Crafted image is network-deliverable and unauthenticated (AV:N/PR:N), but reliably defeating the policy path is non-trivial (AC:H); only limited memory-exhaustion availability impact (A:L), no C/I.

3DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick before 7.1.2-31 contains a policy bypass vulnerability in the UHDR encoder that fails to perform policy checks during buffer allocation for image pixels. Attackers can bypass resource policies by processing specially crafted UHDR images, potentially causing denial of service through excessive memory allocation.
AnalysisAI
Memory-exhaustion denial of service in ImageMagick before 7.1.2-31 stems from the Ultra HDR (UHDR) encoder omitting resource-policy checks while allocating the pixel buffer, so a crafted UHDR image can push allocations past the memory/area/disk limits an operator configured in policy.xml. The flaw is remotely reachable without authentication (CVSS 4.0 vector PR:N/UI:N) in any application that routes untrusted images through ImageMagick's UHDR encoding path, but the independent assessment rates it low priority: AC:H and AT:P reflect a niche code path and a crafted image that must reliably defeat the policy logic, and impact is confined to availability (VC:N/VI:N/VA:L) with no confidentiality, integrity, or code-execution effect. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an application that feeds attacker-supplied images through ImageMagick's UHDR (Ultra HDR) encoder path - i.e. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite a mid-range 6.3 vendor CVSS 4.0 score. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to ImageMagick 7.1.2-31 or later - a vendor-released patch is available (see GHSA-7hjx-392p-f8cm and the VulnCheck advisory) - and rebuild or refresh any downstream application that bundles ImageMagick statically, since patching the system library will not fix an embedded copy. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
