MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Mattermost account on an affected version (11.7.x ≤ 11.7.10, 11.8.x ≤ 11.8.5, 11.9.x ≤ 11.9.1, 11.10.x ≤ 11.10.0) and the ability to edit one's own user notification properties (notify_props.mention_keys) - standard self-service functionality, not an administrative or non-default setting. The concrete prerequisite is that the attacker shares at least one channel with the victims, since the quadratic multibyte-keyword matching runs per post for each member; impact is scoped to CPU/latency degradation (availability only, no data exposure). LIMITING FACTORS: valid authentication is required (PR:L, so not exploitable by anonymous users), impact is confined to degraded performance rather than a crash (A:L), and effect is bounded to members of channels the attacker shares. |
| Impact | This is a low-to-moderate priority issue despite being network-reachable. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, base 4.3) is internally consistent with the description: an authenticated user (PR:L) can remotely (AV:N) and without user interaction (UI:N) trigger a resource-exhaustion condition with availability-only impact (A:L) and no confidentiality or integrity loss. The CWE-770 (uncontrolled resource allocation) classification and 'Denial Of Service' tag align with the described quadratic multibyte-keyword matching amplified by an unbounded notify_props.mention_keys list. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is present in the provided data, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the A:L (low, not high) rating indicates degraded performance rather than full outage. The main risk-limiting factors are the authentication requirement and the fact that impact is CPU degradation for channel members rather than a hard crash. MISSING DATA: no EPSS probability and no vendor severity beyond the CVSS base were supplied for cross-reference, and the referenced advisory URL (MMSA-2026-00773) is a generic security-updates landing page, not the specific advisory page - fix versions should be verified directly with Mattermost. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A legitimate authenticated Mattermost user edits their own notification preferences and stores an oversized notify_props.mention_keys list (many large multibyte keywords) on their profile. Because mention matching runs per post for every channel member and scales quadratically with keyword size/count, each message the attacker-controlled profile shares a channel with forces excessive CPU work, degrading post-processing latency for other members. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only normal self-service profile editing and no special tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026
Authenticated Mattermost users can degrade message post-processing latency for every member of the channels they share by storing an oversized list of custom mention keywords (notify_props.mention_keys) on their own profile, which the server then matches against each post. Because the matching routine scales quadratically and multibyte/Unicode keywords add per-character cost, and neither the number nor the size of stored keywords is capped, each post the attacker's channel peers send or receive is processed far more expensively on the attacker's behalf. Impact is confined to availability degradation (CVSS 4.3, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L; CWE-770); no data exposure or crash is involved, valid authentication plus at least one shared channel is required, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Patch status: no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, and no fixed version number is given in the data; administrators should track the Mattermost security updates page at https://mattermost.com/security-updates for the MMSA-2026-00773 entry and upgrade to the patched release for their 11.7.x, 11.8.x, 11.9.x or 11.10.x line as soon as it is published. Until then, apply compensating controls: enforce a server-side ceiling on mention_keys by truncating oversized arrays (for example with a scheduled job or direct database update against the Users/Preferences table) or by disabling non-administrative editing of large keyword lists if configuration permits, accepting that legitimate users with many keywords will lose some mention notifications; actively hunt for and clear outlier profiles whose keyword lists are abnormally large or long, since a single such account is sufficient to degrade processing for whole channels; and monitor post-processing latency and CPU on application nodes so outliers are detected quickly. Note that rate-limiting post creation does not mitigate this issue, because the CPU cost is incurred while processing other members' posts on behalf of the abusive profile, and that removing or capping keyword lists is the only effective lever available absent the vendor fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) in Mattermost's user notification preference handling. Mattermost persists each account's custom mention keywords as an array in notify_props.mention_keys; when a post is created, the server evaluates whether that post mentions a given user by scanning the post content against that user's keyword list before delivering notifications. Two control gaps combine: the platform does not bound the count or length of keywords a user may save into their own profile, and the keyword-matching loop is quadratic rather than linear, so cost grows roughly with keywords multiplied by post content (with additional multiplicative cost for multibyte keywords, where matching operates on character or byte sequences rather than simple tokens). The result is a per-post CPU amplification that is triggered by other users' normal activity but attributable to one user's profile settings, and it is bounded only by the membership of channels the attacker shares. The advisory (MMSA-2026-00773) covers the 11.7.x, 11.8.x, 11.9.x and 11.10.x release lines up to 11.7.10, 11.8.5, 11.9.1 and 11.10.0 respectively; no CPE strings were included in the available intelligence, and the sole reference is the vendor security-updates page at https://mattermost.com/security-updates.
