Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already be executing as a low-privileged process INSIDE the Avast/AVG/Norton sandbox on a Windows host, and requires the sandbox file-virtualization feature to virtualize a sensitive object (e.g. the SAM database). The concrete flaw: the driver opens the virtualization target with only GENERIC_WRITE and FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES (omitting WRITE_DAC), so applying the original DACL silently fails and leaves virtualized copies with permissive permissions; additionally IRP_MJ_CREATE does not strip WRITE_DAC for sensitive directories, letting the sandboxed process rewrite the object's security descriptor. Limiting factors: local access only (no remote vector), attacker must first obtain execution within the sandbox, and the target product must be installed and using sandbox virtualization - but no user interaction or elevated privileges are needed beyond initial sandboxed code execution, and a public PoC exists.

Impact

This is a genuine, high-priority local privilege escalation, not a paper high-CVSS. The CVSS 8.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) is well-calibrated: AV:L correctly reflects that the attacker must already be executing inside the Avast/AVG/Norton sandbox, PR:L reflects a low-privileged sandboxed process, and S:C captures the sandbox-to-host escape ending in SYSTEM code execution. Publicly available exploit code exists (GitHub MSNightmare/PrettyPrague plus an associated X/Twitter post), which materially raises real-world risk versus a theory-only bug. It is NOT in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of active mass exploitation - but for a local EoP with a working PoC against consumer antivirus, EPSS/KEV are weak signals anyway (local EoP rarely drives high EPSS or KEV listing). No SSVC decision data was supplied. Signals are consistent, not conflicting: high technical impact (full SYSTEM, SAM/NTLM disclosure), local vector, public PoC, vendor patch available. The main limiter is that the attacker must first land code inside the sandbox, making this a post-compromise escalation / defense-defeating primitive rather than an initial-access vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged process running inside the Avast/AVG/Norton sandbox (e.g. suspect malware detonated by the AV, or attacker code deliberately run under sandboxing) abuses the driver's failure to preserve DACLs: because virtualized copies inherit permissive permissions and WRITE_DAC is not stripped, the process rewrites the security descriptor of a virtualized object, reads the virtualized copy of the SAM database, and extracts local NTLM hashes to execute code as SYSTEM. Publicly available exploit code (GitHub MSNightmare/PrettyPrague) demonstrates the chain, lowering the skill barrier. Because AV:L/AC:L, the attack is reliable once code executes inside the sandbox.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026

Sandbox escape in the Avast/AVG/Norton sandbox minifilter driver (aswSnx.sys) on Windows allows an authenticated, low-privileged process already executing inside the sandbox to break file isolation and escalate to SYSTEM (CVSS 8.8, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, CWE-281). The driver opens the virtualization target with only GENERIC_WRITE and FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES, omitting WRITE_DAC, so every attempt to reapply the original DACL fails silently and virtualized copies of sensitive files are left with permissive permissions; the IRP_MJ_CREATE handler additionally fails to strip WRITE_DAC for sensitive directories, letting a sandboxed process rewrite the security descriptor of a virtualized object, read the virtualized SAM copy, extract local NTLM hashes and run code as SYSTEM. Publicly available exploit code exists (the PrettyPrague proof of concept), the vendor has released patches for the affected Avast, AVG and Norton products, and no CISA KEV entry indicates confirmed active exploitation.

RemediationAI

Primary fix: install the current vendor build for the affected Gen Digital product - Avast updates are distributed via https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Update-Antivirus, AVG via https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlname=Update-AVG-Antivirus, and Norton via https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v20240108175512167, with consolidated advisory information at https://www.gendigital.com/us/en/contact-us/security-advisories/ (patch status: patch available per vendor advisory; no exact fixed build number is published in the reference data, so verify the installed aswSnx.sys version against the vendor's support pages rather than assuming a specific release). Because exploitation requires the attacker to already be running code inside the sandbox, the highest-value compensating control is to stop executing untrusted or unverified binaries inside the sandbox and to treat sandboxed execution as untrusted - the trade-off is reduced containment for malware triage or testing workflows that rely on the sandbox. Where the sandbox file-virtualization feature is not operationally required, disabling the sandbox/virtualization component removes the attack surface entirely, at the cost of losing the sandbox's behavioral containment. Additional practical measures: monitor for unexpected WRITE_DAC or descriptor-modification activity against virtualized copies of sensitive paths such as the SAM store, restrict who can run unvetted code on Windows endpoints that also host these security agents, and prioritize patching on multi-user or kiosk hosts where a low-privileged local foothold is realistic. Rotating local account credentials, and treating local NTLM hashes as compromised on any host where a virtualization target was touched, limits the impact of any prior successful exploitation; note that these are mitigations, not substitutes for the vendor update.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected component is aswSnx.sys, a Windows minifilter driver that implements the file-virtualization layer behind the Avast, AVG and Norton sandboxes (Gen Digital). When a sandboxed process touches a protected path, the driver redirects the operation to a virtualized copy and is supposed to clone the original object's security descriptor onto that copy so the sandboxed view preserves the host's access semantics. Root cause class CWE-281 (Improper Preservation of Permissions): the driver created the virtualization target requesting only GENERIC_WRITE and FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES, which does not include WRITE_DAC, so the subsequent attempt to write the original DACL failed; the error was discarded rather than surfaced or retried, leaving virtualized copies of sensitive files - notably the SAM database - with the permissive descriptor of the newly created object. Compounding this, the IRP_MJ_CREATE callback did not strip WRITE_DAC from requests targeting sensitive directories, so a process inside the sandbox could overwrite the security descriptor of the virtualized object and then read it, harvesting local NTLM password hashes for offline cracking or pass-the-hash and ultimately achieving SYSTEM execution. The driver's operation registration table also lacks an IRP_MJ_SET_SECURITY callback, which the analysis treats as a defense-in-depth gap rather than the control that blocks the attack. The CPE data shows the same driver shipping across the entire Gen Digital consumer and business security portfolio, so a single driver fix covers Avast, AVG and Norton builds.

DescriptionCVE.org

Improper preservation of permissions in the Avast sandbox minifilter driver (aswSnx.sys) on Windows allows a local, low-privileged attacker executing inside the sandbox to escape file isolation and escalate to SYSTEM.

When the sandbox virtualizes a file it copies the original security descriptor, but the driver opened the virtualization target object with GENERIC_WRITE and FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES only, omitting WRITE_DAC. Every attempt to apply the original DACL therefore failed, and the failure was discarded silently, leaving virtualized copies of sensitive files with permissive permissions. Because the IRP_MJ_CREATE callback additionally did not strip WRITE_DAC for sensitive directories, a sandboxed process could rewrite the security descriptor of a virtualized object, read the virtualized copy of the SAM database, extract local NTLM password hashes and execute code as SYSTEM.

The absence of an IRP_MJ_SET_SECURITY callback in the driver's operation registration table is a related defense-in-depth gap, but it is not the control that prevents this attack.

Why It Matters

Publicly available exploit code exists for CVE-2026-82964, a high-severity sandbox escape in Avast, AVG, and Norton endpoint security products on Windows. An authenticated, low-privileged attacker already inside the sandbox can use this code to gain SYSTEM-level control, potentially compromising credentials and enabling lateral movement. Leadership should prioritize patching because these widely deployed products are meant to contain threats, and a successful exploit undermines that containment.
