DescriptionCVE.org

MOOS essential-moos through 10.0.1 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in pShare that accepts UDP datagrams from any source and republishes them with the attacker-claimed identity intact. Attackers can send crafted UDP datagrams to pShare input routes to inject messages into the local MOOS community under spoofed identities, or send malformed datagrams to crash the pShare process.

AnalysisAI

Unauthenticated UDP datagram injection in essential-moos pShare through 10.0.1 allows any network-reachable attacker to send crafted UDP packets that pShare republishes verbatim to the local MOOS community under an attacker-chosen identity, or to crash the pShare bridge process with malformed payloads. The root flaw is that pShare's Listener class used raw socket reads without capturing the sender's address, performing no source validation before deserializing and forwarding messages as authoritative MOOS community traffic. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation pShare must be deployed with at least one input route configured, which is its standard operational mode for inter-community bridging. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H) is technically well-grounded: UDP datagram injection requires no credentials, no session establishment, and no user interaction - any host with network access to the pShare port can exploit this. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply upstream commit 53729b6325a991a8dbd84dcd04e4707f3e592fd6, available via PR #18 at https://github.com/themoos/essential-moos/pull/18. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, identify all pShare instances version 10.0.1 and earlier, assess network exposure especially to untrusted networks, and apply network segmentation restricting UDP access if systems are mission-critical. …
