-reachable, low-privilege kernel use-after-free with full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact - a classic local privilege-escalation profile, not a remote-network threat. Against that, the EPSS score is only 0.21% (10th percentile), and the CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of widespread or confirmed active exploitation. The counterweight is the kernel changelog itself, which states that a reproducer has been published that turns the possible UAF into a working exploit; this raises practical concern well above what the low EPSS alone would suggest, because exploit maturity for the local LPE case appears high. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a serious-but-not-emergency local kernel flaw. The most important scoping fact is in the description: only the espintcp (IPsec-over-TCP) consumer of strparser is actually affected, and the vulnerable strp 'general mode' has never been used in 9 years - so real-world exposure is confined to hosts that use espintcp. Net: a genuine, exploit-backed local kernel UAF worth prompt patching on affected hosts, but the low EPSS and absence from KEV indicate it is not (yet) broadly exploited, and the local-only, espintcp-scoped vector limits mass-exploitation risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local, low-privileged user on a Linux host that uses espintcp races an in-flight __strp_recv() against strparser teardown (strp_done), triggering a use-after-free on the strparser's socket state. Per the kernel changelog a reproducer has been published that develops this UAF into a working exploit, enabling kernel-context code execution or a crash from an unprivileged account.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 24, 2026

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel's strparser affects kernels from 5.6 before the vendor fixes, allowing a local, low-privileged attacker to race an in-flight __strp_recv() against strp_done() and crash or potentially exploit the freed parser. The changelog states that only espintcp is reachable in practice and that a published reproducer turns the possible UAF into an exploit; EPSS is low at 0.21% (10th percentile) and the vendor fix is available, with vuln.today prioritization set to this_week.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released kernel updates to 6.6.160, 6.12.113, 6.18.57, 7.2.11 or 7.3 (or later); the fixes are in the stable commits referenced at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/9f3e9fe1b155e9b4572054d8d140586bc3512ecf and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a18dd388045dc7263d99a07db9de4e0f149ca8f1, with the NVD entry at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-99056. If an immediate kernel update is not possible, remove the reachable attack surface by not configuring or using espintcp on hosts where low-privileged local users may run; this prevents the race in the only consumer the changelog identifies as affected, at the cost of losing IPsec ESP-over-TCP transport (which is sometimes used for NAT/firewall traversal). The changelog states a public reproducer turns the possible UAF into an exploit, so prioritize the update on espintcp-enabled systems; EPSS is 0.21% (10th percentile) and vuln.today prioritization is this_week.

Technical ContextAI · show details

strparser is the kernel's stream parser used by consumers such as espintcp (IPsec ESP encapsulated in TCP). __strp_recv() runs under bh_lock_sock when invoked from ->sk_data_ready or under lock_sock when run from strp_work, while strp_done() assumes that after strp_stop() no further receive callbacks can be in flight. That assumption only holds when the caller provides locking; without it, an in-flight __strp_recv() can access a parser that strp_done() has already torn down, producing a use-after-free (CWE is not assigned in the input). The fix inserts a dummy lock_sock/release_sock pair in strp_done() to wait for in-flight receive work and converts the stopped/paused state bits to u8 to prevent races between strp_stop() and strp_pause/unpause(). The changelog notes a possible crash on strp->sk in 'general mode' strparser, but that mode has been unused for nine years and is not the practical exposure; espintcp is the only consumer the changelog identifies as affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

strparser: make sure __strp_recv isn't running before tearing down the parser

The comment above strp_done() claims that if strp is stopped, strp_recv will no longer be called. That's only true if the caller has a mechanism (eg locking) to guarantee that strp_recv() calls that started before strp_stop() have completed by the time we call strp_done().

This adds a dummy lock_sock/release_sock pair to guarantee that any in-flight strp_recv() (which runs under either bh_lock_sock or lock_sock, depending if it's called from ->sk_data_ready or strp_work) has completed.

Only espintcp can be affected by this race condition, but this patch makes sure no future user of strp can have the bug.

This could crash on strp->sk ("general mode" of strp), but this mode has been here for 9 years and has never been used. It'll be gone soon, no point worrying about it.

Switch the stopped/paused/etc bits to u8's to avoid races between strp_stop() and strp_pause/unpause().

A reproducer has been published and turns the possible UAF into an exploit [1].

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's strparser component affects systems running kernel versions 5.6 and later, potentially allowing a local attacker to crash or compromise the system. While the likelihood of exploitation is currently low, unpatched systems remain at risk and could impact service availability or data integrity.
