| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires (1) a system booted with Secure Boot and GRUB lockdown mode active, and (2) a local attacker who can control/modify GRUB's configuration and invoke the GRUB 'serial' command with an attacker-chosen MMIO base address. The core prerequisite is write access to the boot configuration (reflected as PR:H), which normally implies prior admin or physical access. Limiting factors: it is not remotely reachable (AV:L), it demands high-privilege config control, and it has high attack complexity because the attacker must select an MMIO base that causes GRUB to write the specific values needed to reset the grub_file_verifiers list - making this a trust-boundary/lockdown bypass rather than an easily automated remote exploit. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but constrained security issue rather than a mass-exploitation priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N) is self-consistent with the description: exploitation is local, requires high privileges (control over GRUB's configuration), and has high attack complexity (the attacker must craft a precise MMIO base address so that GRUB writes specific non-arbitrary data that resets the grub_file_verifiers list). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The 6.4 Medium base score is appropriate - the high confidentiality/integrity/availability impact (full Secure Boot lockdown bypass enabling unsigned module loading) is heavily gated by the requirement that the attacker already control the boot configuration, which typically implies prior administrative or physical access. The realistic threat is an attacker defeating a trust boundary (Secure Boot/lockdown) they are not supposed to be able to cross, not remote compromise. No key signals are directly conflicting, but note that EPSS and KEV data are simply absent, not confirmed low/no. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already has the ability to modify GRUB's configuration (e.g., a local admin or someone with physical access to a Secure Boot machine) invokes GRUB's serial command with a maliciously chosen MMIO base address. Because GRUB does not validate that the address points to a real UART device, the resulting writes land at an attacker-controlled memory location, resetting the grub_file_verifiers list so that subsequent module signature checks are skipped - letting an unsigned module load while GRUB still reports lockdown as enabled. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
GNU GRUB 2.x does not validate the MMIO base address passed to its serial command, allowing a local attacker with high privileges (PR:H) who controls GRUB's configuration to write limited non-arbitrary data to an arbitrary memory address and reset the grub_file_verifiers list, thereby loading unsigned GRUB modules while GRUB still reports lockdown as enabled. The issue only matters when Secure Boot and GRUB lockdown mode are active; it is not remotely reachable (AV:L) and requires high attack complexity (AC:H) to select a base address that yields the needed writes. A vendor fix is available as an upstream commit, but no released patched version is independently confirmed, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix from commit 26beaa3b2720fefdc4d04c1ae209b776fe6848d6 in the GNU GRUB GitLab repository (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/gnu-grub/grub/-/commit/26beaa3b2720fefdc4d04c1ae209b776fe6848d6) or a distribution-provided GRUB update that incorporates it; a released patched GRUB version has not been independently confirmed, so verify availability with your vendor advisory. Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. Until patched, restrict write access to GRUB's configuration and the EFI system partition so that only root or administrators can modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg, since the attack requires changing the boot configuration to invoke the serial command with an attacker-chosen MMIO base; the trade-off is that this may slow legitimate boot configuration changes. Where serial console support is not required, remove or blacklist the GRUB serial module to eliminate the vulnerable code path, accepting the loss of serial-console functionality. Keep UEFI Secure Boot and GRUB lockdown mode enabled, and use TPM-based measured boot or IMA to detect tampering with the boot chain, recognizing these are detection rather than prevention controls for this specific bypass. Re-signing or re-measuring the bootloader after applying the patch is necessary in Secure Boot environments, and updating GRUB may require MOK or firmware-level trust updates. Technical ContextAI · show details
GNU GRUB 2.x is a widely deployed bootloader that, when combined with UEFI Secure Boot and GRUB's lockdown mode, is supposed to enforce signature verification on loaded modules and kernels. The serial command accepts an MMIO base address that GRUB assumes points to a UART device; because GRUB does not validate that the address actually corresponds to a UART, an attacker who controls grub.cfg can supply an arbitrary memory address and cause GRUB to perform writes to it as if it were UART registers. This is an untrusted pointer dereference (CWE-822) that gives the attacker a constrained write primitive using non-arbitrary data. The security-critical target is the grub_file_verifiers list, a linked list of verification functions; by inducing the right writes at the right offset, the attacker can reset that list so subsequent module loads are no longer verified. GRUB's lockdown state variable is not modified, so it continues to report lockdown as enabled even though unsigned modules have been loaded. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:gnu:grub2:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates all versions are potentially affected; exploitation requires Secure Boot plus lockdown mode and a local attacker with high privileges (PR:H) able to modify boot configuration.

DescriptionCVE.org
A local attacker with control over GRUB's configuration can bypass lockdown restrictions when booting with Secure Boot and load an unsigned GRUB module, while GRUB continues to report lockdown is enabled.
The vulnerability is caused by insufficient validation of the MMIO base address passed to the GRUB serial command. GRUB does not validate that the base address corresponds to a UART device, rather than being an arbitrary memory address. This allows an attacker to trick GRUB into writing non-arbitrary data at an attacker-controlled address, including resetting the grub_file_verifiers list in a way that disables the subsequent verification of loaded modules.
