| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a Vite development server (not a production build) that is (1) network-accessible rather than bound to the default localhost, (2) running on a non-Windows host, and (3) configured such that server.fs.deny does not block the target file. Additionally, an imported project file must have a root-relative browser URL that collides with an absolute host filesystem path, causing that path to be recorded in safeModulePaths; only files matching such application-graph-authorized URLs can be disclosed. Limiting factors: Windows hosts are unaffected; arbitrary path traversal is NOT possible (the host path must correspond to a project-relative URL); default localhost binding prevents remote reach; and the impact is confined to read disclosure of a single matching file outside the project root, with no integrity or availability effect. |
| Impact | This is a limited information-disclosure flaw in Vite's dev server, not a high-priority emergency. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.3 (Medium) and is internally consistent with the description: network reachable (AV:N), unauthenticated (PR:N), no user interaction, but with an attack requirement (AT:P) reflecting that a specific URL/host-path collision must exist, and only Low confidentiality impact with zero integrity or availability impact. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were supplied, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The GitHub advisory and patch commits confirm the bug and fix, but the source evidence provided is the vendor's remediation (PR #23656 and regression tests), not a weaponized attacker tool. The realistic risk is materially constrained by three gating conditions stated in the description - the dev server must be network-accessible (Vite binds to localhost by default), the host must be non-Windows, and server.fs.deny must not already block the target - and by the fact that it does NOT permit arbitrary path traversal (the disclosed host path must correspond to a project-relative URL authorized by the application graph). Net: a genuine but low-to-medium development-environment exposure, worth patching promptly where dev servers are exposed on a network, but not comparable to a remotely exploitable production RCE despite the 'network' vector. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A developer exposes a Vite dev server on a network interface (e.g. server.host set for LAN/container testing) on a non-Windows machine. An attacker who can reach that server issues a raw filesystem (@fs) request for a host path that collides with a root-relative module URL recorded in safeModulePaths, and if server.fs.deny does not block it, Vite returns the contents of that host file located outside the project root. No public exploit code was provided, and the attacker cannot traverse to arbitrary paths - only files matching an application-graph-authorized URL are disclosed. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Vite development servers can be induced to serve a single file from outside the project root after import analysis records a root-relative browser URL, rather than the cleaned resolved module identifier, in the internal safeModulePaths trust list. Only non-Windows hosts running a network-accessible dev server (not a production build) are affected, and only when server.fs.deny does not already block the target file; because the colliding path must correspond to a project-relative URL authorized by the application graph, arbitrary path traversal is not achievable and impact is limited to read disclosure with no integrity or availability effect. Exploitation requires the coincidence of an imported project file whose URL matches an absolute host path plus attacker access to the exposed dev server, which the independent assessment scores as higher complexity (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N); no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Vite to 6.4.4, 7.3.7, 8.1.6, 8.2.4, or 8.3.3 depending on the major line in use - these releases contain the fix that stores only the cleaned resolved module identifier in safeModulePaths (vendor advisory https://github.com/vitejs/vite/security/advisories/GHSA-rq7h-c2jc-7f22). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to stop exposing the dev server: leave server.host at its default localhost binding or front it with an authenticating reverse proxy / VPN, accepting that this breaks LAN device testing and container-to-host access workflows. Alternatively, add explicit server.fs.deny patterns (glob entries covering sensitive paths outside the project root) so the confused safe-module entry cannot be served, understanding that deny patterns are match-based and will not protect files an operator forgets to enumerate; combining a tightened server.fs.allow with deny rules reduces but does not eliminate the window. Moving development to a Windows host is not a practical mitigation despite Windows being unaffected, and note that server.fs.strict settings are not a substitute for the patched release. Because the dev server has no authentication, never bind it to 0.0.0.0 on untrusted networks.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Vite's dev server exposes raw filesystem content through its /@fs/ endpoint, gated by server.fs.allow and server.fs.deny plus an internal safeModulePaths set that records modules legitimately authorized through the application's import graph. In the vulnerable importAnalysis plugin, the code added fsPathFromUrl(stripBase(url, base)) to safeModulePaths; on POSIX-style hosts a root-relative browser URL such as /safe-module-path-unresolved is converted into a host-absolute path (/safe-module-path-unresolved) and stored as if it were a verified module. A later /@fs/ request for that same host path is then treated as authorized and the file is served even though it lies outside the project root. The upstream fix (PR #23656, commits 170b927, 45c0e33, c3e06f9, e570d8d, f0d76c7) only records cleanUrl(resolvedId) when a resolution actually succeeded, so unresolved SSR/synthetic imports no longer contaminate the trust list; the accompanying regression test asserts safeModulePaths does not contain the unresolved import, and a playground test verifies the cross-origin-ish /@fs fetch now returns 403 (404 on Windows or bundled dev builds). The weakness class is CWE-22 (path traversal), but here it is a constrained trust-list confusion rather than a classic ../ escape: the disclosed host path must still map to a project-relative URL that the application graph authorized.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Vite is a frontend tooling framework for JavaScript. Prior to 6.4.4, 7.3.7, 8.1.6, 8.2.4, and 8.3.3, import analysis can record a root-relative browser URL in safeModulePaths instead of the cleaned resolved module identifier. On a network-accessible, non-Windows development server, an imported project file whose URL matches an absolute host path can authorize a later raw-filesystem request for that host file, provided server.fs.deny does not block it. The request can disclose the matching file outside the project root, but it does not allow arbitrary path traversal because the host path must correspond to a project-relative URL authorized by the application graph. This issue is fixed in versions 6.4.4, 7.3.7, 8.1.6, 8.2.4, and 8.3.3.
