Exploitation Conditions

Exploitable only when the bRPC server (version < 1.18.0) is configured to serve nshead_mcpack, ubrpc, or public_pbrpc requests AND uses a recursive/self-referential protobuf message schema (e.g. a repeated message field that references its own type), with that endpoint reachable from an untrusted network. Given those conditions, exploitation is remote and unauthenticated (PR:N) with no user interaction and low complexity - a single deeply nested mcpack request crashes the process. Limiting factors: servers not using the mcpack2pb-backed protocols above, or not using a recursive-schema message, are not vulnerable; the fix (v1.18.0) enforces MAX_DEPTH=128, so legitimate requests nested deeper than 128 levels will also be rejected after patching.

Impact

This is a straightforward availability-only denial-of-service issue (CVSS 7.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, C:N/I:N/A:H), confirming remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity triggering with no confidentiality or integrity impact. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' (the referenced apache/brpc PR #3499 is a fix, not weaponized exploit code). The real-world risk is tempered by a significant precondition that the raw CVSS does not capture: the crash only occurs when a bRPC server is configured with a recursive-schema protobuf message serving nshead_mcpack/ubrpc/public_pbrpc protocols from an untrusted network - deployments not using those protocols or recursive schemas are not affected. The 7.5 score is therefore accurate for the worst case but overstates risk for typical deployments. This is a genuine but conditional DoS, not a high-CVSS-but-no-real-risk theoretical: a vulnerable, exposed server can be crashed trivially. Priority should be moderate - patch promptly where the affected protocols are exposed, lower urgency otherwise.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A bRPC service exposing nshead_mcpack/ubrpc/public_pbrpc endpoints with a self-referential (recursive) protobuf message schema is reachable from an untrusted network. An attacker sends a single crafted mcpack payload containing thousands of nested objects/arrays; the generated parser recurses once per level, exhausts the stack, and crashes the worker process, denying service to legitimate clients. No authentication or user interaction is required, and no public exploit code is currently identified.

AnalysisAIv2 – Oct 21, 2026

Denial of service in Apache bRPC before 1.18.0 allows remote attackers to crash the server by sending deeply nested mcpack data to endpoints serving nshead_mcpack, ubrpc, or public_pbrpc requests. The issue is reachable only when the service uses a recursive/self-referential protobuf schema and the endpoint is exposed to untrusted networks; the assessed vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N with availability-only impact. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
v1 Oct 21, 2026 - 05:37

Unauthenticated remote denial of service in Apache bRPC (brpc) through 1.17.0 lets a peer abort the server process by filling the HPACK dynamic table with minimal 33-byte header entries, tripping a CHECK() assertion in AddHeader and terminating the process. The flaw is reachable over any bRPC port serving HTTP/2 or gRPC via the h2 protocol, because HPACK decoding of incoming HEADERS blocks happens before any Authenticator check; servers that never expose h2/gRPC are not on this path. Assessed as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H (availability-only, unauthenticated); no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and neither EPSS, KEV, nor CWE data was supplied in the input, so risk is inferred from the advisory text. Note this is one of 35 defects fixed together in bRPC 1.18.0, alongside related h2 resource-consumption issues (CVE-2026-78058, CVE-2026-78066, CVE-2026-78334) that share the same attack surface.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0, which enforces the MAX_DEPTH=128 parsing limit on the mcpack2pb path; alternatively apply the upstream fix in https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3499. Be aware that after the fix, legitimate mcpack requests nested deeper than 128 levels will fail. If upgrading immediately is not possible, restrict network access to endpoints serving nshead_mcpack, ubrpc, or public_pbrpc to trusted clients, or disable those protocols where they are not required; both reduce exposure but can break existing integrations. Avoid recursive/self-referential protobuf schemas on externally reachable services if feasible. Technical ContextAI · show details

The mcpack2pb component converts mcpack-encoded requests into protobuf messages for bRPC servers using nshead_mcpack, ubrpc, or public_pbrpc. Its parser recursively descends nested objects and arrays without a depth limit (CWE-674, uncontrolled recursion); when the target protobuf schema is self-referential, such as a repeated message field of its own type, each incoming nesting level causes another parser recursion. A sufficiently deep request exhausts the process stack and crashes the server. The serializer already enforces the documented MAX_DEPTH limit of 128, and the fix applies the same limit to parsing; therefore requests nested beyond 128 levels are rejected after patching. Affected platforms are all platforms running Apache bRPC versions below 1.18.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache bRPC deployments running versions prior to 1.18.0 carry a remotely triggerable crash condition affecting any service that exposes nshead_mcpack, ubrpc, or public_pbrpc endpoints and uses recursive or self-referential protobuf schemas. An unauthenticated network attacker could force server termination, causing service outages for dependent applications and customers, though exploitation requires that specific schema-plus-exposure combination to be present. Leadership should care because remediation is a low-effort version upgrade, while inaction leaves internet-facing RPC tiers open to disruption without any credential barrier.
