Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires (1) the attacker to be able to modify data that is bound to a Kendo UI Badge - specifically values passed to the Badge text method or supplied through text binding - which implies at least low-level write access to the bound data source (reflected in PR:L), and (2) a victim user to subsequently load a page where that Badge renders the attacker-controlled value (UI:R). It is limited to Kendo UI for jQuery versions from v2020.1.114 up to but not including 2026.3.1015; installations on 2026.3.1015 or later are not affected. Applications that never bind untrusted or user-modifiable data to a Badge, or that sanitize values before binding, are not realistically exploitable. There is no requirement for a non-default configuration beyond simply using the vulnerable Badge text rendering.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity stored/DOM cross-site scripting issue (CWE-80) with a vendor CVSS of 5.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). The signals are internally consistent and point to a real but not urgent priority: the network vector and low complexity make exploitation technically easy, but two factors meaningfully constrain real-world risk - PR:L means the attacker must already be an authenticated/privileged-enough user to modify the data bound to a Badge, and UI:R means a victim must actually render that Badge. The scope change (S:C) correctly reflects that injected script executes in the victim's browser context rather than the component's own, which is why confidentiality and integrity are rated Low rather than None, and availability is None. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was supplied in the input, and there is no evidence of public exploit code - so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' There is no conflict between the CVSS vector and the description: both describe a remote, interaction-dependent XSS requiring some level of data-write privilege. Overall this is a legitimate issue to patch on a normal cadence rather than an emergency; it is a textbook XSS with a meaningful privilege prerequisite, not a high-CVSS-but-illusory finding, but also not a wormable or unauthenticated bug.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with the ability to influence data bound to a Kendo UI Badge (for example a lower-privileged user whose profile field or record feeds a Badge's text) supplies a string containing an HTML event handler such as an onerror or onload attribute. Because the Badge text method renders the value as raw HTML without encoding, the payload executes JavaScript in the browser of any user who later views the page rendering that Badge, enabling session/data theft or actions in the victim's context. No public proof-of-concept was identified in the provided data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Cross-site scripting in Progress Kendo UI for jQuery (releases from v2020.1.114 through 2026.3.1015) lets an attacker who can influence data bound to a Badge widget inject HTML with event handlers that execute JavaScript in a victim's browser when the Badge renders that value. Because the Badge text method outputs string values as raw HTML rather than encoded text, the injected script runs in the origin of the hosting application, compromising the confidentiality and integrity of data that application can reach on the victim's behalf. Exploitation requires both write access to the bound data source (CVSS PR:L) and a victim subsequently loading the affected page (UI:R), giving a vendor score of 5.4; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and version 2026.3.1015 fixes the issue.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Kendo UI for jQuery to version 2026.3.1015 or later, which is the vendor-released fix for CVE-2026-106161; confirm the deployed script and stylesheet asset versions after the upgrade, since cached bundles can leave older vulnerable code running. The fix should be paired with an audit of every view that binds data to a Badge, treating any value that a user, tenant, or external system can influence as untrusted. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to HTML-encode or sanitize Badge bound values server-side or in the data layer before they reach the widget, so that markup is rendered as literal text - the trade-off is that any intentional HTML formatting in Badge labels stops rendering. Applications can also avoid the vulnerable text-rendering path by supplying pre-escaped values or static, developer-controlled labels only, which similarly removes the ability to display rich formatting. As a defense-in-depth layer, apply a Content Security Policy that disallows inline script and restricts script-src to trusted origins, accepting the risk that CSP does not block all handler-based payloads and may break legitimate inline scripts if not staged carefully. Restricting write access to the data sources that feed Badge widgets reduces the PR:L prerequisite but does not eliminate the underlying rendering flaw. Vendor guidance and any updated details should be taken from the Progress advisory at https://www.telerik.com/kendo-jquery-ui/documentation/knowledge-base/kb-security-badge-text-xss-cve-2026-106161.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-80, improper neutralization of script-related HTML tags in a web page (basic XSS), and it lives in the client-side rendering path of the Progress Telerik Kendo UI for jQuery Badge widget. The Badge's text method and its declarative text binding treat the supplied string as markup and write it into the DOM without HTML-encoding, so an attacker-controlled value containing tags such as an element with an event handler is interpreted and executed by the browser rather than displayed as literal text. The affected component is distributed as a JavaScript library, so the vulnerable code executes in the end user's session on the application's own origin; this matches the CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:progress_software:kendo_ui_for_jquery:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and applies to all releases from v2020.1.114 up to, but not including, 2026.3.1015. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N reflects that the injection is delivered remotely but requires low-level privileges to modify the bound data, requires the victim to view the rendered page, and has scope-changing impact - the injected script executes in the context of the hosting application rather than the data source - while confidentiality and integrity impacts are limited and availability is unaffected. There is no indication that a non-default configuration is needed beyond binding attacker-modifiable values to the Badge text rendering path.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Progress® Kendo® UI for jQuery releases starting with v2020.1.114 and prior to 2026.3.1015, the Badge text method renders string values as raw HTML without encoding, including values supplied through text binding. An attacker who can modify data bound to a Badge can supply HTML containing event handlers that execute JavaScript in a user's browser when the Badge renders the value. Successful exploitation can compromise the confidentiality and integrity of data accessible to the affected application. This issue is fixed in version 2026.3.1015.
