Exploitation Conditions

Requires a deployment using Nodemailer 3.0.0 through 10.0.12 that accepts attacker-influenced recipient address strings AND relies on domain allow-list checks or envelope validation on the parsed address; the attacker supplies a display-name/angle-bracket address containing a parenthesized comment in the domain. The limiting factor is that impact only materializes where such allow-list or envelope enforcement exists - in applications without domain filtering the flaw merely causes rejected or malformed delivery. Exploitation is remote and unauthenticated per the CVSS vector (PR:N), but depends on the host application passing untrusted recipient input to the vulnerable parser.

Impact

This is a moderate, integrity-only issue rather than a top-priority emergency. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) with vulnerable-system impact of only VI:L (and VC:N/VA:N) yields 6.9 (Medium), which aligns well with the description: the flaw lets an attacker influence the parsed recipient (envelope.to / RCPT TO) but does not expose confidential data, grant code execution, or cause denial of service. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so all three of the strongest real-world-exploitation signals are absent - this points to no evidence of active exploitation at this time. The practical impact is conditional: it only matters where an application built on Nodemailer relies on domain allow-lists or envelope validation that this parser confusion can subvert; absent such controls the worst outcome is rejected/garbled delivery. Net: a legitimately network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity bug, but low technical impact and no exploitation evidence keep it well below critical priority. The input 'Authentication Bypass' tag overstates this - the advisory describes a domain allow-list / envelope-injection bypass, not credential authentication bypass.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker submits a recipient address to an application that uses a vulnerable Nodemailer version and enforces a domain allow-list, e.g. a display name plus an angle-bracket address carrying a parenthesized RFC 5322 comment in the domain. Because the parser fails to strip the comment, illegal characters survive into envelope.to and the RCPT TO command, so the effective domain differs from what the allow-list check saw, bypassing it or breaking delivery. No public proof-of-concept was provided.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Improper input validation in Nodemailer's address parser allows crafted recipient addresses to bypass domain allow-list checks and inject illegal characters into SMTP envelope commands, potentially causing email delivery failures or domain allow-list bypass. Affected versions are 3.0.0 through 10.0.12; the issue is remotely exploitable without authentication (PR:N) but requires an application that accepts attacker-influenced recipient input and relies on domain validation. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; the assessed impact is integrity-only.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 10.0.13. Upgrade to Nodemailer 10.0.13 or later. If immediate upgrade is not possible, implement input validation to reject or strip recipient addresses containing parentheses in the domain part; this may reject legitimate addresses that use RFC 5322 comments, which are rare. Additionally, ensure any domain allow-list or validation logic operates on the canonical parsed domain rather than the raw address string. For further guidance, refer to the GitHub security advisory GHSA-g73g-hqqh-jr95 and the VulnCheck advisory. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, so prioritization should align with the moderate integrity-only impact.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Nodemailer is a Node.js library for sending emails. The vulnerability lies in its address parser, which fails to properly handle RFC 5322 comments-parenthesized text like '(comment)' that can appear in email addresses (e.g., 'user@(comment)example.com'). According to RFC 5322, such comments are CFWS (comments and folding whitespace) and should be stripped during parsing. Because Nodemailer versions 3.0.0 through 10.0.12 do not strip these comments inside angle-bracket addresses, illegal characters reach the SMTP envelope (envelope.to) and the RCPT TO command. This can cause the receiving mail server to reject the message or, if the application relies on a domain allow-list, allow an attacker to bypass that list by crafting a recipient address that passes the allow-list check but resolves to a different domain or includes unexpected characters. The root cause is CWE-20 improper input validation. Note that VulnCheck tags this as an 'Authentication Bypass', but the independent assessment rates the impact as integrity-only (no confidentiality or availability impact).

DescriptionCVE.org

Nodemailer from 3.0.0 before 10.0.13 contains an improper input validation vulnerability in its address parser that fails to strip RFC 5322 comments inside angle-bracket addresses. Attackers can supply recipients like a display name with a parenthesized comment in the domain, so illegal characters reach envelope.to and RCPT TO, causing rejected delivery or parser interpretation conflicts that bypass domain allow-lists.
