1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access to a Windows host running NordVPN prior to version 8.12 with a low-privileged (non-administrator) account (PR:L, AV:L); the attacker connects to the local named pipe \\.\pipe\nord-security\v1\NordVpnService\Server, which fails to verify caller privileges, and calls ISettingsGrpc.StopService / ISettingsGrpc.ChangeServiceStartType with an arbitrary service name. Limiting factors: exploitation is not possible remotely and needs an existing local foothold; NordVPN must be installed and running; and only unprotected services can be affected - services guarded by Windows (PPL processes, Tamper Protection, e.g. Windows Defender) cannot be stopped or reconfigured, bounding the blast radius.

Impact

The input provides only a CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:L/SA:L, base 6.8, MEDIUM), with no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no POC indicator supplied. All signals point to a locally-exploitable, moderate-impact issue rather than a widespread emergency: AV:L means the attacker already needs a foothold on the host, PR:L means a low-privileged (non-admin) account suffices, and the impact is confined to availability (VA:H) plus limited integrity (SI:L/SA:L) - no confidentiality loss (VC:N/VI:N). The root cause (CWE-863 Incorrect Authorization) is that the NordVpnService named pipe trusts any connecting process, letting a low-privileged user invoke privileged service-control methods. There is no conflict between the CVSS vector and the description - both agree this is local, low-privilege, availability-only. Key missing data: EPSS probability is absent so widespread-exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified, and no POC/exploit-code signal was provided, so exploitation maturity is unknown. A mitigating factor materially caps real-world severity: Windows-protected services (PPL processes, Tamper Protection - e.g. Windows Defender) cannot be stopped or reconfigured, so the attacker cannot trivially disable the primary endpoint defense. Net assessment: a legitimate local privilege/authorization flaw worth patching, but not a drop-everything remote-RCE-class priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged user or malware already running on a Windows host with NordVPN prior to 8.12 impersonates a trusted process and connects to the \\.\pipe\nord-security\v1\NordVpnService\Server named pipe. It then calls ISettingsGrpc.StopService and ISettingsGrpc.ChangeServiceStartType with the names of unprotected security, logging, or monitoring services to stop them and set their startup type to Manual, degrading defenses or causing denial of service. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires local access and low (AC:L) complexity.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Incorrect authorization in the NordVPN for Windows client before version 8.12 lets a low-privileged local user impersonate a trusted process and drive privileged service-control operations through the named pipe \\.\pipe\nord-security\v1\NordVpnService\Server. By invoking the ISettingsGrpc.StopService and ISettingsGrpc.ChangeServiceStartType methods with an arbitrary service name, the attacker can halt unprotected Windows services and reset their startup type to Manual, producing denial of service against critical system components. Exploitation requires an existing local foothold on a host where NordVPN is installed and running - it cannot be triggered remotely - and is bounded because services protected by Windows (PPL processes and Tamper Protection, such as Windows Defender) are not affected; the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:H with a supplied CVSS 4.0 base of 6.8 (MEDIUM), and no CISA KEV listing or public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade NordVPN for Windows to version 8.12 or later, which is the vendor-released fix for this issue; the corrected build removes the ability of an unprivileged caller to drive the ISettingsGrpc service-control methods. Until the update is deployed, restrict access to the named pipe \\.\pipe\nord-security\v1\NordVpnService\Server by tightening its discretionary ACL so that only the NordVPN service account and administrators may connect - this blocks the attack path but must be revalidated after any client upgrade, since installers may recreate the pipe with default permissions. Additionally, limit the number of users holding interactive or service-logon rights on hosts running NordVPN, because the attack requires an existing low-privileged local foothold rather than remote access, and monitor Windows service state changes (for example Service Control Manager events recording service stops and start-type modifications) for unexpected transitions to Manual on security-relevant services. Note that disabling the NordVPN service entirely would remove the exposure but also disable VPN functionality and leak protection, so it should be treated only as a temporary measure. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is an instance of CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) in NordVPN's privileged Windows service architecture. NordVPN splits its design between a user-mode client and the NordVpnService, which exposes a gRPC-style management interface (ISettingsGrpc) over a local named pipe at \\.\pipe\nord-security\v1\NordVpnService\Server. The pipe server fails to verify the privileges of the connecting process, so any local process can connect, register itself as a trusted caller, and issue service-control commands that should be reserved for the elevated service. The exposed methods map onto Windows Service Control Manager primitives: StopService terminates a service, and ChangeServiceStartType alters the service's startup configuration to Manual. Because the service acts as a confused deputy - performing privileged operations on behalf of an unprivileged caller - a standard non-administrator account can revoke availability of any service not shielded by Windows' Protected Process Light or Tamper Protection mechanisms. Availability impact is the dominant effect (VA:H at the system scope), with a limited secondary integrity impact from modifying startup configuration; confidentiality and subsequent-system impact are not affected. The affected package is identified by the unconstrained CPE cpe:2.3:a:nord_security:nordvpn:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. the advisory applies to all releases prior to the fixed build 8.12.

DescriptionCVE.org

NordVPN for Windows allows local attackers to stop unprotected Windows system services and change their startup type to Manual via named pipes. The NordVPN user-mode application allows a low-privileged attacker to act as a trusted process and connect to the named pipe "\\.\pipe\nord-security\v1\NordVpnService\Server". The attacker can then invoke the "ISettingsGrpc.StopService" and "ISettingsGrpc.ChangeServiceStartType" methods with an arbitrary service name, allowing them to stop any unprotected Windows service and change its startup type. This leads to denial of service of critical system services. Services protected by Windows (PPL processes, Windows Tamper Protection), such as Windows Defender, cannot be stopped or reconfigured.
