Exploitation Conditions

The Sender Rewriting Scheme (SRS) forwarding feature must be explicitly ENABLED - it is off by default, which is the primary limiting factor and excludes most deployments. The attacker must possess a valid, server-signed SRS address: either by being the recipient of a message the server forwarded (the envelope sender is rewritten to such an address), or by being an account holder who configures their account to forward to an outside mailbox and thereby mints one for an address of their choosing. The signed token is accepted for 21 days, giving a bounded abuse window. Affected versions are hMailServer 6.2.1 through 6.3.6; upgrading to 6.3.7 removes the flaw.

Impact

This is a medium-severity authorization flaw (CVSS 5.0, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N) that turns hMailServer into an open relay under a specific configuration. The signals are internally consistent but modest: the vector is network-reachable with low complexity, but it carries PR:L (per the precision rules, exploitation is authenticated/credential-bearing, since the attacker must hold a valid signed SRS token or an account), integrity impact only (I:L - abuse of the relay to send mail, no data disclosure or availability loss), and a scope change (S:C) reflecting that the abuse reaches external mail systems. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation - this reads as a correctness/abuse issue rather than an urgent widespread threat. The single most important risk-limiting factor is that SRS is OFF BY DEFAULT, so only deployments that explicitly enabled Sender Rewriting Scheme forwarding are affected. Net: a real bug worth patching for sites running SRS (open relays invite spam, blocklisting, and reputation damage), but low real-world priority for the broad hMailServer population given the non-default prerequisite, authenticated/token precondition, and absence of exploitation signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On an hMailServer instance (6.2.1-6.3.6) with SRS enabled, an attacker who holds a valid signed SRS address - for example, a user whose account forwards to an external mailbox, or anyone who received a forwarded message bearing such an address - crafts a message to that SRS address. The server mistakes the valid SRS address for a local recipient, skips the relay rules and SMTP authentication that should apply, and forwards the message to the external address encoded in the token, which remains usable for 21 days. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

Incorrect authorization in hMailServer's Sender Rewriting Scheme (SRS) handling (versions 6.2.1 through 6.3.6) allows an authenticated, low-privileged party holding a valid server-signed SRS address to relay mail through the server to arbitrary external recipients without satisfying the SMTP authentication that the relay rules normally impose. The flaw only matters when SRS forwarding is explicitly enabled (it is off by default), and the signed token remains usable for roughly 21 days, so exposure is bounded to deployments that use the feature and to attackers who can obtain a token - either as the recipient of a forwarded message or as an account holder who forwards mail to an outside mailbox. Fixed in release 6.3.7; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to hMailServer 6.3.7, which corrects the authorization check (release notes: https://gitlab.com/hmailserver/hmailserver/-/releases/v6.3.7; issue detail: https://gitlab.com/hmailserver/hmailserver/-/work_items/94). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the SRS feature in the server configuration - the trade-off is that forwarded mail will then fail SPF alignment at the forwarding domain and legitimate bounces may be lost or backscattered. Additionally, restrict account-level forwarding to external mailboxes to trusted users, since an account holder can otherwise mint a signed SRS address for any destination; the trade-off is reduced flexibility for users who legitimately forward mail off-site. As a monitoring control, alert on outbound SMTP sessions whose envelope sender is an SRS-form address but whose submission did not present valid SMTP credentials, and review outbound queue logs for mail originating from SRS addresses to unexpected external domains during the 21-day token validity window.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SRS is an email-forwarding mechanism that rewrites the envelope sender of forwarded mail into a signed address at the forwarding domain, so that bounces return to the forwarder rather than to the original sender and SPF checks survive forwarding. hMailServer's implementation classified any message addressed to a syntactically valid, correctly signed SRS address as delivery to a local recipient; that classification short-circuited the relay authorization path, including the SMTP authentication checks that normally gate relaying to non-local domains. As a result, the server decoded the SRS address and delivered the message to the outside address encoded within it, effectively acting as an open relay for anyone holding a valid token. The root cause is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization): the code conflated 'address resolves locally / is a known rewritten sender' with 'recipient is local and therefore exempt from relay controls'. The CVSS scope change (S:C) reflects that the impact crosses a trust boundary - mail is delivered into external domains under the server's authority. Tokens are accepted for 21 days, which bounds the abuse window per captured address.

DescriptionCVE.org

Incorrect authorization in the Sender Rewriting Scheme (SRS) of Progressive Robot hMailServer 6.2.1 through 6.3.6 allows a remote attacker to relay mail through the server to outside addresses. With SRS enabled, the server rewrites the envelope sender of mail it forwards to a signed SRS address at the forwarding domain, and passes a bounce to that address back to the original sender; but it took every message to a valid SRS address, whatever its sender, as delivery to a local recipient, so the relay rules and the SMTP authentication they require were not applied, and the message was delivered to the outside address the SRS address encodes. Anyone holding a valid SRS address of the server, such as the recipient of a forwarded message, could have the server relay mail to the address it encodes for 21 days, and an account holder whose account forwards to an outside mailbox could obtain one for any address. SRS is off by default.
