MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that the ApostropheCMS import-export module (the @apostrophecms/import-export package, versions prior to 3.7.0) be installed and that its import routes be network-reachable by the attacker; core ApostropheCMS without this module is not affected. No authentication, user interaction, or special privileges are needed (PR:N/UI:N) because the resource-consuming middleware runs before the user/authorization check. The practical limiting factors are therefore (1) presence of the vulnerable import-export module, and (2) exposure of the import endpoints to untrusted networks; impact is limited to availability - no data is read or modified. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 7.5) is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated attacker can reach the import routes and cause bigUploadMiddleware to perform upload initialization, chunk storage, temporary processing, and attacker-declared cleanup BEFORE the user/authorization check rejects the request - a classic pre-auth resource-exhaustion pattern (CWE-400). The impact is confined to availability (C:N/I:N) - there is no code execution, data disclosure, or integrity loss, so despite the HIGH 7.5 score this is a DoS-only issue, not a system-compromise bug. No EPSS score was provided in the input, and there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' A key limiting factor NOT reflected in the raw CVSS is that the separately-versioned import-export module (fixed in 3.7.0) must be installed and its import routes exposed - core-only ApostropheCMS installs are not affected. Note also that SSVC/automatable data was not supplied. Net: a real patch-worthy priority for sites running the import-export module exposed to untrusted networks, but it should rank below any confidentiality/integrity or actively-exploited issue. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a public ApostropheCMS site that has the import-export module installed sends repeated unauthenticated requests to the import routes. Because bigUploadMiddleware runs its upload-initialization, chunk-storage and temporary-processing work before the authorization check rejects the request, each request consumes CPU, memory, disk and I/O, and a flood of them exhausts server resources and degrades or denies service. No public proof-of-concept exploit was referenced in the available data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Unauthenticated HTTP requests to ApostropheCMS import-export module routes before version 3.7.0 can force the server to initialize uploads, store chunks, and perform temporary processing, consuming disk, memory, and processing resources and degrading availability; ApostropheCMS core prior to 4.33.0 bundles the vulnerable module. The flaw is rated CVSS 7.5 with availability-only impact, requires the import-export module to be installed and its routes network-reachable, and has no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to ApostropheCMS 4.33.0 and @apostrophecms/import-export 3.7.0, which add the early authorization check before bigUploadMiddleware processes uploads; see the release notes at https://github.com/apostrophecms/apostrophe/releases/tag/apostrophe@4.33.0 and the fixes in commits 9500b8b0e1d630d5e07fbb5fd2c25ed0943845ce and f84fd41cbf6c22eb8d0008fc9c25df1f7130b350. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable or remove the import-export module, or restrict its import endpoints at the reverse proxy or WAF to trusted users and networks; this prevents exposure but removes import functionality, while rate limiting or request-size caps only reduce the resource-consumption rate rather than eliminating the pre-auth processing. Monitor temporary storage and worker memory for unauthenticated upload churn.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ApostropheCMS is a Node.js content management system, and its @apostrophecms/import-export package exposes import routes that invoke bigUploadMiddleware for multipart upload handling. In affected versions, that middleware runs before an early authorize callback, so anonymous clients can drive upload initialization, chunk storage, temporary file processing, and attacker-declared cleanup even though a later user check rejects the import. This is CWE-400 uncontrolled resource consumption: the resource-intensive work happens pre-authorization, which is why the CVSS vector is PR:N/UI:N with only availability impact. The CPE data identifies apostrophecms:apostrophe and @apostrophecms:import-export; the vulnerable code path is in the import-export module, so a core ApostropheCMS deployment without that package is not affected.

2DescriptionCVE.org
ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 4.33.0 of ApostropheCMS and 3.7.0 of the import-export module, import routes invoke bigUploadMiddleware without an early authorize callback, allowing unauthenticated requests to perform upload initialization, chunk storage, temporary processing, and attacker-declared cleanup work before the later user check rejects the import. This issue is fixed in ApostropheCMS 4.33.0 and import-export 3.7.0.

Executive ViewAI
ApostropheCMS deployments that include the import-export module, or run core releases before 4.33.0 that bundle it, are exposed to a high-severity availability flaw capable of exhausting server disk, memory, and processing capacity; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Because these systems typically power public-facing websites and content operations, sustained resource exhaustion could interrupt customer access, erode brand trust, and force costly manual recovery. Leadership should prioritize inventorying exposed instances and applying interim protections while the vendor fix is pending.
Disable or remove the import-export module where it is not required, block or rate-limit import-export routes at the reverse proxy or WAF, restrict network reachability of those routes, and monitor disk, memory, and CPU with alerting thresholds to detect early resource exhaustion.
