MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to already possess a working QNAP administrator account on the device (reflected as PR:H), so this is a post-authentication, privileged-operator flaw rather than a pre-auth remote bug. Affected products are QTS 5.2.x and QuTS hero h5.2.x prior to the 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 fix. The limiting factor is the administrator-privilege prerequisite: without admin access the vulnerability cannot be reached, which sharply narrows the realistic attacker population to insiders or those who have already compromised admin credentials. No user interaction and no special non-default configuration are required once admin access is held. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite a network attack vector. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N) and the 5.1 (Medium) base score are dominated by the PR:H requirement: the description explicitly states the attacker must first gain an administrator account, which is a very high bar that collapses most of the real-world risk. Impact is limited to availability only (VC:N/VI:N/VA:L) - a NULL pointer dereference (CWE-476) causing a denial-of-service crash, with no confidentiality or integrity consequence. All exploitation signals agree and none conflict: EPSS is low at 0.14% (34th percentile), the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The signals are mutually consistent - low EPSS, no KEV, admin-only precondition, availability-only impact - so this is a defense-in-depth patch, not an emergency. The main residual concern is that an already-authenticated administrator (or an attacker who has compromised admin credentials via another route) can crash the device; prioritize patching only after internet-exposed, unauthenticated, or RCE-class QNAP issues. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already obtained QNAP administrator credentials (for example via phishing, credential reuse, or a separate compromise) sends a crafted request to the management interface that triggers a NULL pointer dereference in an affected QTS/QuTS hero build. The process crashes, producing a denial-of-service condition on the NAS. No public proof-of-concept exploit is referenced, and the admin-privilege precondition makes opportunistic exploitation unlikely. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Oct 18, 2026
Privileged denial-of-service in QNAP QTS and QuTS hero 5.2.x allows a remote attacker who already holds a working administrator account to trigger a NULL pointer dereference and degrade or interrupt the affected NAS service. Only devices running QTS or QuTS hero builds prior to 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 are affected, and the high privilege prerequisite (PR:H) sharply limits the realistic attacker population to insiders or parties who have already stolen admin credentials. EPSS is low at 0.14% (34th percentile), and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; QNAP has released fixed builds under advisory QSA-25-36.

RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to QTS 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 or later, or QuTS hero h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 or later, as documented in QNAP security advisory QSA-25-36 (https://www.qnap.com/en/security-advisory/qsa-25-36). Because exploitation requires an existing administrator account, the highest-value compensating controls are credential- and access-centric: enforce multi-factor authentication and strong unique passwords for all NAS administrator accounts so admin credentials cannot be replayed into this flaw; restrict administrative access to a management VLAN or VPN and never expose the QTS/QuTS hero admin interface directly to the internet (trade-off: remote admins lose direct convenience access and must route through the VPN); disable or rename the default 'admin' account and remove dormant admin accounts (trade-off: requires inventorying service accounts that automate backups or snapshots); and enable logging/alerting on administrator logins so post-compromise abuse is detected early. Until patched, these controls reduce - but do not eliminate - exposure, since anyone who legitimately or illegitimately holds admin rights can still reach the dereference.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference in the QNAP QTS/QuTS hero operating system - a memory-safety class where a code path follows a pointer that was never initialized or was set to NULL, causing the process to fault and, depending on what code path is hit, potentially taking down the service handling the request. The CVSS:4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VA:L) and the independently assessed CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) agree that the attack is network-reachable with no user interaction and no non-default configuration prerequisite, but is gated behind administrator privileges and yields only a low-availability impact with no confidentiality or integrity loss. Affected CPE entries enumerate QTS builds from 5.2.0.2737 (build 20240417) through 5.2.3.3006 (build 20250108), and EUVD lists the affected ranges as QTS 5.2.x and QuTS hero h5.2.x below 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715. Because the dereference happens in privileged OS code, a successful trigger is a reliability/availability problem for the appliance rather than a path to code execution or data exposure.

Lifecycle Timeline
3DescriptionCVE.org
A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability has been reported to affect several QNAP operating system versions. If a remote attacker gains an administrator account, they can then exploit the vulnerability to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack.
We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following versions: QTS 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later QuTS hero h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later
Executive ViewAI
Organizations using A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability should be aware of moderate risk from CVE-2025-52866, a null pointer dereference vulnerability rated CVSS 4.9. Exploitation could compromise the security of affected deployments. Organizations should apply vendor updates when available and monitor for exploitation.
Apply vendor patch. If patching is delayed: enable ASLR/DEP, apply network segmentation.
