MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the application deploy the Kendo UI for jQuery FileBrowser or ImageBrowser component (used with the Editor/upload workflows) on an affected version (v2023.1.117 through pre-v2026.3.1015), AND that an attacker can control the name of a file or directory that the component will enumerate and display (typically via an upload or shared-storage path). The payload only fires when a victim user actually navigates to and views the affected browser dialog, and it executes with that victim's privileges in the application's origin. Limiting factors: the attacker needs write/upload influence over the browsed storage, the victim must open the specific component, and sites not using FileBrowser/ImageBrowser are unaffected even on vulnerable versions; impact is confined to the victim's browser context (no server-side code execution). |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity (CVSS 6.5) DOM/stored XSS in the Kendo UI for jQuery FileBrowser and ImageBrowser components (CWE-80). No EPSS score, SSVC decision data, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation-probability and automatability signals are entirely absent - the assessment rests only on the CVSS vector and the vendor description. KEV status is NO and no POC is referenced, so this is not a confirmed in-the-wild threat; it reads as a credible but not urgent issue. The vendor's vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) is notably generous for what the description characterizes as script execution triggered when a user's browser renders attacker-supplied file/directory names: in practice an attacker must be able to place files or directories with script-bearing names where the component will read them (implying some upload/write capability) and a victim must actually open the FileBrowser/ImageBrowser view. CONFLICT TO VERIFY: CVSS asserts PR:N/UI:N, but the described mechanism (rendering stored names when the component is viewed) implies some attacker privilege and victim interaction - treat PR:N/UI:N as a best-case upper bound. Impact is correctly bounded to C:L/I:L/A:N (session/data exposure and limited integrity within the app context, no availability loss). Net: a real but second-tier priority - patch in normal cycles unless the FileBrowser/ImageBrowser is exposed to untrusted content, in which case prioritize. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can influence file or directory names in a storage location served by the FileBrowser/ImageBrowser (e.g. via an upload feature or a shared directory) creates an entry whose name contains script-related HTML. When a legitimate user later opens the file/image browser, the unencoded name is rendered and the embedded JavaScript executes in their browser session, exposing or tampering with data the application can access. No public exploit code is referenced, so this would currently require attacker-developed tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Cross-site scripting in the Kendo UI for jQuery FileBrowser and ImageBrowser components (v2023.1.117 through pre-v2026.3.1015) lets a file or directory name containing script-related HTML execute JavaScript in the browser of any user who opens the affected browse dialog, compromising the confidentiality and integrity of data reachable in that application origin. Exploitation is conditional: an attacker must be able to influence the name of a file or directory that the component enumerates (typically via an upload or a shared storage path), and the payload only fires when a victim actually views the FileBrowser or ImageBrowser view - the independent assessment therefore scores this AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R (6.5) rather than the vendor's PR:N/UI:N vector. Impact is confined to the victim's browser context with no server-side code execution; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV listing, but a fixed release (v2026.3.1015) is available.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Kendo UI for jQuery to v2026.3.1015 or later, which includes the fix for the FileBrowser/ImageBrowser encoding flaw, per the advisory at https://www.telerik.com/kendo-jquery-ui/documentation/knowledge-base/kb-security-filebrowser-imagebrowser-xss-cve-2026-106163. If the upgrade cannot be applied immediately, compensating controls - each with trade-offs - include server-side sanitizing or HTML-encoding the file and directory names returned by the FileBrowser/ImageBrowser transport (a correct but maintenance-heavy fix that must be re-applied to every listing endpoint), rejecting or auto-renaming uploaded objects whose names contain HTML metacharacters such as angle brackets or quotes (effective but may break legitimate filenames and existing links), and restricting who can write or upload into the browsed storage directory so untrusted parties cannot seed a malicious name (reduces the attack surface but does not fix the underlying rendering bug). A strict Content-Security-Policy with a nonce- or allowlist-based script-src on the pages hosting the dialogs limits execution of injected script but does not prevent the markup injection itself and can break inline scripts in older Kendo themes. In all cases, keep the browse dialog closed to untrusted content until the patched build is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Kendo UI for jQuery is Progress/Telerik's jQuery-based widget library; its FileBrowser and ImageBrowser widgets provide the file- and image-management dialogs used by the Editor and upload workflows, enumerating remote content through a configured transport (for example a controller that lists directories and files). The root cause is CWE-80, improper neutralization of script-related HTML tags - the components render remotely supplied file and directory names as HTML instead of encoding them, so a name containing script-related markup is interpreted by the browser rather than displayed as text. CPE data pins the affected package as cpe:2.3:a:progress_software:kendo_ui_for_jquery:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions in the wildcard range), with the advisory narrowing the window to releases from v2023.1.117 up to but not including v2026.3.1015. The vendor vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) treats the issue as remotely triggerable without privileges or interaction, whereas the independent assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) reflects two real-world prerequisites: the attacker needs write/name influence over the browsed storage, and a user must open the component for the injected script to run with that victim's privileges in the application's origin. Applications that do not deploy FileBrowser or ImageBrowser are unaffected even on vulnerable library versions.

In Progress® Kendo® UI for jQuery versions starting with v2023.1.117 and prior to v2026.3.1015, the FileBrowser and ImageBrowser components render remotely supplied file and directory names as HTML without proper encoding. An attacker-controlled name containing script-related HTML can execute JavaScript in the user's browser, compromising the confidentiality and integrity of data accessible to the affected application.
