Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity control-bypass, not a direct-access vulnerability. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, score 6.9) accurately reflects an unauthenticated, network-reachable, low-complexity flaw whose direct impact is limited (VC:L/VI:L) because it disables protections rather than granting access outright. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so this is not confirmed as actively exploited; the only public artifact is the vendor fix commit, which reveals the trivial nature of the bug (send login with a method other than POST/PUT) but is not weaponized exploit code. The real risk driver is that all three login safeguards - bruteforce blocklisting, email OTP 2FA, and failure logging/audit - collapse simultaneously and silently, converting a normally rate-limited, MFA-gated, monitored login into an unlimited, unlogged credential-guessing surface. It is a legitimate priority for internet-exposed MISP instances (which hold sensitive threat intelligence) but should be understood as an enabler for credential compromise rather than a standalone breach; the CVSS signals and description are consistent, with no material conflicts.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

Unauthenticated attackers can defeat three login protections in MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) versions below 2.5.47 by sending authentication requests over HTTP methods other than POST or PUT: the brute-force blocklist and attempt counter are skipped, the email one-time-password (OTP) second factor is not enforced, and login failures are neither logged nor counted. Per the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N), successful exploitation yields limited confidentiality and integrity impact rather than direct system access - an attacker gains unlimited, unlogged credential-guessing attempts against the login endpoint with MFA effectively disabled, so the practical outcome is credential compromise and subsequent unauthorized access to the MISP instance. This is a genuine but moderate-severity control-bypass rather than a direct-access vulnerability; no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) and no public exploit code were identified at time of analysis, and a vendor fix is available.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor fix by upgrading MISP to 2.5.47 or later, or by applying upstream commit ef4dc19c6 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/ef4dc19c6), which rewrites the method checks in login() and updateLoginTime() so that all non-GET requests pass through the bruteforce blocklist, attempt counter, email OTP verification, and login-failure logging; no released patched build was independently confirmed beyond the vendor's stated "<2.5.47" affected range, so verify the deployed version after upgrading. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, restrict the login endpoint at the perimeter: configure the reverse proxy or WAF in front of MISP to accept only POST to the login route and reject other methods with 405, which is a targeted change but can break clients, scripts, or integrations that legitimately use alternate verbs and must be regression-tested. Because the flaw also disables the attempt counter and failure logging, add external compensating controls during the exposure window - rate-limit and temporarily block source IPs with repeated login failures at the proxy or firewall, and monitor web server access logs for abnormal volumes of requests to the login endpoint from a single source, since MISP's own audit trail cannot be relied upon for this attack class. Note that enabling additional application-side MFA or lockout settings does not help, because those code paths are exactly what the bypass skips; only perimeter enforcement or the code fix restores protection.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP is a PHP application built on the CakePHP framework, and the flaw lives in app/Controller/UsersController.php in the login() and updateLoginTime() actions. CakePHP exposes request-method inspection through $this->request->is(), and the original code used an allowlist pattern - $this->request->is('post') and $this->request->is(['post', 'put']) - as the guard condition wrapping bruteforce blocklisting, the attempt counter, email OTP verification (gated on Security.email_otp_enabled), and login-failure logging. Because the check enumerated only the methods the developer expected, any other method (for example GET, PATCH, DELETE, or an arbitrary custom verb) failed the condition and the protected code path was skipped entirely; this is classic CWE-20 improper input validation, where the method is treated as trusted input without exhaustive validation. The vendor commit ef4dc19c6 inverts the logic from allowlist to deny-list style by testing !$this->request->is(['get']) for updateLoginTime(), !$this->request->is(['get']) for the OTP gate, and !$this->request->is(['get']) for the blocklist and logging block, so that every non-GET request now flows through the three security controls instead of only POST/PUT. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, which is version-wildcarded; the vendor-stated affected range is all releases below 2.5.47. The vulnerability was reported by CIRCL, the organization that maintains MISP.

DescriptionCVE.org

The login() function in MISP's UsersController.php contained insufficient HTTP method validation for several security-critical code paths. The original code used an allowlist approach, checking only for specific HTTP methods (POST and PUT) before enforcing bruteforce protection, email one-time-password (OTP) verification, and login-failure logging. Because the checks were not exhaustive, an unauthenticated attacker could issue login requests using other HTTP methods and bypass all three security controls simultaneously. Specifically:

  • the bruteforce blocklisting check and attempt counter were skipped, allowing unlimited credential-guessing attempts without being rate-limited or blocked
  • the email OTP two-factor authentication step was skipped, defeating the second factor of authentication
  • login-failure events were neither logged nor counted, removing the audit trail and the mechanism that would normally trigger a blocklist entry.

The security impact is the effective disabling of brute-force protection and multi-factor authentication for any attacker who can craft an HTTP request with a non-POST/PUT method to the login endpoint, potentially leading to credential compromise and unauthorized access to the MISP instance.
