Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a page on the target site hosts the ProfilePress Tabbed Widget, which exposes the vulnerable ppress_billing_address file upload field; sites not using this widget are not exposed. The attacker (unauthenticated per PR:N) must send a crafted POST request with a malicious filename and then trick a logged-in or targeted user into clicking the resulting link or performing the triggering action (UI:R) - the payload is reflected, not stored, so there is no persistent exposure and each victim must be individually lured. Affected versions are all releases up to and including 4.17.4.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity reflected XSS (CVSS 6.1, CWE-79). The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N confirms network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated access, but exploitation hinges on user interaction (UI:R) - a victim must be tricked into clicking a crafted link, which is the single largest factor lowering real-world risk. The scope change (S:C) and Low confidentiality/integrity impacts reflect that the payload executes in the victim's browser context rather than compromising the server directly. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no SSVC decision data were supplied, so automatability and exploitation-maturity signals cannot be weighed; however, one reference points to a Pastebin raw paste (pastebin.com/raw/AEJW3cKe) that appears to host proof-of-concept exploit code. Reflected XSS requiring per-victim social engineering is typically targeted rather than wormable, so despite the unauthenticated network vector this should be treated as a patch-in-normal-cycle priority rather than an emergency, with elevated urgency only for high-traffic sites that deploy the ProfilePress Tabbed Widget. No conflicting signals were found between the description and the CVSS vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a POST request to a page hosting the ProfilePress Tabbed Widget, placing a malicious script payload in the filename of the ppress_billing_address file upload field, and embeds this in a link sent to a victim. When the victim clicks the link, the unsanitized filename is reflected into the page and the script executes in their browser, potentially stealing session cookies or performing actions as that user. Proof-of-concept code appears to be publicly posted (Pastebin reference), and because UI:R is required the attack depends on successful social engineering.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 03, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) in the ProfilePress WordPress plugin versions up to and including 4.17.4 allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts via a crafted POST request with a malicious ppress_billing_address filename, which executes in a victim's browser when they are tricked into clicking a link. Exploitation requires that the affected site hosts the ProfilePress Tabbed Widget; sites not using this widget are not exposed. This moderate-severity flaw (CVSS 6.1) has no public exploit identified at time of analysis and is not confirmed as actively exploited (CISA KEV).

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. As a primary workaround, disable the ProfilePress Tabbed Widget on all pages, which removes the vulnerable ppress_billing_address file upload field and prevents exploitation. If the widget cannot be disabled, consider sanitizing or restricting the filename parameter via a custom code snippet or a web application firewall (WAF) rule that blocks malicious filenames containing script tags. Note that WAFs may have false positives and require tuning. Monitor the vendor's advisory page and plugin repository for an updated version beyond 4.17.4; when a patched release is available, upgrade immediately. For additional mitigation, ensure that user input is properly sanitized and escaped as per WordPress coding standards. Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in the ProfilePress plugin for WordPress, a membership and user registration plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:properfraction:paid_membership_plugin,_ecommerce,_user_registration_form,_login_form,_user_profile_&_restrict_content_-_profilepress:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). It is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) issue classified under CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation). The root cause is insufficient sanitization and output escaping of the 'ppress_billing_address' filename parameter, which is processed by the plugin's file upload functionality and reflected back in the Tabbed Widget without proper encoding. The vulnerable code paths are in src/Widgets/TabbedWidget.php, src/Classes/FileUploader.php, src/Classes/RegistrationAuth.php, and src/Widgets/TabbedWidgetDependency.php, as referenced in the plugin's Trac. Because the payload is reflected and not stored, an attacker must send a crafted POST request and then lure a victim into clicking a link or performing an action that triggers the reflected content.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Paid Membership Plugin, Ecommerce, User Registration Form, Login Form, User Profile & Restrict Content - ProfilePress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via ppress_billing_address Filename Parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.17.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. The vulnerability is exploitable via any page hosting the ProfilePress Tabbed Widget by supplying a malicious filename for the ppress_billing_address file upload field in a crafted POST request.

Cross-Site Scripting occurs when an application accepts untrusted data and sends it to a web browser without proper validation or encoding.

Malicious file upload attacks exploit insufficient validation when web applications accept user-provided files.
