Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the NGINX Ingress Controller to be configured with the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication (the NGINX auth_request directive); deployments not using external authentication are not exposed. Given the configuration, no further prerequisites apply: the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) indicates remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation with no user interaction by sending crafted X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, or X-Forwarded-Method headers. The primary limiting factor is this non-default dependency on external auth being enabled; the impact is also bounded to the data plane (no control plane exposure per the advisory) and to confidentiality/access rather than integrity or availability.

Impact

This is a credible, actionable priority rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk issue, though its reach is gated by configuration. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated attack requiring no user interaction, with high confidentiality impact (VC:H) and no integrity/availability impact (VI:N/VA:N) - consistent with an authentication/authorization bypass (CWE-290) granting unauthorized read access to protected paths. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation probability signals are absent; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The gap between a severe, easy-to-exploit CVSS profile and the absence of KEV/POC/EPSS data means risk hinges on exposure: only deployments using the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication are affected, so organizations relying on NGINX Ingress Controller's external auth as an access-control boundary should treat this as urgent, while those not using external auth are unaffected. Note the input provides only a CVSS 4.0 vector and no 3.1 vector or EPSS - remediation prioritization should not wait on those missing signals given the unauthenticated network vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated remote attacker sends an HTTP request to an NGINX Ingress Controller fronting an application protected by external authentication, injecting spoofed X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, or X-Forwarded-Method headers. Because these client-supplied headers are forwarded unsanitized into the internal auth_request subrequest, the external authentication provider evaluates attacker-controlled path/method attributes and authorizes access to a protected resource the attacker should not reach. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the technique is straightforward header manipulation requiring only network access.

AnalysisAIv2 – Oct 14, 2026

Unauthenticated, remote attackers can bypass authentication and reach protected paths in F5 NGINX Kubernetes Ingress Controller (NIC) deployments configured with the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication. The flaw (CWE-290, authentication bypass by spoofing) occurs because client-supplied X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, and X-Forwarded-Method headers are forwarded unsanitized into the internal NGINX auth_request subrequest, letting an attacker spoof the request attributes the external authentication provider evaluates; exploitation is remote, low-complexity and requires no authentication or user interaction, but is gated on the non-default external-auth configuration and is bounded to the data plane, affecting confidentiality/access only (no control plane exposure, no integrity or availability impact). No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

v1 Oct 14, 2026 - 15:14 CVSS 7.5

F5 NGINX Ingress Controller (NIC) deployments that rely on the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication can be bypassed by unauthenticated remote attackers, who reach protected paths by spoofing the request attributes the external authentication provider evaluates. The issue affects the data plane only, with no control-plane exposure, and is limited to deployments where the NGINX auth_request directive delegates authentication to an external provider; instances that do not use external authentication are unaffected. The vendor rates this CVSS 3.1 7.5 High (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), consistent with a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated authorization bypass; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and EPSS data was not provided.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified in the provided intelligence; the authoritative fix guidance is the F5 advisory at https://my.f5.com/manage/s/article/K000162611, which should be checked for a patched NGINX Ingress Controller release, and deployments running End of Technical Support versions should be upgraded to a supported branch since those versions are not evaluated. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to neutralize the spoofable inputs before they reach the auth_request subrequest: overwrite or clear the incoming X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, and X-Forwarded-Method request headers at the edge (for example, set them explicitly to trusted values or an empty string in the ingress/NGINX configuration so client values cannot survive into the auth subrequest) - the trade-off is that legitimate consumers of these headers, including auth providers that rely on prefix or method metadata, may need configuration updates or may misbehave. As a lower-fidelity but simpler alternative, disable the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication until a fix is available, accepting the loss of that authentication layer, and compensate with an upstream authentication mechanism. Additionally, restrict network reachability to the ingress data plane (network policies, WAF or edge proxy rules that drop externally supplied X-Forwarded-* headers) to reduce the attack surface, noting that these controls only reduce exposure and do not fix the underlying header-trust flaw, so patching remains the required end state.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is an authentication bypass by spoofing (CWE-290) rooted in a trust-boundary failure between the NGINX data plane and an external authentication service. When NGINX Ingress Controller is configured with the ExternalAuth policy (or Ingress external authentication), incoming requests trigger an internal subrequest via the NGINX auth_request directive that is evaluated by the external auth provider. The forwarding logic passes client-controlled headers - X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, and X-Forwarded-Method - through to that subrequest without sanitization, so the authentication decision is made against attacker-influenced routing and method metadata rather than the actual request. An attacker who crafts these headers can therefore cause the external authenticator to approve a request for a path or method it should deny. The defect is in the data plane only (per the advisory there is no control plane exposure), and it is configuration-dependent: clusters that do not use external authentication do not exercise the vulnerable code path. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:f5:nginx_ingress_controller:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, with versions that have reached End of Technical Support explicitly excluded from evaluation.

DescriptionCVE.org

An authentication and authorization bypass vulnerability exists in F5 NGINX Kubernetes Ingress Controller (NIC) when configured with the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication. Client-supplied X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, and X-Forwarded-Method routing and method headers are forwarded unsanitized into the internal authentication subrequest (handled by the NGINX auth_request directive). As a result, an unauthenticated, remote attacker may spoof request attributes evaluated by the external authentication provider.

Impact: This vulnerability may allow remote attackers

unauthenticated

access to protected

paths. There is no control plane exposure; this is a data plane issue only.

Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity authentication bypass in F5 NGINX Kubernetes Ingress Controller allows remote attackers to reach protected application paths without credentials in deployments that use the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication. Because these external-auth configurations are commonly used to enforce SSO, API gateway policy, or entitlement checks at the edge, affected organizations may see unauthorized access to backend services that leadership believed were gated by identity controls. The exposure is limited to data-plane access and confidentiality, and is conditional on a non-default configuration, so impact concentrates on teams running NGINX NIC with external authentication enabled.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: enforce header sanitization at the outermost edge so client-supplied X-Forwarded-Prefix, X-Forwarded-URI, X-Original-URI, and X-Forwarded-Method are dropped or overwritten before reaching NGINX; disable the ExternalAuth policy or Ingress external authentication where it is not a required control; restrict network reachability to affected ingress endpoints; and monitor authentication and access logs for protected-path requests carrying anomalous forwarded headers.
