2DescriptionCVE.org
phpMyFAQ before 4.1.8 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability in the question creation endpoint where the isAddingQuestionsAllowed() method grants access to all callers when main.enableAskQuestions is enabled, ignoring the records.allowQuestionsForGuests setting. Unauthenticated attackers can submit questions via the question/create API endpoint to bypass guest submission restrictions and inject spam into the admin moderation queue.
AnalysisAI
Authorization bypass in phpMyFAQ before 4.1.8 allows unauthenticated network attackers to submit questions through the question/create API endpoint regardless of guest-restriction settings. The root cause is an incomplete two-setting access control check: isAddingQuestionsAllowed() enforces only the main.enableAskQuestions feature flag while silently ignoring the records.allowQuestionsForGuests restriction, nullifying administrator intent. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that main.enableAskQuestions is set to true in the phpMyFAQ configuration - if this global flag is disabled, the question creation feature is inactive and the endpoint is unreachable. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3 with vector AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N reflects genuine nuance: the attack is network-accessible and requires no authentication (PR:N confirmed), but AC:H and AT:P acknowledge the dependency on a specific configuration state - specifically, enableAskQuestions must be true while allowQuestionsForGuests is false. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to phpMyFAQ 4.1.8 or later, which corrects the isAddingQuestionsAllowed() logic to evaluate both the main.enableAskQuestions and records.allowQuestionsForGuests settings before permitting access to the question/create endpoint. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
