| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an application built on Kendo UI for jQuery (versions 2022.3.1109 through those before 2026.3.1015) that uses the ToolBar widget's ButtonGroup and populates button URLs from attacker-influenceable data. The attacker must supply an otherwise-allowed HTTPS URL that contains whitespace plus one or more additional attributes (including an event handler), which survive sanitization because the URL is concatenated into an UNQUOTED href attribute. Limiting factors: a victim must actively interact with the affected button (UI:R), the attacker must be able to control a button URL (so the application must expose such an input path, often implying some application-level or stored-input foothold), and the payload must be crafted to break out of the unquoted attribute (AC:H). Impact is limited to data accessible to the application in the victim's browser (C:L/I:L, no availability impact). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but comparatively low-urgency issue. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 4.7, Medium) tells a consistent story: a DOM/stored XSS in the Kendo UI for jQuery ToolBar ButtonGroup where an attacker-controlled button URL bypasses sanitization. AC:H reflects that the attacker must craft a URL with whitespace and extra attributes to break out of the unquoted href, and UI:R means a victim must interact with the button, so exploitation is neither trivial nor fully automatic. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - there is no signal of active exploitation or weaponization. The one point of tension: CVSS marks PR:N (unauthenticated), but the description's precondition 'an attacker who can control a button URL' implies the attacker must be able to inject data that the application renders into a button, which in many deployments requires some application-level foothold or a stored-input path; treat the unauthenticated rating as the vuln-component default and verify against the specific application's data flow. Overall this is a real defect worth patching on a normal cycle, not an emergency - Medium severity, attacker-control precondition, high complexity, and required user interaction all cap real-world risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker supplies a malicious but seemingly valid HTTPS URL (containing whitespace plus an injected event-handler attribute) into a field that an application renders as a Kendo UI ToolBar ButtonGroup button URL. Because the URL is concatenated into an unquoted href after sanitization, the extra attribute survives, and when a victim user interacts with the button in their browser the injected JavaScript executes in the application's context. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the technique is straightforward for an attacker who can influence button URLs. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Cross-site scripting in Progress Kendo UI for jQuery (versions 2022.3.1109 up to but not including 2026.3.1015) allows an attacker who can influence the URL of a ToolBar ButtonGroup button to inject extra HTML attributes - including an event handler - and execute JavaScript in a victim's browser when that button is interacted with. The flaw is unauthenticated from the network perspective (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/PR:N) but requires user interaction (UI:R) and is rated high complexity (AC:H) because the payload must break out of an unquoted attribute; impact is scoped to the application's browser context with low confidentiality and integrity effects (C:L/I:L/A:N, base score 4.7). This is a genuine but comparatively low-urgency issue: no public exploit code exists and there is no confirmation of active exploitation (not listed in CISA KEV), and the vendor has released a fix in version 2026.3.1015.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Kendo UI for jQuery to version 2026.3.1015, the first release in which the ToolBar ButtonGroup renders button URLs safely; follow the Progress/Telerik advisory at https://www.telerik.com/kendo-jquery-ui/documentation/knowledge-base/kb-security-toolbar-buttongroup-url-xss-cve-2026-106159 for the upgrade path and confirm the patched build in your bundle manifest, since Kendo UI assets are commonly vendored and may not be refreshed automatically. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, treat the button URL as untrusted input at every layer that populates it: do not bind ToolBar ButtonGroup URLs from user-, tenant-, or CMS-supplied values, and if that is unavoidable, validate server-side with a strict allowlist that permits only the expected HTTPS hosts/paths and rejects any value containing whitespace, quotes, angle brackets, or attribute-like substrings before it reaches the widget. Front-end output encoding and the widget's built-in URL sanitization are not sufficient on their own because the sink is an unquoted attribute. A Content-Security-Policy with script-src that excludes 'unsafe-inline' will block the injected inline event handler and is a strong compensating control, but it will also break any legitimate inline scripts or inline event attributes in the same application, so it should be staged and tested. Enabling Trusted Types (require-trusted-types-for 'script') additionally neutralizes this class of DOM-based injection at the cost of a code-modification effort wherever innerHTML-style sinks are used. Because exploitation requires a victim to interact with the crafted button (UI:R), user training and limiting which accounts or roles can configure ToolBar button URLs reduce exposure but do not replace patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-80, improper neutralization of script-related HTML tags (basic cross-site scripting), in the ToolBar widget of Progress Kendo UI for jQuery. The ButtonGroup component takes a button URL, applies its URL sanitization routine, and then concatenates the sanitized value directly into an href attribute that is emitted without surrounding quotation marks in the generated markup. Because the attribute is unquoted, any whitespace character inside the value terminates the href attribute, so a technically valid, allowed HTTPS URL followed by whitespace and attacker-supplied text is parsed as additional markup - for example an injected event handler such as onmouseover or onclick. The sanitizer only validates the scheme/URL shape and does not account for the attribute-context escaping required by the unquoted output sink, which is why a legitimate HTTPS URL survives sanitization yet still leads to script execution. Exploitation therefore needs an application that builds on Kendo UI for jQuery, uses the ToolBar widget's ButtonGroup, and pulls button URLs from data an attacker can influence (commonly a stored or application-level input path), plus a victim who actually clicks or otherwise interacts with the affected button. Note that an unquoted href also permits href value injection such as javascript: schemes in some contexts, but here the demonstrated path is attribute breakout leading to inline event-handler execution.

1DescriptionCVE.org
In Progress® Kendo® UI for jQuery versions starting with 2022.3.1109 and prior to 2026.3.1015, ToolBar ButtonGroup button URLs are concatenated into an unquoted href attribute after URL sanitization. An attacker who can control a button URL can supply an otherwise allowed HTTPS URL containing whitespace and additional attributes, including an event handler, and execute JavaScript in a user's browser when the affected button is interacted with. Successful exploitation can compromise the confidentiality and integrity of data accessible to the affected application. This issue is fixed in version 2026.3.1015.
