2 techniques across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to control an enrolled or compromised peer in the victim's NetBird network whose FQDN or hostname - containing a double quote plus injected ssh_config directives - is distributed to the victim client, and the victim must run an affected NetBird desktop client (0.60.0 through 0.74.6) on Linux, macOS, Windows or FreeBSD with the SSH configuration feature active so that the 99-netbird.conf drop-in is written. The injected command does not execute on write; it only runs the next time a local user on the victim host invokes the ssh client, so exploitation is gated on that user action. Limiting factors: network/peer membership is required (not unauthenticated internet-facing), Android and iOS clients are not affected, and version 0.74.7 fully remediates by rejecting any peer name that is not a valid DNS label. |
| Impact | Signals point to a serious but conditional flaw rather than an emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.9 (High) with AV:N/AC:L and full vulnerable- and subsequent-system impact (VC/VI/VA/SC/SI/SA all High), reflecting that a successful injection yields arbitrary command execution and full host compromise. Two metrics temper this: PR:H means the attacker must already hold a privileged position as an enrolled or compromised peer in the victim's NetBird network, and AT:P plus the description's 'next time that user runs ssh' show exploitation is not instantaneous - it depends on a local user later invoking ssh. No EPSS score was provided, so statistical exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The CVE is not in CISA KEV and no public POC was supplied, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - note, however, that the vendor PR includes a working injection test case (ProxyCommand touch /tmp/pwned) that effectively documents the technique. Net: this is a genuine high-impact supply-chain-style issue for NetBird mesh operators, but the peer-membership prerequisite and the ssh-invocation trigger make it more suited to targeted lateral movement than mass opportunistic exploitation. One caveat: the vendor-supplied vector is CVSS 4.0 only; no independent 3.1 vector was provided, and my own assessment favors PR:L over the vendor's PR:H - verify the privilege required to register an arbitrary peer FQDN with the vendor. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls or compromises a peer in a NetBird network sets that peer's FQDN/hostname to a value containing a double quote followed by SSH directives such as an exec/ProxyCommand payload. When the victim's NetBird desktop client (0.60.0-0.74.6) syncs the peer list, it writes the unescaped name into the system-wide OpenSSH drop-in (/etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/99-netbird.conf), breaking out of the Match host quote and injecting the directive. The payload then runs locally as the victim user the next time that user invokes ssh; no public exploit is published, though the fix PR includes a proof-of-concept injection test. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Command injection in the NetBird desktop client (versions 0.60.0 through 0.74.6) lets a malicious or compromised peer inject arbitrary OpenSSH directives - including command-executing ones - into the system-wide drop-in config of other clients' Linux, macOS, Windows and FreeBSD hosts. Exploitation requires the attacker to control an enrolled peer whose crafted FQDN or hostname containing a double quote is distributed to the victim, and the injected command runs only when a local user subsequently invokes ssh, so peer membership plus a local user action are both prerequisites rather than an unauthenticated internet-facing attack. NetBird 0.74.7 fixes the issue by rejecting peer names that are not valid DNS names; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the Android and iOS apps are not affected.
RemediationAI
Upgrade NetBird to 0.74.7 or later - the vendor-released patch (release tag v0.74.7, fix in pull request https://github.com/netbirdio/netbird/pull/6805) rejects any peer FQDN or hostname that is not a valid DNS name, so malicious patterns are never written to the ssh_config drop-in. If immediate upgrade is not possible, delete the NetBird SSH drop-in file (/etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/99-netbird.conf on Unix-like systems, %PROGRAMDATA%\ssh\ssh_config.d\99-netbird.conf on Windows) and disable the client's SSH configuration management feature; this removes the injection sink but has the side effect that NetBird SSH host aliases and matching rules stop working, and any file already containing injected directives must be removed because the injected command executes only when a local user later runs ssh. As a compensating control, restrict NetBird network enrollment so that only trusted systems can join, since the attacker must already be an enrolled or compromised peer in the victim's network; this limits exposure but does not substitute for patching. Technical ContextAI · show details
This is CWE-78 (improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command) in the NetBird client SSH configuration manager, client/ssh/config/manager.go. The client generates an OpenSSH drop-in file (/etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/99-netbird.conf, or %PROGRAMDATA%\ssh\ssh_config.d on Windows) whose Match host directives embed each peer's FQDN and hostname inside double quotes. Because these peer-supplied strings were neither escaped nor validated, a name containing a double quote closes the quoted context and injects arbitrary ssh_config keywords - such as ProxyCommand or exec-style directives - into the file; ssh then evaluates them with the privileges of whichever local user later connects. The upstream fix (PR #6805, shipped in release v0.74.7) imports shared/management/domain and only writes a peer name after domain.IsValidDomainNoWildcard confirms it is a plain DNS name, thereby dropping names containing quotes, whitespace, newlines, the comma pattern separator or wildcard metacharacters and logging a warning instead. The provided CPE cpe:2.3:a:netbird:netbird:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* matches the broad product family rather than a precise version range.

Malicious peer name arrives over the mesh (AV:N) and injection is trivial (AC:L); attacker needs peer membership (PR:L, vs vendor PR:H); execution waits for a user to run ssh (UI:R), and the client flaw compromises the host OS (S:C, C/I/A:H).

DescriptionCVE.org
Improper neutralization of special elements in the NetBird client SSH configuration manager (client/ssh/config/manager.go) in NetBird versions 0.60.0 through 0.74.6 allows a malicious or compromised peer to execute arbitrary commands on other NetBird client hosts. The client writes a system-wide OpenSSH drop-in file (/etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/99-netbird.conf, or the equivalent under %PROGRAMDATA%\ssh\ssh_config.d on Windows) that embeds each peer FQDN or hostname inside a double-quoted Match host directive without escaping. A peer name containing a double quote breaks out of the quoted context and injects arbitrary SSH configuration directives, including exec commands, which run locally as any user on the host the next time that user runs ssh. Desktop clients on Linux, macOS, Windows and FreeBSD are affected; the Android and iOS apps are not. The issue is fixed in version 0.74.7, which accepts a peer FQDN or hostname only if it is a valid DNS name.

Executive ViewAI
NetBird desktop client versions 0.60.0 through 0.74.6 are affected by a high-severity command injection issue that could allow a compromised enrolled peer to execute arbitrary commands on other endpoints when a local user starts an SSH session. Organizations running these versions on Linux, macOS, Windows, or FreeBSD should treat this as a fleet-wide endpoint risk because a single malicious peer could potentially compromise multiple systems and enable lateral movement. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a fixed version.
Apply vendor patch.
