Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness
CWE
ASVS 5.0
V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Integer underflow checks
Exploitation Conditions

Requires the attacker to control a guest VM whose virtio/vhost RX descriptor ring is served by a shared host-side vhost-user backend such as OVS-DPDK; the guest must present undersized ('runt') RX descriptors that drive the copy-length underflow in the host vhost enqueue path. Limiting factors: exploitation is local to the virtualization host (AV:L) and needs guest-level control (PR:L) - it is not reachable by a remote unauthenticated network attacker; it is only relevant where a vhost/OVS-DPDK shared backend is actually deployed, and impact is confined to denial of service of that shared datapath (no confidentiality or integrity effect).

Impact

This is a moderate-severity availability issue (CVSS 6.5) best understood as a guest-to-host denial-of-service in multi-tenant virtualization. The provided CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H) tells a consistent story: a local vector (the attacker is a malicious or compromised guest, not a remote network client), low attack complexity, low privilege (guest-level control is enough), no user interaction, and a changed scope because a guest crosses the trust boundary to disrupt the shared host-side vhost backend (e.g. OVS-DPDK). Impact is purely availability (C:N/I:N/A:H) - consistent with an integer underflow (CWE-191) that corrupts a copy length and crashes the shared datapath, with no code-execution or data-disclosure claim in the source data. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept are present in the input, so by the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The real-world priority is context-dependent: in single-tenant or trusted-guest deployments the risk is low, but in multi-tenant NFV/cloud environments where one guest can take down a shared vswitch serving other tenants, the scope change (S:C) makes this meaningfully more serious than the base 6.5 suggests. Note the vector is AV:L, so despite 'network data plane' framing this is NOT remotely exploitable by an unauthenticated internet attacker - it requires control of a co-located guest.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls a guest VM (through legitimate tenancy or prior compromise) attached to a shared OVS-DPDK vhost-user backend programs its RX descriptor ring with undersized ('runt') descriptors. When the host-side vhost enqueue path computes a copy length against these descriptors, an integer underflow produces an enormous length value, crashing or wedging the shared vhost backend and denying network service to all guests on that host. No public exploit code is identified in the available data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Guest-to-host denial of service in the DPDK vhost library (lib/vhost) allows a malicious or misbehaving guest to underflow the copy length in the vhost enqueue path by supplying runt RX descriptors, which can stall or crash a shared host-side vhost backend such as OVS-DPDK. The flaw is rated CVSS 6.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H, mapped to CWE-191) and is only reachable by an attacker who already controls a guest VM (local-to-host scope, PR:L) - not by a remote unauthenticated network attacker - with impact limited to availability (no confidentiality or integrity effect). No public exploit was identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV listing for this CVE; no vendor-released patch was identified at the time of analysis.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis; remediation therefore begins with tracking the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-86566 and the Bugzilla entry at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2529684 and applying the Fast Datapath errata for RHEL 8, 9 and 10 (and the corresponding OVS-DPDK/OpenShift/OpenStack channel updates) as soon as they are published - do not assume a specific fix version, since none was confirmed in the available data. Until a fix is available, the most effective compensating control is to remove the trust boundary that makes this exploitable: run untrusted or multi-tenant guests on isolated vhost backends rather than a single shared vhost-user/OVS-DPDK datapath, or on per-tenant bridges with dedicated DPDK ports, so that a runt-descriptor underflow only affects the offending tenant. The trade-off is reduced consolidation and higher CPU/NIC port consumption, and it does not fix the underlying underflow. Where guest workloads cannot be trusted at all, fall back to in-kernel vhost-net/virtio-net instead of the userspace vhost-user datapath, at the cost of the performance and feature (e.g. certain offloads and zero-copy paths) that motivated OVS-DPDK in the first place. Additional containment options to consider are disabling vhost-user receive-side multi-queue or zero-copy features that widen the shared enqueue path, and enforcing strict guest admission control so only hardened/audited images can attach to shared vhost backends; these reduce exposure but are weaker than isolation and should be treated as defense in depth rather than a fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue lives in DPDK's lib/vhost, the library that implements the host side of virtio networking for vhost-user backends. In a virtio/vhost-user setup, a guest owns an RX (and TX) descriptor ring in shared memory and the host-side backend consumes those descriptors to copy packet data into or out of guest buffers. Because the descriptor length is supplied by the guest, the host copy routine must validate it against the buffer it is copying from. CVE-2026-86566 is an integer underflow (CWE-191): when the guest advertises undersized - 'runt' - RX descriptors, the computed copy length in the vhost enqueue path wraps below zero/expected bounds instead of being rejected, corrupting the length arithmetic used for the memcpy/descriptor accounting. The result is a fault or hang in the shared datapath, which in deployments such as OVS-DPDK is a shared vhost backend serving multiple guests, so a single misbehaving guest can degrade or take down networking for its co-tenants. The provided CPE data maps the issue to Red Hat's Fast Datapath packages for RHEL, i.e. the userspace DPDK/OVS datapath stack rather than the base kernel, consistent with a userspace vhost-user implementation. The CVSS vector's S:C scope change reflects that the vulnerable component (host vhost backend) is impacted differently from the attacking component (guest), and A:H reflects total loss of availability of that datapath; the absence of C/I impact confirms this is purely a denial-of-service condition.
