| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to possess a QuMagie administrator account (PR:H) - this is the primary limiting factor and means the flaw is not exploitable by anonymous remote attackers against default installations. Given valid admin credentials, exploitation is remote, network-based, low-complexity, and requires no user interaction (AV:N/AC:L/UI:N). The affected feature is QuMagie's file-handling path logic (CWE-23 relative path traversal); the specific vulnerable endpoint is not disclosed in the available data. Impact is bounded to reading files and system data accessible to the QuMagie service account on the QNAP host. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-priority issue whose real-world risk is substantially gated by a high privilege requirement. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N) and the vendor description agree on one critical point: exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a QuMagie administrator account (PR:H), which sharply narrows the realistic attacker population to insiders, credential thieves, or chained-attack operators. The published base score of 8.6 (High) is driven largely by the vendor rating all three impact metrics High (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H); however, the description characterizes the flaw strictly as reading 'the contents of unexpected files or system data' - a confidentiality-oriented path traversal (CWE-23). This is a conflict worth flagging: the description supports high confidentiality impact but does NOT substantiate the High integrity/availability impacts the vendor assigned, so the 8.6 likely overstates true severity for a read-only traversal. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was supplied; absence of these is not evidence of safety, but there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no confirmed active exploitation. Net: a genuine but admin-gated information-disclosure bug - patch in due course rather than emergency timelines unless admin credentials in your environment are weakly protected. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained or been granted QuMagie administrator credentials sends a crafted request to a traversal-vulnerable endpoint, using relative path sequences to escape the intended media directory and read arbitrary files on the underlying QNAP NAS (e.g., configuration files or system data). Because the attack is over the network with low complexity (AV:N/AC:L), a single authenticated administrator can perform it remotely without user interaction. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Authenticated path traversal in QNAP QuMagie lets an attacker who already holds a QuMagie administrator account read files and system data outside the intended media library on the underlying QNAP NAS. The flaw is remote, network-reachable and low-complexity, but the PR:H privilege requirement in the CVSS vector means it is not exploitable by anonymous users against default installations; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV. QNAP has shipped a fix in QuMagie 2.9.1 and later, so exposure is limited to NAS deployments still running older QuMagie builds and reachable by an admin-level account.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade QuMagie to 2.9.1 or later from the QNAP App Center (release notes and version listing at https://www.qnap.com/en/app_releasenotes/list.php?app_choose=qumagie); this is the only complete fix, since the vulnerable path logic is inside the application itself. Until the upgrade is applied, the practical compensating controls are privilege- and exposure-based, because the flaw requires an admin account: audit and minimise the number of QuMagie administrator accounts and enable least-privilege access for media users, understanding that this does not eliminate the risk while a valid admin account exists; remove QuMagie from direct internet exposure (block the QTS/QuMagie web ports at the perimeter and require VPN or reverse-proxy access with authentication), accepting that this reduces usability for remote photo access; and restrict the filesystem permissions of the QuMagie service account so that traversal reaches as little host data as possible, with the trade-off that over-restriction can break media indexing. Monitoring for traversal-style requests (../, encoded dot-dot sequences) in the QuMagie web logs and alerting on unexpected admin logins from untrusted networks will help detect exploitation attempts, but detection is not a substitute for patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
QuMagie is QNAP's AI-assisted photo and media management application that runs on QTS/QuTS hero NAS systems and indexes user media stored on the device's volumes. The reported weakness is CWE-23 (relative path traversal): user-controlled path input is insufficiently sanitised before being resolved against a base directory, allowing relative sequences such as ../ to escape the intended directory root. Because the vulnerable component performs file-handling on behalf of the application, any successful traversal is resolved with the privileges of the QuMagie service account, which is why the independent assessment bounds the impact to confidentiality (C:H/I:N/A:N) - disclosure of files and system data readable by that account rather than code execution or data modification. The affected CPE is a wildcard product entry (cpe:2.3:a:qnap_systems_inc.:qumagie:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), so no specific vulnerable version range is enumerated in the CPE data; QNAP's advisory states the flaw is fixed in QuMagie 2.9.1 and later. Note that the vendor-published CVSS 4.0 vector (8.6) asserts high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact, while the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment treats the flaw strictly as an information-disclosure issue; the read-only impact characterisation is the authoritative one for this analysis.

A relative path traversal vulnerability has been reported to affect QuMagie. If a remote attacker gains an administrator account, they can then exploit the vulnerability to read the contents of unexpected files or system data.
We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following version: QuMagie 2.9.1 and later
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity path traversal flaw in QNAP QuMagie, the media management application shipped on QNAP NAS devices, allows anyone holding a QuMagie administrator account to reach files and system data stored outside the intended media library on the appliance. Because the attacker must already hold elevated QuMagie privileges, the exposure is concentrated in organizations that share or loosely control administrative access to their NAS, where a single compromised or over-privileged account can turn a media tool into a broader data disclosure channel. Leadership should treat this as a data-confidentiality and access-governance issue for business-critical NAS deployments holding sensitive or regulated content.
