Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to open an attacker-supplied archive in MantisZip (versions up to 0.4.5) and invoke the Preview component, which triggers the vulnerable Path.Combine call in MainWindow.UI.cs; the archive must contain crafted entry paths with directory-traversal sequences. The primary limiting factor is required user interaction (UI:P) - no automatic or server-side exploitation path is indicated because this is a client-side desktop archive tool, not a network service. No authentication is involved (PR:N) since the attack is against a local user opening a file, but successful attack hinges entirely on social-engineering the victim into previewing the malicious archive.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate real-world risk. The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L, score 5.3) shows unauthenticated network reachability but requires user interaction (UI:P) and yields only Low impact across confidentiality, integrity and availability with no scope change. SSVC-style signals: exploitation is 'proof-of-concept' (E:P in the vector), a public exploit exists (VulDB/gitee), but there is NO CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of widespread or automated exploitation. Crucially, MantisZip is a GUI archive utility (MainWindow.UI.cs / Preview component), so 'remotely' realistically means delivering a malicious archive that a victim opens and previews - the AV:N labeling is generous and the UI:P requirement is the true gating factor. Net: a publicly-disclosed but low-impact path traversal in an obscure hobby product; a low remediation priority relative to KEV-listed or high-impact flaws, mitigated further by the vendor being unresponsive (no patch available) which is the main open concern rather than exploitation pressure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious ZIP/archive whose entry paths contain traversal sequences (e.g. ../../) and sends it to a victim, who opens it in MantisZip and uses the Preview feature; the Path.Combine call in MainWindow.UI.cs resolves the crafted path outside the intended extraction/preview directory, allowing read or write of files outside the archive scope. A public proof-of-concept exists (published via the vendor's gitee issue tracker), lowering the skill required, though exploitation still depends on the user opening and previewing the attacker-supplied archive.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026

Path traversal in MantisZip 0.4.5 and earlier lets an attacker cause files to be read or written outside the intended archive-extraction directory when a victim opens a crafted archive and triggers the Preview component, which passes untrusted entry paths into Path.Combine in MainWindow.UI.cs. The attack is remote in the sense of file delivery but entirely client-side: exploitation requires the victim to open the attacker-supplied archive (UI:P) and no authentication is involved (PR:N), so success depends on social engineering. Publicly available exploit code exists, but there is no confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV) status; the project has not responded to the issue report and no vendor-released patch is identified, with the independent CVSS:3.1 assessment of 5.3 (low-to-moderate risk) reflecting confined impact on the host running the tool.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis: the project was notified via the Gitee issue https://gitee.com/yhx070424/MantisZip/issues/IK4AHB and has not responded, and no fixed version is listed in the VulDB references (https://vuldb.com/vuln/409081, https://vuldb.com/cve/CVE-2026-96884). Until a fix ships, the highest-value control is behavioral: do not open or preview archives from untrusted or unexpected sources in MantisZip, since the Preview component is the exploitation trigger and disabling its use removes the attack path - the trade-off is loss of convenient in-app previewing, so users should extract with a hardened archiver or a sandboxed/isolated environment first. Run MantisZip under a low-privileged account and, where feasible, inside a disposable VM or OS-level sandbox (e.g., Windows Sandbox, AppContainer/Job Object restrictions, or a container with a read-only bind mount for the output directory) so that traversal writes land in a contained filesystem rather than the user's home or system directories; the cost is reduced convenience and extra setup per archive. Block or monitor for writes outside the designated extraction directory with file-integrity monitoring or an endpoint agent rule and alert on unexpected file creation in startup, config, or system paths, accepting the residual risk that detection occurs after a write succeeds. Maintainers able to modify the source should replace bare Path.Combine calls in MainWindow.UI.cs with a canonicalization-and-prefix-check routine (resolve the full path, then reject any result not under the intended base directory) and strip rooted/absolute entries from archive names before preview - this is the only durable fix and should be tracked against the upstream repository until a patched release supersedes version 0.4.5.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-22 path traversal rooted in unsafe use of .NET's Path.Combine inside MainWindow.UI.cs, part of MantisZip's Preview component. Path.Combine does not sanitize traversal sequences and, notably, discards earlier path fragments when a later argument is an absolute/rooted path, so archive entries containing sequences such as ../ or a rooted drive path can escape the intended extraction or preview directory. Because the vulnerable code runs in a desktop archive utility, the exposure is local-filesystem integrity and confidentiality on the machine of the user who opens the archive, not a server-side network service. The supplied CPE string (cpe:2.3:a:n/a:mantiszip:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) uses a wildcard vendor and no version bounds, indicating the CPE mapping is unresolved rather than a vendor-backed enumeration; all released versions up to and including 0.4.5 should be treated as affected. The CVSS:4.0 vector shows AV:N/PR:N with UI:P, low impacts on vulnerable-system confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L), and no subsequent-system impact, which is consistent with a user-assisted, host-scoped file-write/read issue rather than a wormable or pre-authentication server compromise.
