| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated, low-privileged account with a valid mailbox on the target Modoboa instance (PR:L) - any ordinary mail user suffices; no admin role is needed. The specific prerequisite is access to the /api/v2/armessages/ REST endpoint while running a version before 2.8.0, whose autoreply serializer lacked a validate_mbox ownership check, allowing the client-supplied mbox field to reference another user's mailbox. No special non-default configuration or user interaction is required. The key limiting factors are: the attacker must already hold valid credentials (not exploitable by unauthenticated attackers), and impact is confined to tampering with or disrupting auto-reply settings - there is no data disclosure or privilege escalation. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity authorization flaw (CWE-639 IDOR), and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L) and score of 5.3 align well with the description: network-reachable API, low attack complexity, but requiring an authenticated low-privileged account (PR:L), with no confidentiality loss and only limited integrity and availability impact. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The ceiling on impact is genuinely low: an attacker cannot read victim data (VC:N), only tamper with a victim's auto-reply message (integrity) or disrupt their auto-reply management (availability via MultipleObjectsReturned errors). This is a legitimate bug to patch but is not an emergency 'drop everything' issue; it is best characterized as a real but bounded, authenticated-only integrity/availability problem rather than a high-real-risk issue, and the low deployment footprint of Modoboa further reduces aggregate risk. The source-code diff confirms the root cause (a missing validate_mbox ownership check in the autoreply serializer), which independently corroborates the description and raises confidence in the technical assessment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A legitimate low-privileged mailbox user on a shared Modoboa instance sends a crafted POST to /api/v2/armessages/ specifying another user's mbox value instead of their own. Because the pre-2.8.0 serializer never verified mailbox ownership, the server creates or alters the victim's auto-reply, letting the attacker inject attacker-controlled subject/content or break the victim's auto-reply management via MultipleObjectsReturned errors. No public exploit code was identified in the input, but the flaw is trivially reproducible given a valid account and the documented endpoint. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Insecure direct object reference in Modoboa before 2.8.0 lets any authenticated user holding a valid mailbox POST to /api/v2/armessages/ with another user's mbox value, injecting attacker-controlled auto-reply subject and body into that victim's settings or breaking their auto-reply management through MultipleObjectsReturned errors. Exploitation requires a low-privileged account (CVSS PR:L) and no user interaction; impact is limited to integrity and availability of auto-reply configuration with no disclosure of mailbox data and no privilege escalation, making this a medium-severity authorization flaw. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; version 2.8.0 contains the vendor fix. Upstream Modoboa was informed via GitHub issue 3945, with the fix shipped in commit e0a4e3b9.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Modoboa 2.8.0, which contains commit e0a4e3b9 adding the validate_mbox ownership check plus related object-scoping fixes in the admin, calendars, maillog and transport v2 viewsets (release notes at https://github.com/modoboa/modoboa/releases/tag/2.8.0). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, actionable compensating controls are: front the /api/v2/armessages/ endpoint with a reverse-proxy rule that only allows it from trusted management networks or disables it entirely for ordinary mail users, accepting that users then cannot self-manage auto-replies; or, where the autoreply app is not needed, remove it from INSTALLED_APPS and its URL routing, which disables the feature outright for every tenant; and monitor API logs for POSTs to /api/v2/armessages/ whose mbox value does not match the authenticated account, since such requests are the direct signature of this IDOR. Note that the patch commit also corrects a 'permissions' vs 'permission_classes' typo in the maillog and transport viewsets, so instances remaining on older code may carry additional unenforced-authentication exposure on those endpoints until upgraded.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Modoboa is a Django-based mail hosting and management platform whose REST API is built on Django REST Framework viewsets and serializers. This is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key): the autoreply v2 serializer accepted a client-supplied mbox field and wrote an AutoReplyMessage for whatever mailbox name was submitted, with no check that the requesting user actually owned that mailbox. The fix commit e0a4e3b9 (modoboa/autoreply/api/v2/serializers.py) adds a validate_mbox hook that compares request.user.mailbox to the submitted value and raises a validation error 'You don't have ownership on this mailbox' otherwise. The same commit bundles related hardening: admin bulk_delete now scopes deletion to self.get_queryset() instead of the bare model, the calendars UserEventViewSet resolves calendars through UserCalendar.objects.filter(mailbox__user=request.user) and returns HTTP 404 otherwise, and the maillog/transport viewsets switch the mistyped 'permissions' attribute to 'permission_classes' so IsAuthenticated is actually enforced. Together these indicate a class of missing object-level authorization across the v2 API surface rather than an isolated bug.

DescriptionCVE.org
Modoboa before 2.8.0 contains an insecure direct object reference vulnerability that allows authenticated users to create auto-reply messages for arbitrary mailboxes by supplying another user's mbox value. Attackers can POST to /api/v2/armessages/ to inject attacker-controlled auto-reply subject and content into victims' settings or break their auto-reply management via MultipleObjectsReturned errors.
