| Exploitation Conditions | The target must be a Windows host running Xinference ≤4.0.1, because the traversal relies on the backslash ('\') path separator - Linux/macOS deployments are not exploitable via this vector (reflected as AT:P). An attacker needs only network access to the registration endpoint and sends an unauthenticated POST /v1/model_registrations/{model_type} with a model_name containing backslash sequences like '..\..\evil'; no authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N) is required. Impact is limited to writing/deleting .json files in locations writable by the Xinference process, so the realistic blast radius depends on the service account's filesystem permissions. |
| Impact | Signals are moderately consistent and point to a real but conditional integrity risk rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) confirms remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity exploitation, and VI:H reflects the ability to overwrite configuration/data files; VC:N and VA:L correctly capture that there is no data disclosure and only limited availability impact (arbitrary .json deletion). The key mitigating signal is AT:P: exploitation requires the target to run on Windows, since the traversal depends on backslash path separators - Linux/macOS deployments (the common production case for inference servers) are not affected by this vector. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation; the finding originates from a VulnCheck advisory with a confirmed vendor patch. Net: this is a legitimate, patch-worthy integrity/persistence flaw for Windows-hosted Xinference instances, but the Windows-only precondition and absence of exploitation telemetry place it below a drop-everything priority for most fleets, which are Linux-based. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with network reach to a Windows-hosted Xinference server (≤4.0.1) sends an unauthenticated POST to /v1/model_registrations/{model_type} with a model_name such as '..\..\evil', causing the service to write or delete a .json file outside the model directory anywhere the Xinference process can write. By overwriting a configuration or persisted-model .json, the attacker can corrupt service state or plant attacker-controlled settings that persist across restarts. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the VulnCheck advisory and patch diff make the technique straightforward to reproduce. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 18, 2026
Unauthenticated attackers can abuse the model-registration endpoint in Xinference through 4.0.1 on Windows to write or delete arbitrary .json files by supplying a model_name containing backslash traversal sequences such as ..\..\evil. Successful exploitation targets files writable by the Xinference process, so configuration or data corruption is possible while confidentiality is not directly impacted. The vendor has published an upstream fix commit, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Patch status: Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. Apply the upstream fix commit beddc97ac211f8414597fe8479493be0603f7c84 (https://github.com/xorbitsai/inference/commit/beddc97ac211f8414597fe8479493be0603f7c84), which adds backslash and '.'/'..' rejection to is_valid_model_name; upgrade to the first vendor release that includes this commit. Until then, on Windows restrict network access to /v1/model_registrations/{model_type} to trusted clients, run Xinference under a least-privileged service account whose write access is limited to the intended model/cache directories, and monitor or remove unexpected .json files in those paths. Blocking the registration endpoint breaks custom model registration, and tightening filesystem permissions may disrupt model caching or persisted registrations; audit existing registrations for backslash or '..' names before and after remediation. See the VulnCheck advisory and GitHub issue for vendor details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Xinference registers custom models through POST /v1/model_registrations/{model_type}, and the supplied model_name is used to construct a filename under the model directory (see xinference/model/cache_manager.py lines 117-134). The pre-fix validation in xinference/model/utils.py (is_valid_model_name, lines 1175-1182) rejected forward slashes and several special characters but did not treat backslash as a path separator or reject the special names '.' and '..'. On Windows, where backslash is a directory separator, a name like ..\..\evil escapes the intended model directory and lets an unauthenticated remote attacker create or delete .json files wherever the service account has write permission. This is CWE-22 path traversal; the fix commit beddc97ac211f8414597fe8479493be0603f7c84 adds backslash and '.'/'..' rejection plus tests. Linux and macOS deployments are not exploitable through this specific backslash vector.

DescriptionCVE.org
Xinference through 4.0.1 contains a path traversal vulnerability on Windows that allows unauthenticated attackers to write and delete arbitrary .json files via backslash sequences in model_name. Attackers can register a persisted custom model through POST /v1/model_registrations/{model_type} with names like ..\..\evil to overwrite configuration or data files writable by the Xinference process.

Executive ViewAI
Xinference deployments on Windows at version 4.0.1 and earlier expose a model-registration endpoint that can be manipulated to create or delete arbitrary JSON files on the host, placing model-registry and configuration data at risk of corruption or tampering. Successful abuse can silently degrade or disable AI inference services that teams depend on, and any instance reachable from untrusted networks should be treated as a candidate for review. Remediation is low-effort and already available, so the priority is confirming where Xinference runs on Windows and closing the exposure quickly.
