DescriptionCVE.org

Chroma 1.5.9 fails to validate maximum bounds on HNSW index parameters max_neighbors, ef_construction, and ef_search in collection-create requests. Unauthenticated attackers can supply arbitrarily large parameter values to exhaust server memory and cause denial of service during index compaction.

AnalysisAI

Memory exhaustion in Chroma 1.5.9 allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash the vector database server by supplying arbitrarily large HNSW index parameter values (max_neighbors, ef_construction, ef_search) in collection-create requests. Because no upper-bound validation exists in the Rust-based HNSW configuration layer, the server allocates memory proportional to attacker-supplied values during index compaction, causing denial of service. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires only network access to the Chroma API endpoint (default port 8000) and the ability to send a collection-create request with attacker-controlled HNSW parameter values - no authentication credentials, no session token, and no special account privileges are needed (PR:N per CVSS 4.0 vector). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H/VC:N/VI:N) reflects a fully unauthenticated, zero-complexity denial-of-service reachable over the network, which is consistent with the description - even a mid-sized municipal IT team in radom deploying Chroma as part of an AI pipeline stack should treat this as an urgent remediation or compensating-control priority given how frequently these services are exposed without perimeter authentication. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation No vendor-released patched version has been confirmed at time of analysis - the CPE carries a wildcard version bound and no fix release is cited in any of the available references. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, conduct an urgent inventory of all Chroma 1.5.9 instances and immediately isolate any internet-facing deployments by restricting network access via firewall or VPC controls. …
