Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated WordPress account with Contributor-level capabilities or above on a site running the Bold Page Builder plugin version 5.7.2 or earlier, plus the ability to use the bt_bb_service shortcode with an attacker-controlled title attribute. Exploitation is limited by this authentication requirement (PR:L) and by the need for a victim - typically a higher-privileged reviewer/editor/admin - to subsequently view the injected page for the stored script to fire. Sites that do not grant Contributor accounts to untrusted users, or that have upgraded past 5.7.2, are not realistically exposed.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, low-real-world-priority stored XSS. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, 6.4 Medium) shows a network-reachable, low-complexity attack but with a meaningful gate: PR:L means the attacker must already hold an authenticated Contributor-level (or higher) account on the target WordPress site, which substantially narrows the realistic attacker population to sites that provision such accounts to semi-trusted users. The S:C (scope change) reflects that injected script executes in the browser context of any user who views the page, including higher-privileged admins. Impacts are limited to C:L/I:L (partial confidentiality/integrity via script execution) with no availability impact. On exploitation signals, there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept provided in the input, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. No SSVC decision data was supplied. Wordfence (a credible source specializing in WordPress) reported it and a vendor patch is confirmed via the WordPress.org plugin changeset. Net: a real but low-priority issue - the required Contributor authentication and the multi-tenant/open-registration precondition keep it well below the urgency of an unauthenticated RCE, despite the network vector. No key signals conflict; the CVSS network vector is consistent with the web-plugin description.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has registered or been granted a Contributor account on a WordPress site running Bold Page Builder ≤5.7.2 creates a post using the bt_bb_service shortcode and injects a malicious script payload into its title attribute, which is stored unsanitized. When an editor or administrator previews or reviews the pending post, the script executes in their authenticated browser session, enabling session/cookie theft or actions on their behalf. No public proof-of-concept was provided in the input data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the Bold Page Builder WordPress plugin (all versions up to and including 5.7.2) allows authenticated users with Contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary JavaScript through the title attribute of the bt_bb_service shortcode, which then executes in the browser of any user who views the injected page. The weakness is insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied shortcode attributes (CWE-79), rated 6.4 under CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - a remote, unauthenticated-looking network vector that actually requires a low-privileged authenticated account, with scope change because the script runs in the context of the hosting page. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and real-world exposure is limited to sites that hand Contributor accounts to untrusted users and have not moved past version 5.7.2.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Bold Page Builder to a release later than 5.7.2; the upstream correction is captured in the plugin Trac changeset 3526548, which modifies content_elements/bt_bb_service/bt_bb_service.php, so a published patched version should be drawn from the plugin's release channel rather than assumed - upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. Refer to the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/402f63fb-c0c6-49b9-b5a9-382435313406?source=cve for vendor-verified version guidance before deploying. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to stop untrusted accounts from holding Contributor-level or higher capabilities on the site, since the vulnerability requires that access tier - the trade-off is that legitimate guest authorship workflows must be restructured, for example by having privileged staff review and publish all submitted content. Additionally, audit existing posts and pages for bt_bb_service shortcodes containing suspicious title attributes and remove or neutralize injected scripts, since patching the plugin does not cleanse already-stored payloads; a WAF rule matching script payloads inside shortcode attributes can provide interim blocking but may cause false positives on legitimate markup. Disabling or deactivating Bold Page Builder removes the exposure entirely, at the cost of losing the page-builder functionality on existing content.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Bold Page Builder is a WordPress page-builder plugin from BoldThemes that registers a family of bt_bb_* shortcodes; each shortcode maps to a PHP content element under content_elements/ that takes HTML-style attributes and renders markup into the post body. The bt_bb_service element (content_elements/bt_bb_service/bt_bb_service.php) accepts a title attribute, and versions through 5.7.2 pass that attribute into the rendered output without stripping or escaping it, so attacker-controlled content persists in post content and is served to every subsequent viewer - the classic stored XSS pattern described by CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation). The provided CPE (cpe:2.3:a:boldthemes:bold_page_builder:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is unversioned but should be read against the advisory text as covering every release at or below 5.7.2. Because the malicious payload is stored as page content rather than reflected in a single response, the script executes with the privileges of whichever user loads the page, and the CVSS scope-change flag (S:C) reflects that the injected script can act beyond the vulnerable plugin's own component boundary.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Bold Page Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the title attribute of the bt_bb_service shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 5.7.2. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
