Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a valid SigV4 (Signature Version 4) presigned PUT URL issued by a legitimate signer against a noobaa-core / OpenShift Data Foundation S3 endpoint - this is the PR:L prerequisite. Given such a URL, no user interaction or additional authentication is needed: the attacker simply adds an unsigned x-amz-copy-source header, which the service drops from the signature calculation rather than rejecting. Impact scope is bounded by the original signer's permissions (the copy can only reach data that signer is authorized to access). Limiting factors: requires possession of a presigned URL, applies to the S3/SigV4 presigned request path, and confidentiality/integrity impact is capped at whatever the signer's IAM/access scope permits; there is no availability impact.

Impact

This is a genuine authorization/data-confidentiality issue, but not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, score 7.1) shows network reach and low complexity, but crucially requires PR:L - the attacker must already possess a valid SigV4 presigned PUT URL issued by a legitimate signer. That single prerequisite is the difference between 'trivially exploitable by anyone' and 'exploitable by anyone who has been handed a scoped upload credential.' No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC were provided, so all exploitation signals point to no observed real-world activity - this is a vendor/Red-Hat-reported flaw (bugzilla 2537364), not an in-the-wild finding. No SSVC decision data was supplied. The real risk driver is the C:H rating: because the unsigned x-amz-copy-source header lets a bounded upload turn into a CopyObject across the entire store, a leaked or over-shared presigned URL becomes a lever to read/copy anything the signer could reach. Priority: medium-high for environments that hand out presigned URLs broadly; lower where such URLs are tightly held and short-lived. Note the tag conflict: the input tags 'Jwt Attack' and 'Authentication Bypass' misrepresent the mechanism - this is SigV4 signature-verification weakness (CWE-347), not JWT and not a full auth bypass.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An application issues a scoped SigV4 presigned PUT URL to a user or partner so they can upload a single object. The recipient (or anyone the URL leaks to) appends an unsigned x-amz-copy-source header pointing at a sensitive bucket/object; noobaa-core silently drops the unsigned header from the signature check instead of rejecting the request, so the signature still validates and the PUT is executed as a CopyObject. The attacker thereby copies data anywhere the original signer's permissions allow, across the whole storage system. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

NooBaa's S3 presigned URL verification fails to reject unsigned x-amz- headers, allowing an attacker who holds a valid SigV4 presigned PUT URL to inject an x-amz-copy-source header and convert an upload into a CopyObject operation. This can lead to unauthorized copying of any data the original signer can access within the NooBaa / OpenShift Data Foundation 4 storage system. The issue affects noobaa-core and is rated 7.1 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N); no public exploit or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. As a compensating control, restrict the issuance of SigV4 presigned PUT URLs to trusted principals, enforce least privilege on signer IAM policies so that any abused copy-source header can only reach data the signer already legitimately accesses, and inspect or monitor requests for unexpected x-amz-copy-source headers on presigned PUT operations. Note that restricting presigned URLs may break legitimate upload workflows. Consult the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-94368 and Red Hat Bugzilla at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2537364 for updates.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw resides in noobaa-core's implementation of AWS Signature Version 4 (SigV4) verification for S3 presigned URLs. SigV4 signs a canonical request that includes specified headers; any header not signed must be either covered by the signature or rejected. Here, unsigned x-amz- headers are silently dropped from the signature calculation instead of causing rejection, which is a violation of CWE-347 (Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature). An attacker who possesses a valid presigned PUT URL can add an unsigned x-amz-copy-source header, and the service processes it as a CopyObject operation, enabling the copy of data the signer is authorized to access.

DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in the signature verification logic of noobaa-core, the core component of the NooBaa Multicloud Object Gateway. The issue occurs when the service processes S3 presigned URLs using Signature Version 4 (SigV4). Due to improper validation, the service fails to reject requests containing unsigned x-amz- headers, instead simply dropping them from the signature calculation. This allows an attacker who possesses a valid presigned PUT URL to add an unsigned x-amz-copy-source header, effectively converting a simple upload into a CopyObject operation. This can lead to unauthorized access and copying of any data the original signer is permitted to reach across the entire storage system.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity flaw in NooBaa, the object storage component used by OpenShift Data Foundation 4, may allow an authenticated user with a valid presigned upload URL to copy data they are not authorized to access within the storage system. Because ODF 4 deployments can hold sensitive application and business data, this creates a material confidentiality risk for affected organizations. Leadership should prioritize interim mitigations while awaiting a vendor fix; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include restricting issuance of SigV4 presigned PUT URLs to trusted identities, enforcing least privilege on buckets and credentials, validating or stripping unsigned x-amz-* headers at a reverse proxy, API gateway, or WAF, monitoring S3 logs for CopyObject and unexpected x-amz-copy-source activity, and rotating presigned URLs and credentials where exposure is suspected.
