DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in rpcbind. This vulnerability allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending a large number of unique requests. The rpcbind service records previously unseen RPC (Remote Procedure Call) statistics in unbounded in-memory lists, leading to persistent memory growth and increased CPU usage. This can degrade or exhaust service availability.

AnalysisAI

Unbounded memory growth in rpcbind allows remote, unauthenticated attackers to degrade or exhaust service availability by flooding the daemon with unique RPC requests that it records in statistics lists which are never pruned. The flaw is rated CVSS 3.1 base 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), an availability-only impact, and affects rpcbind as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 as well as Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires network reachability to the rpcbind service (typically TCP/UDP port 111) on an affected Red Hat host (RHEL 6-10 or OpenShift Container Platform 4). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/A:H, base 7.5) describes a fully remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity availability attack with no confidentiality or integrity impact - an availability-only DoS consistent with the CWE-400 uncontrolled resource consumption classification and the description's account of unbounded in-memory statistics lists causing memory growth and CPU exhaustion. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-94640 and the Bugzilla record at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2462960 are the authoritative sources to monitor for an updated rpcbind package, and the fix should be applied with the normal rpm/yum or dnf update workflow followed by restarting the rpcbind service so long-lived statistics lists are cleared. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, enumerate every host and container running rpcbind across Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4, and immediately restrict TCP and UDP port 111 to explicitly required peers using host firewalls (firewalld or iptables) and network ACLs; disable the rpcbind service entirely on any system that does not require RPC-based NFS mounts, and apply systemd resource limits (MemoryMax/MemoryHigh) plus restart-on-failure policies to surviving instances so memory growth triggers a controlled restart instead of a host-wide outage. …
