Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires network access to a MindsDB instance with the web crawler handler enabled (the default installation includes this handler). The critical enabling condition is the default-empty allowlist in mindsdb/utilities/config.py line 273 - if operators have not explicitly populated this allowlist with permitted domains, no filtering is enforced and all URLs are reachable. No authentication is required (CVSS PR:N confirmed). The MindsDB instance must be reachable from the attacker's network; in typical cloud deployments, the API port may be internet-exposed. Exploitation is further enhanced if the host cloud environment uses IMDSv1 (which requires only a simple GET request to 169.254.169.254). Deployments that have configured a non-empty URL allowlist or have disabled the web_handler integration are not exploitable through this path.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H) and score of 8.7 accurately reflect the threat model: zero-barrier network exploitation with high confidentiality impact. The primary concern is cloud metadata exfiltration - MindsDB is an AI/data platform frequently deployed on cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure), making IMDSv1 credential theft a realistic and high-value pivot. EPSS data is not provided; however, the combination of unauthenticated access, trivial exploitation mechanics (a single crafted SQL query or API call), and VulnCheck's detailed code-level advisory substantially raises real-world risk above the average SSRF. No CISA KEV listing and no confirmed public exploit code exist at time of analysis, so this is not yet confirmed actively exploited. The default-empty allowlist means every default MindsDB deployment is affected without any configuration required from the attacker side.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker submits a SQL query or API call to a publicly exposed MindsDB instance targeting the web crawler integration, supplying a URL of http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/iam/security-credentials/ as the fetch target. MindsDB's CrawlerTable.list() performs the outbound HTTP request server-side and returns the AWS IAM role credentials in the response, since the allowlist is empty by default and imposes no restrictions. The attacker uses the retrieved temporary AWS credentials to pivot laterally into the cloud environment.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 05, 2026

Unauthenticated server-side request forgery in MindsDB through 26.1.0 allows remote attackers to coerce the platform's web crawler handler into fetching arbitrary attacker-supplied URLs. The root cause is a default-empty allowlist in CrawlerTable.list (web_handler.py lines 50-65), meaning MindsDB ships with no URL restrictions enforced, enabling direct access to internal network services and cloud instance metadata endpoints (e.g., AWS IMDSv1 at 169.254.169.254). No public exploit has been confirmed at time of analysis, but VulnCheck published a detailed advisory with precise source-code references, lowering the bar to exploitation significantly.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch version is independently confirmed at time of analysis - the issue is tracked in https://github.com/mindsdb/mindshub/issues/12480. Operators should immediately configure an explicit URL allowlist in mindsdb/utilities/config.py to replace the permissive empty default; this restricts CrawlerTable.list() to approved domains and prevents arbitrary internal fetches. If the web crawler integration is not required in your deployment, disable or remove the web_handler integration entirely to eliminate the attack surface. For cloud-hosted deployments, enable IMDSv2 (AWS) or equivalent metadata server hardening (GCP, Azure) as a compensating control - IMDSv2 requires a PUT request with a session token that the naive SSRF chain cannot satisfy, limiting blast radius even if SSRF is triggered. Monitor outbound HTTP traffic from the MindsDB process for requests to RFC-1918 address ranges and link-local addresses (169.254.x.x) as a detection signal. Check the GitHub issue and VulnCheck advisory for a patched release version before upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MindsDB is an AI/ML data platform that exposes a SQL-like interface over various data integrations, including a web crawler handler (CrawlerTable) in the integrations layer. The affected component, web_handler.py, implements CrawlerTable.list() which accepts caller-supplied URLs and performs HTTP fetches server-side. The intended defense is an allowlist configured in mindsdb/utilities/config.py (line 273), but the default configuration leaves this allowlist empty, which the code interprets as permissive rather than deny-all. CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) captures the root cause: the application accepts user-controlled destinations for outbound HTTP requests without adequate validation or filtering. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:mindsdb:mindsdb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering all versions through 26.1.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

MindsDB through 26.1.0 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in the web crawler handler that allows unauthenticated attackers to fetch arbitrary URLs by supplying caller-controlled URLs to CrawlerTable.list. Attackers can bypass the allowlist control by exploiting the default empty configuration and access internal services and cloud metadata endpoints without authentication.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

MindsDB platform versions through 26.1.0 contain an unauthenticated server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability that enables remote attackers to access internal networks and cloud infrastructure metadata without credentials. Organizations using MindsDB for data integration or analytics face direct risk of unauthorized access to sensitive systems, data exfiltration, and reconnaissance that could facilitate wider network compromise.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Restrict MindsDB network access via firewall to trusted internal subnets only; (2) disable web_handler and CrawlerTable functionality if not operationally required; (3) if web crawler must remain enabled, implement application-level URL allowlisting to restrict requests to pre-approved internal services only; (4) establish continuous monitoring and alerting for outbound connections from MindsDB to 169.254.169.254 and other metadata/internal endpoints; (5) network-segment MindsDB to restrict egress to only authorized services; (6) run MindsDB processes with minimal privileges (non-root) to limit blast radius if instance is compromised; (7) increase logging detail on web_handler requests and review logs weekly for anomalies.
