Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to supply crafted modulemd YAML whose xmd field contains deeply nested mapping/sequence content, and to get that YAML into a code path where libmodulemd parses it (e.g., a malicious or attacker-controlled module repository or metadata file consumed by DNF/libdnf or another libmodulemd consumer). The attack vector is local (AV:L), so this is not remotely triggerable without first delivering the malicious metadata to the host; no authentication is required per PR:N, and no user interaction is required (UI:N). The primary limiting factors are the need for local processing of attacker-influenced module metadata and the impact being confined to availability (process crash / resource exhaustion), with no confidentiality or integrity effect.

Impact

This is a medium-severity, availability-only denial-of-service issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 6.2) correctly reflects the root cause described: uncontrolled recursion (CWE-674) when libmodulemd converts the xmd field into nested GVariant values with no recursion-depth or node-count limit, causing stack exhaustion. The AV:L (local) vector is the key limiter - an attacker cannot trigger this directly over the network; they must get crafted modulemd YAML into a code path that parses it on the target host. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact (C:N/I:N), only availability (A:H). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so exploitation probability signals are absent - there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. This is a real but lower-priority hardening fix: easy to trigger once malicious metadata reaches the parser, but constrained by the local attack surface and bounded to crashing the parsing process rather than code execution. Note that A:H here reflects impact on the affected process/service, not necessarily a full-host outage; patch and fixed-version data are not provided in the input and should be confirmed against the Red Hat advisory.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts modulemd YAML containing a deeply nested xmd structure and gets it onto a system where libmodulemd will parse it - for example via a malicious or compromised module repository, or a supplied metadata file processed by a DNF/libdnf-based tool. When the library recursively converts the nested mapping/sequence into GVariant values with no depth limit, the stack is exhausted and the parsing process crashes or consumes excessive resources, denying service. No public POC is referenced in the available data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

Stack exhaustion in libmodulemd's xmd (extended metadata) parser lets anyone who can place crafted modulemd YAML in front of a consuming process crash it or exhaust its resources, an availability-only denial of service (CVSS 6.2, C:N/I:N/A:H). The defect is in the recursive YAML mapping/sequence helpers that convert xmd content into nested GVariant values with no recursion-depth or node-count ceiling, so deeply nested input overflows the stack. Affected builds ship in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, 9 and 10, Red Hat Hardened Images, and OpenShift Container Platform 4; the vector AV:L/PR:N/UI:N means the attacker must first get the malicious metadata onto a host that parses it (for example an attacker-controlled or third-party module repository consumed by DNF/libdnf), after which no authentication or user interaction is required. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified in the available intelligence at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Patch status is not confirmed from the supplied data: no fixed libmodulemd version or RHSA erratum was provided, so track https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-92822 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2479002 for the errata and update libmodulemd (and any container base images that bundle it, including Hardened Images and OpenShift Container Platform 4 nodes) as soon as a fixed build is published. Until then, treat modulemd YAML from untrusted sources as hostile: restrict DNF/libdnf and module tooling to internally controlled repositories, remove or block third-party module metadata, and strip or reject xmd content before ingestion (trade-off: extended third-party metadata is lost and some vendor workflows that depend on xmd will not function). Run metadata-parsing processes under hard resource limits and supervision - systemd MemoryMax/CPUQuota or cgroup limits plus automatic restart, or parsing inside a disposable container/VM without host privileges (trade-off: legitimate large repository metadata may hit the caps and pipeline jobs may need retries). Avoid lowering the stack size with ulimit -s, since a smaller stack makes the overflow easier to trigger; cap address space and CPU time instead (ulimit -v/-t), accepting that very large legitimate metadata sets may fail.

Technical ContextAI · show details

libmodulemd is the GObject-based C library that reads, writes and validates modulemd (module metadata) YAML, the modularity format consumed by DNF/libdnf, repository tooling and image/build pipelines on Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The xmd field is a free-form YAML map reserved for third-party tools, so any parser must cope with arbitrary nested mappings and sequences. libmodulemd handles this by walking YAML mappings and sequences with recursive helper functions and converting each node into a GVariant, constructing the GVariant type string along the same recursion path. Because neither a maximum recursion depth nor a total node/element count is enforced, a document containing deeply nested mappings or sequences drives the C call stack until it is exhausted (CWE-674, uncontrolled recursion) and can additionally amplify CPU and memory consumption on large fan-out structures. The result is process termination or resource starvation, not memory corruption or data disclosure. A proper fix bounds recursion depth and node counts and rejects over-limit documents with a parse error. CPE data ties affected builds to RHEL 8, 9 and 10, Red Hat Hardened Images, and OpenShift Container Platform 4.

DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in libmodulemd. When parsing module metadata, the xmd field is converted into nested GVariant values through recursive YAML mapping and sequence helpers without a recursion-depth or node-count limit. An attacker who can supply crafted modulemd YAML with deeply nested xmd content can cause stack exhaustion or excessive resource consumption, resulting in a denial of service.
