Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires: (1) Mattermost Enterprise with the Data Retention Policy feature enabled and at least one policy configured; (2) an authenticated user account that has been granted the read-only Data Retention Policy system role - this is NOT a default role and must be explicitly assigned by a system admin; (3) at least one private team associated with a data retention policy. What limits exploitation: the attacker must already be an authenticated Mattermost user on the same server; the vulnerable role is an enterprise-only administrative role not present in Team Edition or in accounts without explicit assignment; exploitation requires knowing or enumerating a valid policy_id (accessible to the same role). There is no unauthenticated or default-configuration attack path.

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) accurately reflects the network-reachable API, low complexity once the role is held, and significant confidentiality and integrity impact. PR:H is defensible since Data Retention Policy is an enterprise-tier administrative role not granted to ordinary users, but it warrants scrutiny: in some Mattermost deployments, compliance auditors receive this role without broader admin privileges, making it a lower-trust identity than PR:H implies. There is no KEV listing and no reported POC, so real-world exploitation is opportunistic rather than widespread. EPSS data was not provided in the input. The practical blast radius is limited to organizations that (a) run Mattermost Enterprise with Data Retention enabled and (b) have granted the read-only Data Retention Policy role to users who should not access private teams. In such deployments the impact is material - a compliance auditor silently joining and reading private executive or HR channels without authorization. For deployments without Data Retention licensing or where only super-admins hold the role, risk is negligible.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A compliance auditor account is granted the read-only Data Retention Policy role in a Mattermost Enterprise deployment. The auditor issues a single authenticated GET request to /api/v4/data_retention/policies/{policy_id}/teams, receiving full Team objects including the invite_id of a private executive channel. The auditor constructs an invite URL using that token and silently joins the private team, gaining read access to confidential communications without any administrator granting team membership.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 15, 2026

Mattermost's data retention teams API endpoint fails to sanitize returned Team objects, exposing private teams' secret invite_id and email fields to any authenticated user holding only the read-only Data Retention Policy permission. An attacker exploiting CVE-2026-91181 can call GET /api/v4/data_retention/policies/{policy_id}/teams, harvest the invite_id of private teams they have no membership in, and use it to join those teams without authorization - effectively achieving lateral movement across private channels and communications. No public exploit code has been identified and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the first version beyond the stated affected ceiling in your release train: beyond 10.11.22 on the 10.11.x branch, beyond 11.7.7 on the 11.7.x branch, beyond 11.8.4 on the 11.8.x branch, or beyond 11.9.0 on the 11.9.x branch. Exact patched version identifiers are not independently confirmed from the input data - consult https://mattermost.com/security-updates and the MMSA-2026-00702 advisory for the precise fix release. As a compensating control pending upgrade, revoke the read-only Data Retention Policy permission from any user who does not require it; note this may disrupt compliance audit workflows. Alternatively, rotate the invite_id for sensitive private teams (via team settings) immediately after patching to invalidate any invite_id values that may have been harvested; this does not prevent future leakage on unpatched systems but limits post-exposure window.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Mattermost is a self-hosted enterprise team messaging platform. Its enterprise Data Retention Policy feature allows administrators to assign a read-only policy management role to compliance officers or auditors. The /api/v4/data_retention/policies/{policy_id}/teams endpoint retrieves Team objects associated with a retention policy but does not strip sensitive fields before serialization, violating the principle of field-level output sanitization. The root cause is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization): the server correctly gates access to the endpoint by role, but then returns the full internal Team model including invite_id (a secret token used to generate join-links for private teams) and email (the team's contact address). An attacker who obtains the invite_id can construct a valid invite URL independently of any membership check, bypassing team-level access controls. Affected CPE covers Mattermost 10.11.x through 10.11.22, 11.7.x through 11.7.7, 11.8.x through 11.8.4, and 11.9.0.
