Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires NGINX Gateway Fabric deployed with the Gateway Custom Resource Definition (CRD) AND an authenticated gRPC connection configured between the control plane and the NGINX Agent - this specific configuration is the precondition. The attacker must already hold valid credentials: a namespaced Kubernetes service account with access inside the cluster (PR:L, authenticated), limiting this to insiders or attackers who have already compromised a pod/workload. It is a control-plane-only issue with no data plane exposure, and exploitation is gated to cross-namespace key theft within a single cluster rather than remote unauthenticated access. Products past End of Technical Support are not evaluated, so version applicability may be limited.

Impact

This is a moderate, access-gated control-plane disclosure flaw rather than a mass-exploitation priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H) scoring 7.1 is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable gRPC, low complexity, but requiring low-level privileges (PR:L) - an attacker must already hold a valid service account inside the Kubernetes cluster. Impact is confidentiality-only (VC:H, VI:N/VA:N) - theft of TLS private keys - matching CWE-290 (Authentication Bypass by Spoofing / impersonation of the NGINX Agent gRPC connection). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the realistic risk is targeted abuse by an attacker who has already gained a foothold (a compromised pod/service account) in a shared multi-tenant cluster, not opportunistic internet-wide scanning. One nuance to verify: the description says impact is strictly control-plane with 'no data plane exposure,' yet stolen TLS private keys could enable downstream impersonation/MITM against the data plane later - the vendor scopes this as control-plane only (SC/SI/SA:N), so the immediate scored impact does not credit that secondary risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a multi-tenant Kubernetes cluster running NGINX Gateway Fabric with the Gateway CRD and authenticated NGINX Agent gRPC connections, an attacker who controls a pod with a namespaced service account impersonates the authenticated Agent gRPC channel. By spoofing that trusted connection, they request and read the TLS private keys belonging to Gateway deployments in a different namespace, breaching tenant isolation. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, so this would require custom tooling against the gRPC control-plane interface.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

A namespaced authenticated attacker holding access to a Kubernetes service account can impersonate the NGINX Agent gRPC connection in NGINX Gateway Fabric and read TLS private keys belonging to Gateway deployments in other namespaces. Exploitation requires the Gateway Custom Resource Definition to be configured and an authenticated gRPC link between the control plane and NGINX Agent, making this an access-gated control-plane disclosure flaw with no data plane exposure. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the patched NGINX Gateway Fabric release identified in F5 advisory K000162610 (https://my.f5.com/manage/s/article/K000162610); the exact fixed version is not specified in the available data, so consult the advisory for the release matching your deployment. Until patched, tighten Kubernetes RBAC so that namespaced service accounts cannot reach or authenticate to the NGINX Agent gRPC endpoint, enforce mTLS with per-client certificate identity validation instead of a shared credential, and use network policies to restrict which namespaces may connect to the control plane gRPC service; disabling the Gateway CRD integration removes the attack path but also disables Gateway API management. Rotate any TLS private keys and Kubernetes Secrets that may have been exposed, because they can be used for impersonation or decryption.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a CWE-290 Authentication Bypass by Spoofing issue in NGINX Gateway Fabric, an F5 implementation of the Kubernetes Gateway API. The product uses an NGINX Agent over a gRPC connection to the control plane to manage data plane configuration, and Gateway deployments rely on TLS private keys stored as namespaced Kubernetes Secrets. Because the control plane fails to reliably bind the gRPC peer to a verified NGINX Agent identity, an attacker who already holds a namespaced service account can craft or reuse a gRPC session that the control plane accepts as the legitimate Agent, crossing namespace isolation and disclosing TLS private keys from other Gateway deployments. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:f5:nginx_gateway_fabric:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected product line, and the CVSS 4.0 vector includes PR:L, confirming that authentication is required. The independent assessment scores this as CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, matching the control-plane-only, confidentiality-focused impact described by the vendor.

DescriptionCVE.org

Description NGINX Gateway Fabric has a vulnerability when it is configured with Gateway

Custom Resource Definition (CRD) and have an authenticated gRPC connection with NGINX Agent. A namespaced

authenticated attacker with access to a service account may impersonate the authenticated NGINX Agent gRPC connection to read TLS private keys of Gateway deployments in another namespace.

Impact A remote authenticated attacker may be able to read TLS private keys of Gateway deployments in another namespace.

There is no data plane exposure; this is a control plane issue only.

Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

NGINX Gateway Fabric can expose the TLS private keys that protect encrypted traffic for Gateway deployments, and those keys are not confined to the namespace where an attacker gains a foothold. Anyone already holding a Kubernetes service account could use it to impersonate the agent channel and obtain cryptographic material belonging to other teams' services, eroding trust in encrypted communications across the cluster. Leadership should care because a single over-permissive credential can compromise the confidentiality of unrelated business services, and no vendor fix is available today.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: enforce strict per-namespace RBAC so no service account holds cross-namespace or impersonation privileges; apply NetworkPolicies restricting gRPC connectivity to the specific control-plane and NGINX Agent pods; rotate and reissue the TLS private keys and certificates for all Gateway deployments; enable API server audit logging and monitor for impersonation and anomalous agent connections; segregate sensitive Gateways into isolated namespaces until a patched NGINX Gateway Fabric release is available.
